We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today, let's learn some English vocabulary from English Plus lessons.
At English Plus, we are currently offering weekly English conversation and TOEIC test preparation lessons for adults.
In the English conversation lessons in particular, different topics come up each time in the conversation among the students.
The topics of conversation are very varied, such as weekend topics, recent news, current trends, hobbies, travel, and so on.
One such topic that comes up frequently is “food."
There are many topics about food, and today, we would like to learn English about “kinds of nuts,” which came up in a recent English conversation lesson.
Now, let's check out the following English words.

1. ピーカン = pecan
2. クリ = chestnut
3. ピーナッツ = peanut
4. ピスタチオ = pistachio
5. ココナッツ = coconut

After reviewing the English words above, read aloud the following sentences so that you can actually use them.
"I like (chestnuts) the best."

Today, let's practice English from English Plus' lessons.
At English Plus, we encourage our students to try to speak English a lot especially during lessons.
Once in a while, they make some mistakes, but they really try hard and try to express what they want to say in their own words. (Great Job!)
Through the lessons at English Plus, I realized there are some mistakes our students often make, so today let's review not to make the same mistake again.
Now, let's find errors from our lessons during the first week of this October below.

1. We told big peanuts during the last lesson.
2. One of my favorite shop is near Tokyo Dome.
3. I was studied English here last Tuesday.
4. Did he absent from class yesterday?
5. There was a silent.
6. The approach was not effect.

Let's improve English skills little by little!

Good morning and I really appreciate your visit to English Plus blog!
Today, I'd like to recommend a good English book for English learners from English Plus Cafe.
There are several good English books, magazines, and newspapers I'd like to recommend at English Plus Cafe.
Reading a whole book might take some time; however, I recommend reading a book little by little when you have time, such as break time or lunch time in order to improve English skills.
For this month, a book I'd like to recommend is "Happiness is a Sad Song" by Charles M. Schulz.
In this book, you can see some Peanuts characters and they might help us appreciate the little things in life.
This is a very easy-to-read book, so I recommend it to beginner learners too.
The point of reading English books is just keep reading even if you come across some unknown vocabulary.
Just try to guess the meaning of the vocabulary from its context and don't stop reading!
At English Plus, you can read English books little by little.
Reading English books regularly means improving your English skills regularly!
This habit is very important to improve English skills.
Let's try to read English books!

Today, I’d like to share my personal story about a mistake I made at a coffee shop.
I sometimes share this “embarrassing personal” story with my students as an episode to tell them that making mistakes is an important step to learn English.
This experience happened a couple months after I arrived in Toronto for the first time in 2004.
One afternoon after school, I was a bit hungry, so I stopped by Tim Hortons in Toronto, Canada.
In fact, it was Friday afternoon, so I decided that I would buy 12 donuts since it's much cheaper to buy 12, and I thought I could keep some for breakfast for the following weekend.
So, I went to the counter and asked a clerk, “I’ll have a medium double-double, and dars donuts.”
However, the clerk seemed not to understand what I just said, so I said the same thing again.
But still, he didn't understand, so I said again “a medium double-double, and dars donuts.”
Then, he asked me back “a medium double-double, and what???”
So, I said a little loudly, “dars donuts.”
But, his face said “???”
So, again, I said clearly “a dars donuts please”.
And, finally he got what I meant and he said, “Oh, a dozen!!”
I thought “…what? a dozen??”
I just misunderstood for a long time that 12 is a dars...NOT a dozen…I guess it’s because there is a famous Japanese chocolate bar called “Dars.”
Anyway, what I learned from that experience is “making mistakes is important!”
Since I made the embarrassing mistake, I’ve never made the same “dozen” mistake again.
We can always learn something from our mistakes!!

本日は“英語講師の英語に関する恥に関するエピソード　- 間違えることで英語力は向上する”です。

時々、レッスン時に“英語で間違えでも良い”という意味で自分の英語の失敗談を話すことがあります。

今日の“英語講師の英語に関する恥に関するエピソード　- 間違えることで英語力は向上する”はトロント・カナダで留学し始めた数カ月後（２００４年）の恥ずかしい思い出です。

ある日の語学学校での授業が終わった午後、ちょうどお腹が空いてきたので、Tim Hortonsに寄ることにしました。

その日は偶然にも金曜日で、週末は学校は休みだったので、週末の軽食にもなると思い１２個ドーナツを買うことにしました。
（Tim Hortonsではドーナツを１２個いっぺんに購入したほうが断然安い！）

決めたら注文あるのみで、早速カウンターへ行き店員さんに言いました。
“I’ll have a medium double-double and dars donuts please.”
（コーヒーをダブルダブルで１つとドーナツ１２個ください）

が、店員さんは自分が言ったことが聞きとれなかったのか、わからないというような表情をしたので、もう一度同じことを言ってみました。

が、しかし、またもや上手く通じなかったため、同じことをもう二回言ってみました。

そうすると店員さんは”a medium double-double and what?”（ダブルダブルと何？）と聞き返してきたため、今度は少し大きな声で”dars donuts”と言いました。

が、彼の表情はもっと冴えなくなりました・・・
（彼の頭の上にはっきりと？マークが見えましたような気がしました）

なのでもう一度、もっとはっきりと”dars donuts please”と言ったところ、店員さんがピンときたようで、

“Oh, a dozen!”と返信してきました。

今度は自分の頭の中で“what?? dozen???”という疑問が湧きました。

それまで自分の英語の知識では12=dars（ダース）だと勝手に思い込んでいたため、その時初めて12=dozen、１２はdozen（ダズン）と言うことを知った瞬間でした。
（余談ですが、日本のチョコレートの商品名“Dars=ダース”が本当の英語だと思い込んでいた間違いでした）

とにかくこの恥ずかしい経験から学んだことは“間違えて恥をかくことは大事”ということです。

この恥ずかしい経験をして以来、dose / dozenの間違いはなくなりました。

間違いは恥ずかしいですが、いろいろな間違いを通して英語でも新しいことを学んでいきましょう！

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

昨日はいつもお世話になっております"Figaro H-14原宿・ダーツカフェ"にてレッスンを行ってきました。

今回のレッスン内容は“質問文の作り方”
単純ですが、意外に“自分の聞きたい質問文を作る”ことは思ったよりも難しいものです。

それでも自分の生徒さんたちはレッスン内（９０分）で試行錯誤しながらも、しっかりとした意味がしっかり通る質問文を作っておりました。また、質問に対する答えも自分の言葉でしっかりと答えていました。

自分の生徒さんたちが進歩しているのを見ることは、やはり英語講師として嬉しいと同時に“教えていてやっていてよかったなぁ”と素直に思える瞬間です。

さらに生徒の方々には歩みを止めることなく、進歩していってもらいたいと思います！！
（もちろん、進歩のためのサポートは惜しみません！！一緒にがんばりましょう！！）


さて、いつもお世話になっている"Figaro H-14原宿・ダーツカフェ"ではレッスン後、食事をとることも可能です。

おすすめはいろいろあるのですが、自分のおすすめは中でも“Figaro特製タコライス！！”

特徴として、ソースがサルサ・シーザー・ナッツの３種類から選ぶことができます。

昨日のチョイスはサルサ＆ナッツ！！

少しのナッツの甘さとピリッとしたトマトがマッチした一品です！！

おいしくいただきました、ごちそうさまでした。
次回は写真を撮ってきます。

いつもお世話になっているFigaro H-14原宿のスタッフの方々、ならびにいつも自分のレッスンを受講してくれている生徒の方々にはとても感謝しています。

Good morning, everyone.
I had a private English lesson at Figaro H-14 in Harajuku yesterday.
The content of the lesson was about "How to form Question sentences"
It seems easy, but it's pretty difficult if you want to make questions which you really mean to ask.
However, my students were trying their best to make questions and answer properly in the lesson.
When I find my students are improving their English skills, I'm honestly glad that I'm an English teacher.
I hope all of my students try to improve their English skills even little by little!!
(Of course, I'll try my best to support each and every one of you!!)
By the way, at Figaro H-14 in Harajuku, it's possible to have a meal after lesson.
It's difficult to say, but I recommend their "Taco rice".
You can choose from 3 sources - Salsa, Nuts, Caesar.
I tried 2 sources - Salsa & Nuts yesterday, which was really tasty!!
I'd like to say "thank you" to staff members at Figaro and also my students who always help me a lot!!
I'll always be positive and take a step forward!!
