Today, I'm going to pick up a topic about some gender neutral words and the other relevant terms.
In my English lesson, I sometimes hear my students say not gender nertral terms, such as policeman, businessman, and so on.
So, in my lesson, I teach them some gender nertral words and the other relavant words.
For example, if we talk about occupations, we should say...
・chairman→chairperson
・businessman→businessperson
・salesman→salesperson
・stewardess→flight attendant
・waitress/waiter→server
・housewife→homemaker
Also, we should say these words correctly too...
・old→elderly
・Blacks→African-Americans/Canadians
・Whites→Caucasians
・Indians→Native Americans/Canadians
・Orientals→Asians

本日は“差別のない英語を使うことのすすめ”です。

英語講師としてレッスンを行っている中で、生徒の方が“現代において、差別用語として捉えられている英語 - 例：policeman, businessmanなど”を使っていることを耳にすることがあります。

そんな時、自分のレッスンでは“差別のない英語”を使うように教えています。

例えば、職業に関して言えば・・・

・chairman（議長）→chairperson
・businessman（実業家）→businessperson
・salesman（営業）→sales representative
・stewardess（客室乗務員）→flight attendant
・waiter/waitress（ウェイター/ウェイトレス）→server
・housewife（主婦）→homemaker

また、差別に関連する英語に関しては・・・

・old（年をとっている）→elderly
・Blacks（黒人）→African-Americans/Canadians
・Whites（白人）→Caucasians
・Indians（先住民族）→Native Americans/Canadians

言葉を正しく選んで、英語を楽しみましょう！

Yesterday, after I taught a couple of lessons, I went to Yurigaoka in order to participate in a “Kawasaki kigyokazyuku's New Year Party.”

That party was for those who attended the business seminar in Kawasaki held in 2010 & 2009.
It was held in “Tamari” whose owner attended the Kawasaki’s business seminar last year.
At Tamari, I had a really good time because the food & drink were excellent and the stories I had with everyone were very informative!!
Even some of the stories reminded me of Toronto and my ex-company though.

昨日はカフェでのレッスンの後、小田急線百合丘駅で開かれた“川崎起業家塾の新年会”に参加してきました。

“たまり”では、とてもおいしいお料理＋お酒を楽しむと同時に、いろいろと役に立つ話を聞くことができ、参加できて良かったです。

いろいろなお話を聞くことができ、より一層良い意味で起業に対するモチベーションが上がったので、一歩ずつ確実に英語学校設立へ向け前進していきます！！

Yesterday, I went to Kawasaki to have the second stage "interview" and told four business counsultans and several city hall staff members about my business plan.
The interview consisted of "5-minute presentation & 10-minute question/answer" sections.
I got nervous a little bit during my presentation, but thanks to Mr. Takeuchi, who happened to be one of the business counsultans attending my interview and his existence made me feel at ease!!
The interview was not perfect, but I thought I was (at least) able to tell them how much I want to start my business!!
Anyway, what I can do is just wait to hear the result on Feburary 28th!!
Hopefully, I can hear good news!!

昨日は、川崎市空き店舗活用・創業支援事業補助金の二次審査の面接へ行ってきました。

面接は、４人の中小企業診断士などビジネスコンサルタントの方々＋数名の川崎市役所のスタッフの前で、“５分間のプレゼンテーションと１０分間の質疑応答”という形で行われました。

プレゼンテーションでは少し緊張しましたが、いつもお世話になっている方々のお陰で（特に中小企業診断士の竹内幸次先生が、偶然に面接官の１人だったこともあり）いくらか緊張がほぐれました。

面接での受け答えは、まだまだ学ぶところが多く、“完璧”という表現からは程遠いものでしたが、少なくとも自分の英語学校起業に対する“気持ち”は伝わったかな、と思います。

結果は２月２８日発表とのことですので、気長に待ちながら、それまでは出来る限りの起業の準備をしていきたいと思います！！

This past Monday, I received a letter about the result of it.
It says "my business plan passed the first stage" and "I need to attend the next stage on Feb 15th", which made me very happy honestly!!
The next stage is a presentation and interview about my business plan.
According to the information, I have 5 minutes to explain my business plan, and soon after my presentation, there seems like a ten-minute interview.
So, this week whenever I have time, I need to prepare for it!!
I'll just do the best I can!!

本日は“英語学校のための空き店舗補助金の申し込み - １次審査結果”です。

先週、川崎まで“平成２３年度川崎市空き店舗活用・創業支援事業補助金”の応募用紙を提出しに行ってきました。

その１次審査の結果が記されている手紙が、今週月曜日に手元に届きました。

内容は“１次審査の通過”と“２月１５日に行われる予定の２次審査に関して”で、手紙を読んだ瞬間、正直なところ嬉しかったです。

来週、川崎で行われる２次審査は“プレゼンテーション”と“質疑応答”で、５分間のプレゼンに引き続き、１０分間の質疑応答が行われると手紙にありました。

今週中、自由になる時間を見つけた時は、しっかりと準備時間に充てたいと思います！！

New Year's eve!!
I know you are busy but thank you for taking some time to check out this blog!!
Since today’s New Year’s eve, in other words the end of the year, I’d like to write about TOP 5 events in 2010.
I’m not sure if you know about Billboard Top 40 countdown, but if you know that, you can enjoy this blog more with your imaginary background music, anyway…No. 1 - No.5 in 2010!!
No. 5: I got TOEIC 970 in July, and this is 10 points up compared with the last year’s result. Next year, I’ll try to achieve the perfect score, 990!!
No. 4: I started teaching elementary school student and currently I’m working on a curriculum for elementary school student.
No.3: Some students’ TOEIC scores went up by 140, 110!!
No. 2: I started this blog and twitter, and thank you for all who check this blog!!
No.1: My goal to establish my English school in 2011 is clear after attending 2 business seminars, and I met a lot of wonderful people!!
I can’t predict what is going to happen to me in 2011; however, I’ll make efforts to do my best to make my dream come true in 2011!!

２０１０年の大晦日です。

本日は“2010年を振り返って英語講師としてのTOP ５ カウントダウン”です。

アメリカにBillboard Top 40 countdownというテレビ番組がありますが、ご存じの方は、Billboard Top 40のBGMを想像しながらこのブログを読んでいただけるとさらに楽しめると思います。

Anyway, 英語講師として２０１０年を振り返ってのTOP5カウントダウンです。

No.5: ７月に受験したTOEICで前年同時期に受験したスコアより１０点高い９７０点を取得したこと。（来年は９９０点目指します！！）

No.4: 小学生を教えるようになったこと。現在、来年の英語学校設立のための“小学生用カリキュラム”を作成中

No.3: TOEIC受講中の生徒の方のスコアが劇的にアップ！！（１４０点アップや１１０点アップ！！）

No.2: ブログとツイッターを始めたこと。Thank you for all who check this blog!!

No.1: 川崎での２つのビジネスセミナーの受講を通し、ユニークでオンリーワン＋No.1の英語学校設立のプランが明確になってきたこと。また、セミナーなどを通していろいろなたくさんの方と知り合えたこと

月並みな言葉になってしまいますが、ブログを読んでくださっている皆様、現在レッスンを受講していただいている一人ひとりの生徒の皆様、セミナーを通して知り合った皆様、川崎市のセミナー開催に関わっているスタッフの皆様、中小企業診断士の竹内先生、友人・家族、一人ひとりに、とても感謝しております。

Yesterday, I went to Kawasaki to get Mr. Koji Takeuchi, who was a lecturer of Kawasaki business seminar I attended from this Sep to Nov, to take a consultation with my English school's business plan.
I really appreciate to Mr. Takeuchi and Mr. Nagashima for this opportunity.

The main subject I asked him about was about how to make my English school business successful!
He gave me some advice, for instance…
- I should make my homepage right now!
- I ought to keep looking for the best place!
- I need to think about how to advertise my lessons & products!
and so on…
I’ve learned a lot and I realized that I still have a lot of things to do!!
First, I will make my homepage and put it on the web, and when I make it, I will let everyone know about it on this blog!

昨日は川崎市産業振興会館において、川崎起業家塾でもお世話になりました 竹内幸次先生、ならびに財団の長島さんに“英語学校起業に関するコンサルティング”をしていただきました。

いろいろなお話をいただきましたが、主なポイントとしましては“いかに英語学校を成功させるか”ということでした。

お話の中で、今から準備しておく事柄（例えば、ホームページの準備・英語学校設立のベストの場所の選定・広告の仕方など）を聞くことができました。

たくさんのことを聞き、学んだので、今後はしっかり行動に移していきたいと思います。

まずは英語学校のホームページ作成からです！！
少しずつでも、でき上がり次第、このブログでお知らせしていきたいと思いますので、ホームページのチェックのほうもよろしくお願いいたします。

The other day, I had a chance to visit some shops and retailers in Sagamihara-city to listen to their business experiences.
First, I visited a coffee bean shop "Emilu" which Mr. Koji Takeuchi, who is a lecturer at the seminar I attended in Kawasaki, recommended.
The coffee bean shop's manager, Mr. Yoshida, was a really nice person and he took the trouble to take some time and teach me how to make good coffee, how to choose good coffee beans, and other useful tips about business.
I felt it was really worth going there and talking with him; moreover, after I told him about my English school plan, he introduced his friend’s café, which has experienced having English conversation lessons in the café.
I was able to get some useful information there too thanks to Mr. Suzuki, who is an owner of the café "Yokoyamadai Coffee Kan".
Overall, they gave me a lot of positive energy!!
From now, I’ll do what I need to do simply to make my English successful!!

先日、相模原市の何件かのお店に行き、いろいろなお話を伺う機会がありました。

最初に、（川崎市で受講しておりました起業セミナーの講師である中小企業診断士の）竹内幸次先生が紹介してくださいました、“絵美衣留（えみいる）”さんと言うコーヒーの生豆を扱っているお店をお伺いしました。

店主の吉田さんはとても笑顔が素敵で、とても気さくな良い方でした。
吉田さんは、コーヒーのおいしい淹れ方、コーヒー豆の選び方、ビジネスについてのアドバイスなども教えてくれました。

また、吉田さんと話している時、私の英語学校のビジネスプランを話す機会があり、英会話カフェとしてビジネスをしていたこともある、吉田さんの友人を紹介してくださりました。

紹介いただきました“横山台珈琲館”では以前、英語のレッスンをカフェをしていた貴重なお話をマスターの鈴木さんから聞くことができました。

いろいろな方の経験と話をしっかりと参考にしながら、本日も“ユニークでオンリーワン＋No.1の英語学校”の設立を目指して前向きに前進です！！

Hi, good morning, and thank you for checking out my blog!!
At this time of a year in Japan, one Chinese character that represents the year is announced.
This years's Chinese character was "暑" that means "hot".
(FYI: Last year's one was "新" that means "new")


Now it's winter, and I tend to forget how hot this summer was, however, when I saw this Chinese character "暑", it just reminded me the hot summer!!
Anyway, today, I'd like to choose an English vocabulary word that represents my 2010!!
The word I'd like to choose for myself is...

"challenge"

It's because...
"I started this blog."
"It was my first time to attend some business seminars and I was able to learn something very important to launch my own English school."
"I started to teach elementary school student", and so on.
I personally think "challenge" really represents my 2010 as an English vocabulary word, and I'm glad to choose it.
What vocabulary word would you personally choose?

本日は“あなたの今年１年を英単語１つで表すと？”です。

この時期になりますと、日本では“今年の漢字”が発表されます。

今年の漢字は“暑”でした。（ちなみに昨年の漢字は“新”でした）
とても暑い夏だったことや、暑い出来事がたくさんありましたので、今年の漢字“暑”には納得です。

“漢字一字”で今年を表すことができるなら、“英単語一つ”で表すことも可能と考え、英語講師として自分の２０１０年を表す一字を選びました。

その英単語が "challenge" （挑戦）です。

理由はいろいろとありますが、主に・・・
“ブログを始めたこと”
“起業セミナーに参加し、英語学校起業に関していろいろと学べたこと”
“小学生を教え始めたこと”などです。

今年ほど "challenge" という英単語が、自分を表現する年は今までにありませんでしたので、いろいろなことに "challenge" ができたという点では、個人的にとても良い年だったと思います！！

Today, I'm going to introduce a greeting that you can use when you meet someone who you haven't seen for a long time.
Ok, now imagine the next situation.
You are attending a business convention in New York.
You just meet a American friend who you haven't talked for a long time.
What would you say?
It's okay to say...
"How are you doing?"
However, the following expressions must be better...
"How have you been?"
"Long time no see!"
When you meet someone you haven't met for a long time, try these ones!!

"How are you doing?"でもＯＫですが、上記の英語の部分にもっと良い例文がありますので、確認しておきましょう！！

How's it going?
Today, I have a plan that I'm walking & searching place for my English school in Kawasaki, and after that I'm goint to get a consultation with Mr. Koji Takeuchi about launching my English school.
Mr. Koji Takeuchi is the lecturer of the business seminar which I attended until last Saturday.
