“英会話中に単語がでてこない”方へ英語講師おすすめ解決法

本日は“英単語”に関するお悩みに対する英語講師のおすすめの解決法です。

会話・文法・TOEICなどレッスンの種類を問わず、レッスンをしていますと“会話の時や英文を書いている時に単語がでてこない”ということを耳にします。

これに対するおすすめの解決法としましては、まず“基礎となる単語をマスターすること（完全に覚える）”につきます。

この基礎となる単語、約３０００語は以前おすすめしました“Data Base 3000”（田中 茂範 著・桐原書店）がおすすめです。

確かにマスター（完全に覚える）するには時間と根気を要しますが、その時間・努力をした分の価値は絶対にあります。

気長に１年間でマスターする計画で毎日５分続けましょう！！

（自分も実行中の）“毎日続けるコツ”としてタイマーで“５分間集中”カウントダウンすることもおすすめです！！

Good morning!
During lesson, I sometimes hear some of my students say "um...what should I say...?" or after lesson, they say "my vocabulary is not enough for me to express myself."
There is a solution to this problem!
That is "to master very basic vocabulary."
It would be difficult to choose the basic vocabulary for you, so I recommend the book entitled "Data Base 3000 - written by Shigenori Tanaka / Kirihara Shoten" for everyone.

I know it'll be tough to master all of the vocabulary in the book because it will take a lot of time and your efforts.
However, I'm sure "Hard work will pay you off!!"
Don't think this way that you will master them in a couple of months, but you should think that you will master them in a year with 5 minute practice every day."
If you can't concentrate for 5 min, I recommend you use a timer to set 5 min!!

昨日は“川崎起業家塾”へ参加し、“時代トレンドに対応したビジネスモデルづくり”という題の元、トレンドに密着し成功した企業の例などを学びました。

個人的に昨日のセミナーを通し、“起業への決意を改めて確認する”と共に“今後の課題を浮き彫りにすること”もできました。

例えば・・・

・ニーズやマーケットに見合った価格設定の見直し
・トレンドにあった英語レッスンの時間帯の調整
・自分の英語学校を表現するキーワードの設定

などです。

今後は、“シンプル”かつ“着実”に課題を一つずつ確実にこなし、２０１１年４月の英語学校起業という目標に向かっていきます。

できることから一歩ずつです！！

Last night, I attended a business seminar in Kawasaki and learned about some successful companies whose business models match the current trend.
Personally, throught the seminar, I was able to make up my mind about my English school and also find some tasks I need to sort out.
For example, I need to recheck the tuition fee and time of English lessons, and I need set some keywords that describe my English school.
Now that I know some tasks, I will simply have to carry out one by one in order to make my dream come true in April 2011!!

英語学校起業への現実化に向けて

本日は“英語学校起業への現実化に向けて”です。

本日、９月８日から１１月６日まで毎週水曜日、英語学校の現実化への次なるステップとして“財団法人川崎市産業振興財団主催による川崎起業家塾”へ参加予定です。

前回の“商人デビュー塾”と同じく、中小企業診断士の竹内幸次先生による講義です。

時間を有意義に使っていろいろなことを学んできたいと思います！！

To my surprise, it's raining today.
Anyway, from today to Nov. 6th I'm attending a business seminar in Kawasaki as the next step to establish my own English school.
As well as another business seminar I attended until last month, the lecturer is Mr. Koji Takeuchi.

This seminar is composed of 10 seminars including visiting & checking shops in a shopping mall - Lazona Kawasaki.
I'm really looking forward to attending this seminar!!

カフェでの英語レッスンのひそかな楽しみ

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“カフェでの英語レッスンのひそかな楽しみ”についてです。

以前、大手の英会話学校で勤めていた時は教室内で立ち通しでレッスンをしていたのですが、
現在のカフェでのレッスンのスタイルですと、ドリンク（コーヒー）を片手にレッスンができるのでリラックスしてレッスンをすることができます。

また、カフェでの英語レッスンのひそかな楽しみとして、いろいろなドリンク（特にコーヒー）を試したり、飲み比べすることができます。

カナダでは知っていたのですが、最近、日本でも"decaf"（デカフェ：カフェイン抜きのコーヒー）があることをはじめて知りました。

早朝レッスンでは普通のカフェイン入りのコーヒーが胃にきついこともあるので、
最近はこのデカフェをレッスンのお供にしています。

また、Tully'sではお店にて自分で抽出できるので、なかなか面白い経験ができます。

英語での注文は："I'd like to have a decaf, please"（デカフをお願いします）

Good morning.
I used to teach English conversation at school with a style of standing in the front of the classroom.
Now, I teach English at a cafe, so I can relax and teach English with a cup of coffee.
The one things I like teacihng English at a cafe is that I have a chance to try various kinds of drink, especially coffee.
I knew the fact that there was decaf coffee in Canada, but I didn't know there was one in Japan until recently.
When I have an early morning lesson, regular coffee is sometimes too strong for my stomach.
So, recently, when I order coffee in the morning, I order this decaf.
At Tully's, when you order decaf, they serve you with coffee pot and coffee mug.
It's quite an interesting experience, so if you have a chance, try it with this phrase: "I'd like to have a decaf, please"

英語学習におすすめのヒューマンドラマ映画

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“英語学習におすすめの映画（ヒューマンドラマ）”を紹介したいと思います。

英語学習のみでなく、もし、人生に疲れた時の気分転換にもおすすめの一本がこちら：

"The Bucket List"（邦題：最高の人生の見つけ方）

ストーリーは見てのお楽しみとしまして、Jack NicholsonとMorgan Freemanのベテラン俳優の駆け引きが絶妙です！！

また、この映画のサウンドトラックに使われていますJohn Mayorの"Say"という曲もとてもこの映画にマッチしていると思います。


ちなみに洋画を見る時のおすすめの英語学習としましては・・・

基本的に、音声（英語）＋字幕（英語）がおすすめです。
（余裕があれば英語学習のため、リピーティング“音声を聞いた後すぐに字幕に出てくる英語を音読すること”も効果的です）

もし、内容がわからない場合は途中から、音声（英語）＋字幕（日本語）に切り替えてもOKです。

英語学習用として、また普段の映画鑑賞としても良い作品だと思いますので、お時間がある時にでも是非！！

本日の英語での一言："You won't regret it"

Good morning, how did you enjoy your weekend?
As for me, I had a good time teaching TOEIC and in the lesson, my student talked about a movie he watched.
I realized that I haven't watched any movies for a long time, so today I'd like to (at least) talk about a movie I recommend.
The title of the movie is "The Bucket List", which is a human drama.
It's good for English study and also good when you are tired and want to refresh your mind.
I wouldn't tell you the story here, but I'd say Jack Nicholson&Morgan Freeman's acting is excellent.
Also the music in the movie, especially John Mayor"s song-"Say" matches the movie I think.
By the way, when you watch English movies for English study, I recommend...
Sound - English
Subtitle - English
and Repeating* is also a good means of English study.
(*Repeating: soon after you listend to English, you read out loud what you've just heard with looking at the subtitle.)
If you are lost in the movie, you can change to

Subtitle - Japanese
The story of this movie is really good, so please check it out!

英語講師としてのやりがい

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

今日は東京都内にてTOEICのレッスンがあります。
ご受講いただきましてありがとうございます。

本日は“英語講師としてのやりがい”についてです。

英語講師として仕事を始め約５年、いろいろな生徒の方の反応や英語を学んだ成果を見てきました。

目標を達成することなど、英語講師としてのやりがいは本当にいろいろとあるのですが、
その中でも特にこの一言を聞けた時は特に“英語講師としてのやりがいを特に感じる”瞬間です。

それは・・・“寝ている時に英語で夢を見た”です。

生徒の方に言わせると、“レッスンを受講するようになり英語での夢を見ることがある”のだそうです。

なぜ英語で夢を見るのかはわかりませんが、英語講師として“寝ている時でさえ、頭の中で英語を使ってくれている”と思えることはとても嬉しいことです！！

余談ですが、自分も個人的に英語での夢を見ることがあります。
特にカナダで生活している時はほとんど毎日のように見ていました。

本日も新たな“英語講師としてのやりがい”が見つかるような、レッスンをしてきます！！

Hi, how are you enjoyoing this weekend?
I have a TOEIC lesson in Tokyo and thanks for taking it as always!!
Through English lessons for about 5 years, I have seen a lot of my students' happy moments as an English teacher, such as they've acheived their goal and son on.
Especially, when I hear the next phrase from my student, I feel extremely happy.
That is..."I saw a dream in English while I was sleeping."
According to them, since taking my English lessons, they sometimes see a dream in English at night.
I don't know why they see a dream in English, but I am happy because I can say that they use their English brain while asleep!
I also see a dream in English some time, particulary when I was in Canada, I saw a dream in English almost every day.
Anyway, I'll go find another happy moment in my English lesson!!

英語講師の留学経験（キューバ旅行 後編）

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“英語講師の留学経験（キューバ旅行 後編）”です。

２００８年９月にキューバを訪れる機会があり、“すごく優雅な１週間を過ごしました！！”
と、このブログに書けばきれいに終われるところなのですが、

現実はそう甘くありませんでした・・・

実は２００８年はキューバ・アメリカの大西洋においてハリケーンが多発した年で、

その中でも“大きいハリケーン２つ - Hurricane Hanna / Hurricane Ike”が見事に滞在中に到来してしまいました。
（アメリカではハリケーンに名前をつけるのが普通で、最近だと有名なものに"Hurricane Katrina - ハリケーンカトリーナ"があります）

ラッキーなのか、アンラッキーなのかハリケーン到来はこのツアーの５日目～最終日でした。

この最後の３日間は“缶詰のホテルの中で、したことと言えば・・・ハリケーンの影響で映りの悪いテレビを見、のどが渇いたらビールを頼みに行き、時間が来たらご飯、という
“体調の良い人がホテル入院をしている”ような３日間でした。

今となれば、キューバに行くという経験が出来、その上、本場のハリケーンも体験できるという貴重な思い出になりました。

I'd be glad if I could say "this trip was excellent and I spent a wonderful week in the resort in Cuba!!", but reality bit me...
I had a good time until the 4th day of my trip, but it suddently changed because of hurricanes.
In fact 2008 is the year Cuba and the Atlantic America experienced a lot of hurricanes, and two of them - Hurricane Hanna & Hurricane Ike landed during my stay in Sep, 2008.
I don't know if I can say it was lucky or unlucky for me, the Hurricanes came on the 5th and stayed until the last day of my trip.
For the last 3days, what I did was just "watching TV which got poor-reception because of the Hurricanes, drinking beer, and having meals when time comes."
It was like "a healty man staying in the hospital for 3 days."
However, this trip has become my great memory because I was able to visit Cuba and experience genuine Hurricane!!

学校英語教育に関して - 英語講師の視点から

今日は数件、東京都内にてレッスンがあります。
いつもご受講いただきありがとうございます！！

本日は“学校英語教育に関して（英語講師の視点から）”です。

最近、朝日新聞の中で“学校英語”に関して有識者の方々の意見が載っておりました。

一英語講師として思わず納得してしまう意見もありました。

例えば、中島和子さん（トロント大学名誉教授）の意見の要約：

“英語教育は幼児期～大学まで一貫したカリキュラムに基づいて行い、卒業後も学び続けられる場を作り、社会にでても大丈夫な英語力をつけることが大事”

や、千田潤一さん（TOEICの伝道師）の意見の要約：

“実際に使える英語とかけ離れた大学入試を作るのではなく、入試はTOEICなどの外部テストを使い、新入社員になった時のための英語力のアップを図る”

というものでした。

自分の英語能力のベースはあくまでも“自分が受けてきた公立学校の英語教育”で、決して間違えた教え方だとは思っておりませんが、実際に使えるかを考えたときの“実用性”に関しましては疑問符がつきます。

なので、自治体・国がしっかりとした“英語のできる・英語コミュニケーションのできる人材を育てる”というビジョンの基、しっかりとしたカリキュラムを作成すると同時に、英語を教える教育者も育てていくべきだと思ったのが、このコラムを読んで感じた一英語講師の感想です。

それでは今日の英語の一言："Set your goal and don't give up!"

How are you doing?
Today, I'd like to talk about English education at school in Japan as an English instructor.
Recently, I've read a series of columns about English education at school in Japan written by university professor, famous English instructor and so on in the Asahi Newspaper.
As I read some of their opinions on English education and I sometimes agreed to.
One opinion I agreed was by Ms. Kazuko Nakajima, who is a professor at Toronto Univ:
She says "It's important to teach English based on a consistent approach from kindergaten to university. Then, we should make a good environment for students to continue learning English, and they can be ready for the real world."
The other opinion is by Mr. Junichi Chida, who is a TOEIC expert:
He says "Universitiy entrance exam is far from pragmatic, so instead of using it, they should use TOEIC or some other practical tests because it'll be very beneficial for university students when they are ready for the real world."
Through my own experience, my basis of English is based on the standard English education (=translation method) in Japan and I wouldn't say that was wrong.
However, I wonder if there was a little more practical approach then.
Hopefully, the government makes a good curriculum for practical English with a vision "to make international people from Japan."
Also, this is the last but not the least, they educate English teachers more and more often and seriously.

英語講師おすすめの英単語学習本

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“英語講師としておすすめの英単語学習本”を紹介したいと思います。

現在の“私自身、英語講師としての英語の基礎”となっているその本とは・・・
Data Base 3000（田中 茂範 著・桐原書店）です。

この本はNintendo DSの“英語漬け”のベースになっている本なので皆様にお馴染みあるかもしれません。

この本では英語コミュニケーションに“絶対的な基礎となる語彙”の習得ができます。

個人的にカナダ留学前・留学中はこのData Base 3000を、帰国後の今も同じシリーズの Data Base 5500 を使って学習しています。

この本のおすすめの使い方としては右ページに書いてある“日本文を英訳（音読）する”ことです。
（一日一文を最初の目標にし、その後慣れてきたら一日一ページにすると良いでしょう）

また、CDを使っての発音の確認もできます。

さて、今日の英語での一言："Practice makes perfect"（継続は力なり！！）

I often go to bookstores to check some English books including for English study and for leisure time.
At times, I find good English books, but the book I recommend from now is one of the best books for English vocabulary.
The book's title is "Data Base 3000" (by Shigenori Tanaka / Kirihara Shoten)
Actually, this book is the base of Nintendo DS's software "Eigozuke", so some of you might know or hear of this title.
Why this book is good is that "you can master very basic vocabulary for English communication!"
As for me, I used this book before and while studying in Canada, and now I'm using the same series "Data Base 5500.
One of the best ways to use this book is to translate Japanese sentences into English on the right page!!
If you can, pleas try 1 page a day.
There is also a CD, so you can check pronunciation too.
Always "Practice makes perfect!!"

ウェブを通しての英語レッスンに関して英語講師の視点から

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“ウェブを通しての英語レッスンに関して英語講師の視点から”です。

以前、ウェブでのレッスンをご希望の生徒の方とウェブを通しての英会話のレッスンをする機会がありました。

まず、ウェブを通してのレッスンをしたメリットとしては・・・
・時間の融通が利くこと
・安い値段でできること
・手軽さ

デメリットとしましては・・・
・レッスン時間が比較的短く、レッスンのポイントのトレーニングが十分にできない
・生徒の方は同じ表現・英語を繰り返し使う傾向がある
・“レッスン”というよりは“英語”に触れるという感じになるので、しっかりと英語を学びたいという初心者の方には、正直厳しい

もちろん、レッスンの流れ・やり方もあるので一概に自分が感じたメリット・デメリットだけではないと思うのですが、
“初心者の方で英語を学びたいという方”には、“しっかりと相手と向かい合って話ができるレッスン、つまり相手の動作・声の抑揚・顔の表情が見えるレッスン”が重要だと英語講師の視点から感じました。

それでは本日の英語で一言："Set a goal and practice until you get there!"

Good morning.
Today, I'd like to express my personal opinion as an Egnlish teacher on "web lesson."
I have had a chance to teach English conversation to a student who wants to learn English through the web.
Personally, I thought there are some pros and cons.
The pros are...
・students can learn English at their free time
・lesons are cheaper than regular lessons
・basically, you don't need to prepare
The cons are...
・lesson time is short and it's not enough for students to practice teaching point
・students tend to learn the same expressions every time
・it's not appropriate for beginners because it's not for learning (=lesson), but just for speaking (=English conversation)
I know that these pros and cons are through my personal experience, so I'm sure there are other pros and cons.
However, as a conclusion, I recommend that beginner English learners should learn English through regular-class-room style lessons because the students can learn some other things such as actions or facial expressions!!
