dress my burns

今日は私の住んでいるマンションで防災訓練が行われ管理組合の理事長として何か挨拶をさせられる羽目になったので、最近の週末の日課（週課？）となった区民農園に青虫取りに行くのも夕方に変更です。　訓練開始のベルが鳴る前に急いでこのブログを書いているので手短に済ませます。　今日引用する文も "Ben and Me" からです。

"dress" を辞書で引きかけましたが "dress" に "apply a bandage or medication to" の意味がある事は７月に "dressing" の話題で書いた事を思い出しました。 思い出しただけでもましですが "dressed my burns" で直ぐに "apply a bandage or medication to burns" が出てこないと駄目ですね。

hogtie

The Japan Times Online Sept.29 の見出し記事に興味を引く単語がありました。

早速 "hogtie" を辞書(Dictionary.com)で見ます。
1. to tie (an animal) with all four feet together.
2. to hamper or thwart: Repeated delays hogtied the investigation.
1.の意味はＴＶの旅番組で何度か見た事のある東南アジア、南洋の島での豚の丸焼き料理を思い起こしますね。豚の丸焼きと言えば昨年の１月にスペイン旅行をした時にイベリコ豚の幼豚の丸焼き料理を食べた事があります。食べてから言うのも何ですが、魚の丸焼きと違って、豚の丸焼きは何となく気が引けるのは日本人だからでしょうね。話が脱線しましたが見出し記事の "hogtie" の意味は明らかに2.ですね。

draught

English Journalの１０月号が借りれるとのメールが図書館から来ましたがリーダーズダイジェストは相変わらず予約待ちなのでまた小学生むけの本を読むことにしました。今度は "Ben and Me" と題された本でかのBenjamin Franklinの伝記をネズミが書き残していたという設定の話です。　小学生向けとは言え私の知らない単語・慣用句は数ページも進まないうちにかならず一つや二つはあるのでこのブログの１～２週間分のネタは直ぐに出て来るでしょう。　では最初に気になった単語を紹介します。

"draught" には色々意味があり私も幾つかは知っていますが上の文での意味にはどれも当てはまらないので辞書を見ます。

次ぎの文は辞書からではなくDIYnotと言うサイトのDraught proofing windows and doorsの項からの抜粋です。

"candle" と "flicker" ときたら "draught" が原因だと言うのは決まり文句のようです。

a Japanese thing

一年ちょっと前に "a thing" を話題にしましたが、EJの単語テスト一日一問の９月２８日の問題は "It's a Japanese thing.の意味を問うものでした。 "a ～　thing" の用法は下記の説明例がALCに掲載されていました。
It's a Southern thing.（南部ではよくある話だ）
It's a very male thing.（まさに男性ならではの話だ）
It's a very California thing.（実にカリフォルニア的なことだ）
"a thing" とは意味が違いますね。

rap session

"Psychology Made Simple" に次ぎの文がありました。
Perhaps researcher host a rap session, where a variety of people sit around and talk about then the reseachers look for recorded, and then the researchers look for patterns in the responses.
"rap" の意味としては非難するとかコツンと軽く叩く、あるいは "rap music" を思い浮かべます。　引用文の "rap session" は初めて見る表現ですが、その後に "a variety of people sit around and talk about" とあるので意味は想像がつきます。
念のために一応辞書を引きます。

scaredy-cat

"RAT THEETH"　は小学生向けの小説なのでさすがに私でも４回の昼休みの時間で読み終わりました。　この小説からの引用はこれが最後となります。
Arther was a scaredy-cat.
この "RAT THEETH" には."Anthony" と "Carrot" と言う猫が登場するのですが、引用文の "Arther" は男の子であり猫ではありません。　従って、"scaredy-cat" には何か別の意味があるに違いません。　そこで辞書です。
Dictionary.com: (informal) One who is excessively fearful.
Wiktionary: A coward, used to describe someone who is easily frightened or who is high-strung and easily scared.
臆病者の事ですね。　"fraidy-cat" とも言うそうです。

mode

"Psychology Made Simple" を読んでいますが本論の心理学の前に統計についての記述がありました。
The three measures of central tendency are mean, median, and mode.
はるか昔の学生時代に少しは統計を勉強したような気もしますが今では日本語でも統計と言われても平均値とか偏差値くらいの言葉しか思い浮かべません。　"Psychology Made Simple"は初学者の為の入門書なので基本の説明が次ぎのように続きます。
In statistics the average is also called the mean.
The second measure is the median, or simply put, the middle number in an array of number.
The final measure of central tendency is the mode. This is the number that appears most often.
なるほど、この "mode" は統計以外にも別の色々な意味があるので要注意というか、統計の話の場合は最頻度、最多値の意味があることを憶えておきましょう。

hog

"RAT THEETH" の主人公は小学生ですがその小学生の会話にも私が知らない単語・表現が幾つもあります。　学校をさぼってデパートの家電売り場にいった主人公 Cliffeの次ぎの台詞を見てください。
Someone was sitting on the floor in front of the biggest TV set. A boy.
"Move over a little," Cliffe said.
The boy didn't move.
"Hey, " Cliffe tried again. "You're hogging up the whole television set."
たしか "hog" には豚の意味があったと思いますが、述語で　"hogging up" となると何でしょうか？　ガツガツ食べる意味なら想像できますが、このcontextではそのような意味にはならないし、やはり辞書を引くしかないですね。

上の３番目の辞書の例文とCliffeの言っている意味はほとんど同じ様です。　また、この表現はinformalとの注がありますので書き言葉あるいは上品な（？）表現としては２番目の辞書の説明で使われている "appropriate" が適当なのでしょうね。

busybody

"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" を読み終えましたが相変わらずリーダーズダイジェストは予約の順番待ちなのでまたしても子供の小説を読みます。今度読み始めた "RAT THEETH" by Patricia Reily Giff はどうも小学４年生位の話のようで "DADDY-LONG-LEGS" と比べて単語を引く頻度が４分の１程度になり、ブログのネタになるような表現・単語も少なそうですがそれでも興味の湧く単語はすぐにありました。

"busybody" はまさか「忙しい身体」ではないでしょう。　辞書を引きます。　OneLook Quick Definitionsの説明です。
"a person who meddles in the affairs of others"
おせっかいな人ですね。　たしかにやたらにおせっかいな人は忙しいに違いない。

pantheism

"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" からの最後の引用です。

"pantheism" を辞書、OneLook Quick Definitionsで引くと：

"pan" はたしか元はギリシャ語で "all" を意味していて、接頭語として色々な言葉になっていますね。　例： pan-african: of or pertaining to all African nations or peoples.
上の "pantheism" の説明で連想するのは "animism" で、こちらを辞書で見ると "the doctrine that all natural objects and the universe itself have souls"　とあります。 例文： "Animism is common among primitive peoples"
私にはどちらも結局同じような考えに思え違いが分かりません。
"DADDY-LONG-LEGS" の結末はめでたしめでたしで、やはり名作のひとつだと思います。　普通の小説と異なり登場人物の関係も分かり易く、毎日話しは一応完結するので非常に読みやすい。　大人の小説を読む前の準備には手頃な小説と思います。
