pound lock

先日カナダ大使館で皇太子殿下による "Water Transportation in Edo" と題した講演を聴く機会がありました。若い頃から特別な教育、訓練を受け、Oxford大学への留学経験、外国の要人との面談等、経験豊富なだけあってさすがに英語の発音もきれいで、非常に聴き易いスピーチでした。　その日のレクチャーで知った英単語を紹介します。　それは "pound lock" と言うもので、恐らく普通の日本人は知らない英語表現と思いますが、レクチャーでは映像も使用されており "pound lock" が何かと言う疑問にはならず、あれを英語で "pound lock" と言うのかと感心したのですが、考えて見れば、 "pound lock" が何か分かった後でも、それを日本語で何と言うのか知りません。　家に帰って辞書で "pound lock" を探しましたが、OneLook検索で引っかかったのはWikipediaだけでした。　ではWikipediaの説明を引用します。
A pound lock is type of lock that is used almost exclusively nowadays on canals and rivers. A pound lock has a chamber (the pound) with gates at both ends that control the level of water in the pound. In contrast, an earlier design with a single gate was known as a flash lock.
この説明にある "lock" は普通使っている錠やロックの意味とは違います。
"lock" の説明もまずWikipediaで見てみます。
A lock is a device for raising and lowering boats between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The distinguishing feature of a lock is a fixed chamber whose water level can be varied; whereas in a caisson lock, a boat lift, or on a canal inclined plane, it is the chamber itself (usually then called a caisson) that rises and falls.
"pound lock" では辞書に載っていないと言いましたが "lock" だと次ぎのような説明がありました。

一方 "pound" を見ると次ぎの説明があります。

"pound" も"lock" もいずれもenclosureの意味があるのですね。結局 "pound lock" は海面（水面）の高さが異なる水域をつなぐ運河のゲートのシステムと覚えておけば一般人には用が足りますが、この方面に詳しい方なら日本語にも "pound" に対応する特別な言葉があるのを知っているのでしょうね。
