polymath

昨年末にNHKのBS１で '「衝撃の書」が語る人類の未来〜サピエンス全史/ホモ・デウス' というドキュメンタリーを見て、番組の基になった著者Yuval Noah Harariの本 'サピエンス全史' あるいは 'ホモ・デウス' を読みたいと思い、早速地元の図書館で調べるとYuval Noah Harari著の本が3冊あることが分かりました。とりあえず 'Homo Deus' を予約しました。図書館から連絡があったので受け取りに行きましたが、本を受け取って本の大きさに衝撃を受けました。ページ数は4百ページ代なのですが、大きさが文庫本の2倍以上あり、持ち歩くには重くて大きく、ジム用の靴や着替えで既に満杯に近い私のバックパックには入らず、厄介な本です。(つい最近とりあげたまさに　"tome" ですね。踏み台として使える大きく厚みのある本です。)
　
この本から取り上げる最初の単語は "polymath" で次の様に出てきました。

An increasing minority of scientists and thinkers consequently speak more open these days, and state that the flagship enterprise of modern science is to defeat death and grant humans eternal youth. Notable examples are the gerontologist Aubrey de Grey and the polymath and inventor Ray Kurzwell (winner of the 1999 US National Medal of Technology and Innovation).

"poly" と "math" の意味からすると "polymath" は数学の一種のように思えますが、それでは変です。辞書を見ます。
・Oxford English Dictionary: A person of wide-ranging knowledge or learning.: a Renaissance polymath

・Collins Dictionary: a person of great and varied learning: A modest man and a true polymath.

・Cambridge English Dictionary: a person who knows a lot about many different subjects: It included few professional astronomers but many physicians, men of letters, diplomats, students, polymaths, and variously educated gentlemen.
なるほど、色々な分野について知っている博学な人を指しているのですね。
