昨年のReader's Digest 10月号にあったジョークです。.
With Bible in hand, I read to my high school religion class, "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife."
"OK," I said, "from this Scripture, what do we learn is important in marriage?"
A student blurted out, "Cleavage".
宗教心の全く無い私はこの高校生の答えに納得したくなります。 "cleavage" と "cleave" （"separate or cut with a tool, such as a sharp instrument; "Cleave the bone".)の意味は知っていますが、ここでの "cleave to" はその様な意味ではなく、文脈からして（またcling/stick/adhere toを連想させるので） "to be faithful" の様な意味だと推測できますが辞書で確認します。

1. to adhere closely; stick; cling (usually fol. by to).
2. to remain faithful (usually fol. by to): to cleave to one's principles in spite of persecution.

The early Christians were known to cleave to their beliefs despite heavy persecution. (cling, stick)
She cleaved to the memories of her life with her husband and found it difficult to move on after he died. (clung)
それにしても "cleave" に "split" と "stick" の正反対の意味があるのは不思議ですね。
P.S. "cleavage": "the area between a woman's breasts, esp. when revealed by a low-cut neckline."
