Japanese tourist dies after reef dive
A 67-year-old Japanese tourist has died while diving on the Great Barrier
Reef off far northern Queensland.
The man was taking part in an organised dive at Hastings Reef, near
Cairns, late this morning.
Col McKenzie, from Dive Queensland, says the man had extensive diving
experience.
Mr McKenzie says it is likely the tourist suffered a heart attack.
"It appeared that everything was okay right up till the end of the dive,"
he said.
"[The tourist] surfaced at the end of the dive, signalled that he was
okay and then as the rest of the dive team surfaced around him he got
into some kind of difficulty and he was duly put in the rescue tender.
"They needed to do resuscitation, which they did, but unfortunately
he didn't make it."
