Today, let's practice some English phrases for English only week at English Plus.
At English Plus, we hold "English Only Week" every once a month.
During this week, all of our students must speak only English during lessons.
The next term is from next Tuesday to Saturday, November 23rd - November 27th.
Even though Nov 23rd is a national holiday, we're open as usual.
If they speak Japanese, there is a penalty waiting for them.
So, today I'd like to introduce some English phrases that might be useful during English Only Week.
For instance...

・言おうとしていたことを忘れました ＝ It slipped my mind.
・ここまで出かかっているんだけど ＝ It's on the tip of my tongue.

Let's try only English next week!

Today, let's learn and practice some basic English.
There are a wide variety of lessons available at English Plus, and one of the most popular lessons is "Conversation".
In this lesson, the students can learn and practice basic English vocabulary, grammar, expressions, and pronunciation for English communication.
The aim of our Conversation lessons is that students master some basic English skills, and gain confidence to communicate in English.
Through the lessons, students learn fundamental vocabulary, grammar points, and so on, and after that they have enough time to practice using what they learn during lessons.
It might take some time to master basic English skills; however, we try to support our students by offering lessons regularly and constant self-study support.
If they take lessons regularly and do self-study constantly in their free time, they can improve English skills a lot faster than we expect.
Anyway, during our Conversation lessons, our students can learn a lot of basic English grammar, and one of the most important points to master is "verbs."
We understand that beginner English learners have difficulty mastering verbs, so today, let's learn some verbs.
Now, let's check the second most frequently used 25 verbs listed below, and read them out loud if possible. (If you don't know the meaning of the word below, you should look it up in your dictionary.)

Today, let's learn and practice some basic English.

Today, I'd like to write about the last one of our seven unique attempts to help students improve their English skills at our English school.
Our school, English Plus, is a small English school, but we're serious about helping our students improve their English skills, and we are trying to provide some supports and several approaches.
There are actually seven approaches we are trying to provide, and today let's check the last one.
The last one is about our student-centered lessons.
At English Plus, we provide lessons for adults (e.g. TOEIC exam preparation course, Skill-Up Conversation course, and so on), and for kids (e.g. Elementary school English course, and Junior high school English course).
No matter what lessons our students take, in each lesson, there is time for "learning" and "practicing" English.
In order for our students to learn English more effectively, each lesson has a lesson point and they learn the point by listening, speaking, reading and writing.
After they learn the lesson point fully, they practice English using the lesson point.
It's up to each student about how to use the lesson point during the lesson, and we encourage our students to use the point and communicate in English a lot.
To help them improve their communication skills, we have "student-centered lesson", and we try not to make "a teacher asks a question and a student answers" situation.
Instead, we try to make "student A asks a question to student B" situations in our lessons.
This communication between students requires some skills, such as "make a question and ask → listen to the question correctly → answer the question → make a reaction and ask a following question → continue..."
At English Plus, we help our students to acquire these basic English skills through our lessons and self-study support.
We'll continue supporting our students to improve their English skills from now on too.

The fifth one today is about our practical yet fun lessons.
At our English school, we're really serious about supporting our students to improve their English skills.
In order to support our students' improvements, there are several things we are trying to do and one of them is providing not only practical but also fun lessons.
Since we believe "English is for communication" and "communication should be fun", we're providing practical lessons; plus, during the lessons, we try to make each lesson content more fun.
Then, our students can enjoy learning English more in the lesson.
To support our students to improve their English skills, we're continuing to give good English lessons at English Plus.

English Plus is a small school located in Tamachi, Tokyo.
We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today, I'd like to write about one of our seven unique attempts to help students improve their English skills at our English school.
At our English school, there are several courses available and our students can take different types of lessons, such as TOEIC, Skill-Up Conversation, Power-Up Conversation, and so on.
If a seat is available, our students can take any lessons they want at our school.
Our school, English Plus, is a small English school, but we're serious about helping our students improve their English skills, and we are trying to provide some supports and several approaches.
There are actually seven approaches we are trying to provide, and today let's check another one of them.
The fourth one today is about training four skills through each lesson.
Even though each lesson's aim is different, our lessons require the students to use four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Why students need to use all four skills in our lessons is we believe well-balanced English skills are important in order to acquire English communication skills, for instance, verbal communication requires listening and speaking skills.
Sending and receiving e-mail require writing and reading skills.
Therefore, in our lessons, students listen, speak, read and write English a lot through all our lessons.
I hope through our lessons, students can acquire well-balanced English skills and use English anytime, anywhere.
We are continuing to support our students to improve their English skills from now on too.

We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today, I'd like to introduce one of English Plus' lesson programs.
There are several English lessons and courses available at English Plus, and if you would like to "speak more fluently", "enjoy English conversation more naturally", and "talk about a wide variety of topics", we recommend our "Power-Up Conversation" lessons.
In this "Power-Up Conversation" lesson, you can learn some practical phrases and expressions, and practice a lot in order to use them more naturally.
The phrases and expressions you can learn in this lessons are such as "how to continue conversation", "how to change conversation topics", "how to enjoy English communication more", and so on.
To improve especially speaking skills, we have quite long time for our students to practice speaking English in the lessons.
Even though the main aim of this "Power-Up Conversation" course is to speak and communicate more smoothly, we include listening, reading and writing practice to improve well-balanced English skills.
If you want to practice communicating in English a lot, we recommend English Plus' Power-Up Conversation lessons.
The length of each lesson is 90 minutes, so it means there is lot of time to communicate in English.

Today, I'd like to write about one of the features of English Plus' lesson.
English Plus is a small, friendly, fun, and also has a family atmosphere English school; thus, we can listen to our students' comments directly and support them by providing necessary service in order to help them improve their English skills.
That's the reason why when we know and realize their weakness, we can suggest some effective self-training methods for each of them.
We usually tell our students that "taking lessons regularly" is important, and also "doing self-study constantly" is also necessary to improve English skills.
To maximize the efficiency of lessons, at English Plus, we mainly provide 90-min group lessons, which consist of maximum 4 students in a class.
After the lessons, we give our students some homework and most of them try and submit it the next time they take lessons.
It's because we have decided our school motto "Every day English" and we encourage our students to do some English study in their free time.
In addition to our school system, there are various features of our lessons, and today I'd like to write one of them.
One of our lesson features is "Practical & Original curriculum and lesson."
All of our group lessons are based on our original curriculum, which means our students don't use or follow specific textbooks.
This means our students never do "repeat after me" or "memorize dialogues in a textbook" during our lessons.
Instead, in our conversation lessons, our students try to make dialogues by themselves.
For instance:
Student A: Ask B a question (e.g. What did you do last weekend?)
Student B: Answer A's question (e.g. I went shopping.)
Student A: Listen to B's answer and make a comment & ask another question related to the answer (e.g. I see. Where did you go shopping?)
Student B: Answer A's question and ask A a question (e.g. I went to Odaiba. How about yourself? What did you do last weekend?)
Student A&B's conversation continues.
This is just an example and in our lessons, we encourage our students to speak a lot during lessons.
In order for them to speak a lot and enjoy communication, we try to support our students to acquire basic English skills through the lessons and self-study support.
Basic English skills at English Plus mean they can make sentences freely and accurately.
To master basic English skills and communication skills, our lessons are carried out on our practical original curriculum.
Our original curriculum contains our instructors' teaching experience and some important points that we've learned through TESL curriculum.
The curriculum is separated by each level, from beginner to high intermediate, and our students can effectively learn important tips for acquiring basic English and communication skills.
In addition, this curriculum includes not only our instructors' teaching experience but also our students' and staff members' learning experience, so it is more practical.
After every lesson is done, our teachers check the lesson to see if the lesson was easy for our students to understand or if there is something we should change about it.
For better lessons, we update and improve our lessons every day.
We are going to improve how to teach English from now on too.

Today, I'd like to write about our Business English courses.
Since English Plus started in 2011, we have made and provided a lot of lessons for our students.
For instance, for adult's students lessons, we have...
・"Skill-Up Conversation course" to get basic English skills for communication
・ "Power-Up Conversation course" to improve fluency, and communication skills
・ "TOEIC exam preparation course" to achieve their target score of the TOEIC exam
・"Travel Conversation course" to enjoy traveling abroad, and so on.
For kids' students, we offer...
・"Kids English course" for elementary school students
・"Junior high school English course" for junior high school students
In addition to these courses, we have a special course for business people "Business English course."
In this 90-min lesson, our students can learn "how to introduce themselves in business situations", "how to make small talk", "business phone call", "business e-mail", and so on.
Through this course, we hope our students can master basic English skills and communication skills for business situations.
This year, we've checked the whole curriculum and improved each lesson to provide better English lessons.
Now it's done, and we are currently looking for those who are interested in learning Business English.

Today, I'd like to write about one of the features of English Plus' lesson.
English Plus is a small, friendly, fun, and also has a family atmosphere English school; thus, we can listen to our students' comments directly and support them by providing necessary service in order to help them improve their English skills.
That's a reason why when we know and realize their weakness, we can suggest some effective self-training methods for each of them.
We usually tell our students that "taking lessons regularly" is important, and also "doing self-study constantly" is also necessary to improve English skills.
After the lessons, we give our students some homework and most of them try and submit it the next time they take lessons.
It's because we have decided our school motto "Every day English" and we encourage our students to do some English study in their free time.
We, English Plus, believe "taking lessons regularly" and "doing self-study constantly" are really important to improve English skills, and to maximize the lesson efficiency, our class size is max 4 students in a class.
This "small class size" is one of our lesson features.
As you probably know, from the communication point of view for most people, English is not an academic subject but a communication tool.
Considering English as a communication tool, the most important tip is how we use English after learning it.
In other words, practicing English a lot with others helps us improve our English skills.
Of course, one-to-one teaching helps us improve our English skills, but a lot more students in a class can help us improve our English skills more since there are a lot more conversation topics in a class, a wide variety of expressions and vocabulary we can learn, and we can hear other people's opinions too.
However, if there are too many students in a class, it's difficult to speak out or ask questions during a lesson.
Also, there isn't much time to speak English in a class or teachers can't focus on each student's speech when they speak at the same time.
Therefore, at English Plus, our class room size is small - max 4 students in a class.
This small class room size can help our students to communicate more, and our teachers can help our students when necessary.
We feel that this class room size is very effective for our students to improve their English skills.
Since I've personally experienced teaching English at a vocational school, whose class room size was big - 30 students in a class, and at a famous English conversation school, whose class room sizes vary and I taught one-to-one too, 4 students in a class is great!
Actually, there are some other features of our lessons and self-study support, so I'd like to introduce one by one in this blog in the near future.
We haven't been satisfied with our current teaching style yet, and we're looking for better ways to teach English from now on too.
