英語学校起業へ向けての友人との店舗チェック

Good morning and thank you for your visit!
Lately, I've spent quite a lot of time looking for a place for my English school to get started, and I finally found a good one.
Yesterday, after I taught several lessons in Tokyo, I had an opportunity to talk with a friend whom I hadn't met for a long time.
I asked the friend, who is actually much younger than me but he's had more business experience than I have, to check a building, and to give me some honest opinions about the place.
He was willing to help me and I really appreciate his advice and comments about the place, which were overall positive.
So, from now on, I'm going to check the place a little more and check some subsidies!
There are still a lot of things to take care of before my English school to start, but I'm going to prepare for it step by step!

本日は“英語学校起業へ向けての友人との店舗チェック”です。

最近は英語学校の場所決めのため、時間を見つけては東京・神奈川いろいろと歩き回っています。

そんな近頃ですが最近、自分の英語学校ができそうな店舗を一件、見つけることができました。

昨日は東京都内でのレッスンが終わり、しばらく会っていなかった友人と会い、一緒にその物件を見に行きました。

その友人は自分よりもずっと若いのですが、ビジネスの経験がたくさんあるため、一緒にその場所まで歩いてもらい、その場所に関しての率直な意見やアドバイスを伺いました。

友人は“英語学校の場所として良い”というようなコメントをくれましたので、今後、自分でもう少し店舗周辺のチェックや補助金なども調べてみたいと思います。

英語学校起業のためにやるべきことは、まだまだありますが、（友人・家族・たくさんの人の力を借りながら）一つずつこなしていきたいと思います！！

忙しい方に特におすすめの朝の時間を有効に使う英語学習のすすめ

Today, I’m going to write about why learning English in the morning is good for busy people.
Last summer upon a student request, I had a chance to give an English lesson in the early morning.

Actually, the lesson started at 7:20 every day in the entire summer.
What I realized was that learning English in the morning is a good idea for especially busy business people since they can control time in the morning more easily than night time.
When I was working for a big English conversation school, there was a very convenient system of changing class and a lot of students, who are buisness people, used the system since they had to work overtime or some other reasons.
Therefore, I can recommend learning English in the morning especially great for busy people.
Another positive aspect of learning English in the morning is that learning English can be one’s routine easily!(As you probably know that it takes some time to master English so making English learning a routine is important.)
If you are thinking about learning English (but you are very busy), why don’t you consider learning English in the morning?
You can start with Ondoku (reading out loud)!

昨年の夏は生徒の方のリクエストにより、東京都内のカフェで早朝英語レッスンをしていました。

実際、レッスンは７：２０分から毎日１時間ありました。

レッスンをしていて気付いたことは、早朝の英語レッスンは（自分が早朝レッスンを始める前に思っていたよりも）効果的で、特に忙しい社会人の方には特に良いと思ったことです。

大手の英会話学校で教えていた時、朝のレッスンはなく、夜の多くのレッスンでは“残業などの理由のため”多くの社会人の生徒の方々は振り替えのシステムを利用し、振り替えをしていました。

この点を考えても、忙しい社会人には“時間をコントロールしやすい”朝の英語学習は夜に比べ効率的です。

また、朝に英語学習をすることの一番のポイントは“英語学習が習慣化しやすい”という点です。
（ご存知だとは思いますが、英語をマスターするには時間がかかるため、毎日規則正しく学習する習慣化は必須です！）

英語を学びたい・・・けれど忙しい方、朝に英語の学習をしてはいかがでしょうか？
音読など簡単にできるものから始めるのがおすすめです！

Today, I’d like to write about some phrases that you can use when you talk about a third-person in business.

Actually, the phrases I’m going to write about today can be used anywhere in business, but if you work in the personnel department, you might be able to use these phrases more often since you may have some opportunities to talk about a third-person.

TOEICテストの問題集(Part 1)を使ってスピーキングの練習

Today, let's try speaking practice in order to not only get a better TOEIC score but also improve speaking skill.

This speaking practice requires just a couple of minutes, but it's great if you want to improve both your TOEIC score and speaking ability!
What you need is the TOEIC official practice test published by IIBC (Institute for International Business Communication) OR if you have other TOEIC practice tests, you can also use them.
Now, let's see how to carry it out:
1. Look at a picture of TOEIC part 1 (e.g. the sample picture below)
2. Describe the picture in 1 minute and if possible speak out loud (*Try to think in English)
・They are talking about something.
・They are discussing.
・One man and two women are in the office.
3. Check the script of the picture
If you continue this speaking practice in your free time, I'm sure you'll be able to describe a scene in front of you easily, and it means your speaking ability is improving!

このスピーキング練習には、国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協会 (IIBC)から出版されているTOEIC新公式問題集をお持ちの方でしたら、その新公式問題集を使えますし、他のTOEIC問題集でも代用可能です。

それではTOEIC Part1を使ったスピーキングのトレーニングです！！

1. TOEIC Part1の問題を見ます（例 上記のサンプルの写真）

2. 写真を１分で描写します（可能でしたら声に出して描写しましょう、また英語で考えることがポイントです）

When I was living in Toronto, Canada, I usually cooked my own food in order to save money.
Before I left for Toronto, I didn’t cook by myself so often, so I was a bit worried about it.
However, after I started going shopping for my food and cooking, I realized that cooking is fun!
Yesterday, an event reminded me of that cooking story, so today, I’m going to write about some English vocabulary related to cooking.
For example…

TOEIC新公式問題集（Part 2）を使ってリスニング力アップのトレーニング

Today, I’d like to write about a training method of how to strengthen your listening skill in and get a higher score in TOEIC.

The training I’m going to introduce from now on is good for especially someone who doesn't have much time until the next TOEIC test but wants to get good TOEIC score!
If you want to get good TOEIC score quickly, you should definitely focus on listening since it takes less time to improve your listening score than reading score.
To carry out this training, what you need is Official TOEIC preparation TEST Volume 4 (by IIBC) and an MP 3 player or a portable CD player.
The training is called “Shadowing in your mind.”
“Shadowing” is one of training methods that can be done anywhere, anytime and it’s very effective.
Here is how…
1. Listen to a question sentence from the TOEIC Part 2.
2. Right after you hear the question sentence, stop the CD & you repeat what you’ve just heard in your mind.
e.g. (you hear) “How about going out for lunch?”
(in your mind, you repeat) “How about going out for lunch?”
3. Imagine the situation.
e.g. (in your mind) “maybe, a friend is asking his/her friend out for lunch.”
4. Play again & listen to the 3 answer choices & repeat each choice in your mind.
5. Choose the answer.
6. Check the script to see if the sentences your repeat are correct.
If you continue this training every day, I’m pretty sure your listening skill will improve!

TOEICまで時間があまり無いけれども、TOEICのスコアを少しでも早く点数を伸ばしたいという方は、リスニングに重点を置いたほうが賢明です。

理由は“リーディングに比べリスニングの方が速く伸びる”からです。

このトレーニングに必要な物は、国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協会 (IIBC)から発行されているTOEIC新公式問題集Vol.4とiPodなどのMP3playerもしくはCDが聞ける機材です。

今日おすすめの“頭の中でのシャドーイング”トレーニングは、リスニング力を伸ばすために毎日続けるととても効果的です。

それではトレーニングの仕方です：

1. TOEIC Part2の中から問題文１つを聞き、止める

2. 問題文を聞いた後、頭の中で今聞いたことをリピート（シャドーイング）する
例）”How about going out for lunch?”という文が聞こえたら、頭の中で “How about going out for lunch?”と繰り返す

3. 聞いて、シャドーイングした文章のシチュエーションを想像してみる
例）”How about going out for lunch?”と聞こえたので、シチュエーションとして“友達がランチに誘っている”場や“同僚がランチに誘っている”という風に想像してみる

4. 止めていた問題文の続きの３択の答えを聞き、１つずつ頭の中でシャドーイングしてみる

5. ３択の中から答えを選ぶ

6. 答えの確認と想像していたシチュエーションが合っていたか、スクリプトを見て確認

毎日TOEIC新公式問題集を使ってこのリスニングの練習をしますと、リスニング力が付いてくると思いますので是非お試しを！

英語レッスンの中でたびたび耳にするItの使い方の間違い

Today, I’d like to write about common grammar errors that my students often make during the lesson.

While giving a lesson, I always keep a pen and a piece of paper with me to check students' vocabulary & grammar errors.
Why I do so is at the end of each lesson, I can give students my feedback of the lesson, and they can review and learn something new.
This feedback is quite popular because some students have given me some positive comments about this feedback system.
Last week I did the same routine with a pen and paper as usual, and noticed that there were some common grammatical errors.
For example…
・I took 30 minutes longer than usual.
・Today is raining.
・Nowadays is very convenient to take trains anywhere in Tokyo.
Maybe you may have realized that the mistake is “It.”
Here are the correct sentences…
・It took 30 minutes longer than usual.
・Today, it is raining.
・Nowadays, it is very convenient to take trains anywhere in Tokyo.
Let’s learn and use correct English step by step!

普段英語のレッスンをしている時、紙とペンは常に手元に置いておき、生徒の方々の語彙や文法のチェックをしています。

チェックしたものは生徒の方用のフィードバックとして使っており、数名の生徒の方から“レッスンの復習”や“文法の見直しができて良い”というコメントをいただいております。

先週も同様に、普段通りレッスンの中で語彙・文法の間違いをチェックしました。

先週チェックした中で、“It”の使い方を間違えている頻度が高いことがわかりました。

例えば・・・

・I took 30 minutes longer than usual.

・Today is raining.

・Nowadays is very convenient to take trains anywhere in Tokyo.

上記の例の中では、（文法が間違えていても）意味が通じるのもあるのですが、何が違うかおわかりでしょうか？

答えはこちら・・・

・it took 30 minutes longer than usual.
・Today, it is raining.
・Nowadays, it is very convenient to take trains anywhere in Tokyo.

少しずつ正しい英語を学び・使っていきましょう！

英語講師の留学経験 - スーツケースを買うための値段交渉の巻

Today, I’m going to write about my story about the first negotiation when I was in Toronto, Canada.

Have you ever tried negotiating in your life when shopping?
As for me, yes, I have and it was the first time to negotiate in my whole life.
It was in the summer of 2005 just before coming back to Japan.
I stayed in Canada for almost 2 years and had a lot of stuff, so I needed a bigger suitcase to pack every valuable thing I had.
Therefore, I went to the China town and searched for a suitcase.
Actually, without a problem, I could find a lot of suitcases there, however, the only problem was they looked all similar and the only difference was the price.
So, I decided to talk to an owner, who looked kind, if he would be willing to give me a discount or not.
Here’s a part of the negotiation…
I asked him, “Hi, how much is this?”
He replied, “It’s $40.”
I said, “Oh, really? That’s a little expensive. Could you give me a discount?”
His first reaction was not so positive, and said “hmm…”
I said, “how about $35?”
He said, “No. $38.”
I said, “If I can get it for &36, I can introduce your shop to my friends.”
He said, “Hmm…okay. You can get it for $36.”
I don’t remember the story exactly, but it was something like this.
As a result, it was my first negotiation ever and I was able to get 10% discount!
This is another story but after that one of my friends needed to buy a suitcase when going back to Japan, I recommended him this shop.
I went there with him and he was also able to get some discount!
Toronto is a multicultural city and it means there are a lot of people.
We can’t negotiate in some shops, but if you have a chance, why don’t you try?
It’s a good chance to experience something new!!

このブログを読んでくださっている皆様は、買い物時に“値段交渉”というものをしたことがありますでしょうか？

自分はカナダでの留学時に初めて“交渉”ということをしました。

２００５年にカナダから帰国する時、カナダに計約２年滞在しており、たくさんの荷物がありました。

そこで、大きいスーツケースが必要だと思い、トロントのチャイナタウンにスーツケースを買いに行きました。

実際、チャイナタウンにはたくさんのお店があり、問題なくスーツケースは見つかったのですが、問題はスーツケースは似たようなものばかりで、違いは値段のみでした。

そこで意を決し、話しやすそうなオーナーのお店で値段交渉にトライしてみることにしました。

以下、交渉のやりとりの一部です・・・

arata：“Hi, how much is this?”
（おいくらですか？）

オーナー： “It’s $40.”
（＄４０だね）

arata：“Oh, really? That’s a little expensive. Could you give me a discount?”（本当に？少し高いなぁ。少しディスカウントしてくれますか？）

オーナー：His first reaction was not so positive, and said “hmm…”
（・・・）

arata：“how about $35?”
（それなら＄３５でどうですか？）

オーナー： “No. $38.”
（ノー。 ＄３８）

arata：“If I can get it for &36, I can introduce your shop to my friends.”（＄３６にしてくれたら、友達にこのお店を紹介します）

オーナー： “Hmm…okay. You can get it for $36.”
（ふーむ。オーケー）

こんな感じのやりとりだったことを覚えています。

結果として、初の交渉で１０％のディスカウントを手にすることができました。

これは余談ですが、その後、スーツケースが必要な友達がおり一緒にこのお店に行きました。

この時も友達はいくらかディスカウントをした値段でスーツケースを手に入れることができました。

カナダ・トロントは多民族国家で本当にいろいろな人種の人が住んでいます。

もちろん、交渉できないものもたくさんありますが、交渉できるよな機会があれば、挑戦してみてはいかがでしょうか？

新しいことを経験できるまたとない機会になると思います！

英語力の基礎となる語彙力・文法力を鍛えよう

I’d like to write about what is important to improve your English skills today.

As I wrote about the four basic English skills in the blog above, there are four basic skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
However, before using these four skills, you should keep in mind that there are two things you need to learn, which are Grammar & Vocabulary!!
Without them, all these four functions don’t exist; I mean it's because you know some grammar and vocabulary, you can hear some English with your ears, you can speak, read, and write!!
So, the first thing you have to learn is to learn some basic English vocabulary and grammar!
From today, let's try one of these trainings, which can be done every day!

上記の関連記事の“英語コミュニケーション上達のコツ - ４つのスキルの上手な使い方”でも述べましたように、英語には４つのスキル（リスニング・スピーキング・リーディング・ライティング）があります。

が、この４つのスキルを使う大前提として“文法と語彙の基礎能力”が必要になります。

この“文法”と“語彙”抜きにして、４つのスキルは成り立ちません。
