For most of my life I did not imagine that my father would be publishing a work of creative fiction, any more than I thought small college towns like Amherst or Charlottesville would appear as a detail in a Japanese novel. Both of these things happen in his latest work, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, A Novel (forthcoming 2014, Gendaishokan). The novel is somewhat non-literary and decidedly middle-brow, more of a Dan Brown than a David Foster Wallace, but I will say it isn't sensationalist and that the historical details and political analyses are accurate and relevant. Like all of his other (non-fiction) books, it's still a political expose drawing from his years serving in the field of intelligence and diplomacy. I'm not the first person with the ability to tear it up into shreads in no time at all as I have the training to do as a literary critic, but to do so would be to miss the po
int of what critical thinking is supposed to be about. It only meant that I could well anticipate possible attacks of such nature on the novel when I read his first draft back in December. But I said he should change nothing. Who cared about predictable snobbery from the literary establishment. His audience is the marginalized majority, the very average Japanese citizen, about whom fellow intellectuals sincerely enough claim to care about and just as often fail to connect with. The novel is populist through and through, but there is nothing wrong with that voice which may succeed in speaking to the critical mass he cares about, articulating their fears for them in a language they understand, and becoming their advocate. That is who he seems to have become, or perhaps that is who he always was-- not so much a government official as he was a public servant.
小説というより政治本なのでしょうね。発売が楽しみです。
