BBC GaaSyy: Japan YouTuber MP expelled for never going to work 14 Mar 2023 By Shaimaa Khalil

A celebrity gossip YouTuber turned MP will become Japan's first lawmaker to be kicked out of parliament without ever actually entering it.

Yoshikazu Higashitani was expelled on Tuesday by his Senate colleagues for never coming to work.

He has not attended a single day of parliament sessions since being elected to office seven months ago.

The parliament's discipline committee stripped him of his status because of the continued absence.

Expulsion is the most severe punishment a lawmaker can receive. It has happened only two times since 1950 and this is the first time an MP has been expelled due to continued absence.

He is one of two members elected from the Seijika-joshi-48 opposition party.

 セイジカ・ジョシ・48なんて政党名が伝わるのは、なんというか情けないというかなんというかなんというか。

BBC China boosts military budget while warning of escalating threats 5 Mar 2023

China will increase military spending by more than 7% this year, while warning of "escalating" threats.

It was announced at the National People's Congress (NPC), a rubber-stamp parliament, which is due to confirm President Xi Jinping's third term.

Beijing's military budget - around $225bn (£186bn) - is still dwarfed by that of the United States, which is four times greater.

But this year's sessions are particularly significant as delegates are expected to reshape several key Communist Party and state institutions.

This week's NPC meeting will also formalise Mr Xi's leadership of the country, as he will be elected president of China and head of the armed forces.

BBC Mauritania not inviting Wagner group - president 2 Mar 2023

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani says his government has no plans to invite mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group to help in the fight against Islamist insurgents.

Countries in the Sahel region, including Mauritania's neighbour Mali, are using fighters from the shadowy private military company to fight a Jihadist insurgency that has left thousands dead.

"It's simply not the case... we are a sovereign country and will remain so," Mr Ghazouani told the BBC's Caroline Loyer.

BBC Villagers shot and homes burnt down in central Mali 24 Feb 2023 By Will Ross

Suspected Islamist militants have killed at least 12 people in central Mali's Mopti region.

Officials said gunmen burst into a village in Cercle de Bankass, shot at people, burnt homes and then chased those trying to flee into nearby forests.

One official said as many as 19 bodies had been found and the search for more victims was continuing.

Last June an attack in the same area left more than 130 people dead.

BBC Lavrov in Africa: Have Wagner mercenaries helped Mali's fight against jihadists? 7 Feb 2023

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has promised continued military support for Mali, which has been battling a jihadist insurgency since 2012.

Last year, Mali turned its back on former colonial power France favouring help from Russia instead.

It is now more than a year since Wagner Group fighters began operating in Mali, though the authorities have never formally confirmed this.

But evidence suggests that they have not been any more successful than other forces in dealing with the decade-long jihadist threat and insecurity may have worsened.

Civilian casualties as a result of violence more than doubled last year, according to data from the crisis mapping organisation Acled Info.

Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin has cheered the propaganda campaigns as "the new era of decolonisation", exploiting long-standing distrust of former colonial power France.
