bas-relief and antediluvian

ヘレン・ケラーの "The Story of My Life" に化石の話が出てきますが、まるで化石が見える様な文です。
Once a gentleman, whose name I have forgotten, sent me a collection of fossils--tiny mollusk shells beautifully marked, and bits of sandstone with the print of birds' claws, and a lovely fern in bas-relief. These were the keys which unlocked the treasures of the antediluvian world for me.
"bas-relief" と "antediluvian" は知らない言葉なので辞書を見ます。　まず、 "bas-relief"を調べます。
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: sculptural relief in which the projection from the surrounding surface is slight and no part of the modeled form is undercut; also : sculpture executed in bas-relief
・Century Dictionary: Low relief; in sculpture, a form of relief in which the figures or other objects represented project very slightly from the ground. The most artistic examples of bas-relief often present to the observer the illusion that their carving has considerable projection. A bas-relief, or a work in bas-relief, is a piece of sculpture in this form. Compare alto-rilievo and mezzo-rilievo.
"alto-rilievo" を見ると、"High relief; sculptured work in which the figures project more than half their thickness." とありましたので、"mezzo-rilievo" はその中間である事は調べずとも分かります。 "bas/mezzo/alto" は音楽用語で聞いた事がありますね。
さて、"antediluvian" は "diluvian" の前の時代を意味するようですが、いつの時代でしょうか？

2. chiefly humorous, ridiculously old-fashioned: they maintain antediluvian sex-role stereotypes
なるほど、元々の意味はノアの洪水前の意味だったのですね。

wired/hard-wired

Reader's Digest 9月号の記事Addicted to cutenessからです。
Quite simply, fascination with babies, kittens and puppies is in our genes. When creatures have round faces, large eyes and heads bigger than their bodies, we're wired to goo-goo. Don't believe me? Visit YouTube and enter "science of cute"!
"wired" の意味は文の前後から見当がつきます。赤ん坊とか子犬、子猫などを可愛いと感じるのを人間は生まれつき組み込まれていると言うことでしょう。しかし辞書で "wired/wire" を見てもこの様な説明は見あたりませんでした。 昔になりますがコンピュータの修理（ハードウェアエンジニア）をしていたので "wired" は "hardwired/hard-wired" の略ではないかと気がつき辞書を見直すと、次ぎのような説明がありました。
・Wordnik: .In humans and animals, genetically determined, instinctive behavior, as opposed to learned behavior; The existence of a moral sense is "hardwired" like the ability to learn language..
・Dictionary.com: pertaining to or being an intrinsic and relatively unmodifiable behavior pattern: Every cricket has a hard-wired pattern of chirps.
・Macmillan Dictionary: behavior that is hard-wired is caused by your genes and the way that your brain is made, rather than learned from experience
最新のコンピュータのＣＰＵ/LSI（ハードウェア）を作るのは素人ではできませんがプログラムは素人でも作れます。 "wired/hardwired/hard-wired" の代わりに "programmed" でも上の引用文と同じ意味で使われる可能性はあると思いますがどうでしょうか？（辞書では例は見つかりませんでした。）　

white horse

ジョークのネタの底がついたので、今日はやむなく "dirty joke" を採り上げます。
A: Do you want to hear a dirty joke?
B: Ok
A: A white horse fell in the mud.

口直しに私がつい最近耳にした実話を紹介します。
私がよく行くコーヒーショップでは必ず、「砂糖とクリームは？」と客に尋ねます。私はいつも「クリームだけ二つ」と応えています。先日帰り際に、ある客がこの質問に対し、「たっぷり」と答えていました。私の後ろでの会話だったので店員の表情も客の容姿も見ていませんが、客はデジタル全盛の現在もアナログにこだわる中高年か、店員をからかうのが趣味の人だったのでしょうね。

roly-poly

Reader's Digest 9月号にAddicted to cutenessと題した記事に面白い表現が二つありました。
まず最初の単語のあった文です。
What is it about toddlers with roly-poly thighs, kittens playing knitting and puppies loping about on giant paws that turn grown-ups into mush?
"roly-poly" ですが、記事には丸々とした赤ちゃんの写真が載っていたので辞書をひかなくても意味は分かります。赤ちゃんの手足のぷよぶよ（日本語だとどうしてもオノマトペになってしまいます）した感じを英語ではこう言うのかと感心します。一応辞書の説明を一つだけ引用します。
・Wiktionary: (colloquial, often childish or humorous) short and plump
もう一つの単語は月曜日に回します。

sough

昨日話題にした "katydids " のあった文に続く文を引用します。
I felt the bursting cotton-balls and fingered their soft fiber and fuzzy seeds; I felt the low soughing of the wind through the cornstalks, the silky rustling of the long leaves, and the indignant snort of my pony, as we caught him in the pasture and put the bit in his mouth - ah me! how well I remember the spicy, clovery smell of his breath!
「雪がしんしんと降る」、「雨がしとしと」など日本語では便利なオノマトペがあり、多用しますが、英語ではオノマトペは幼稚とされ余り使われないと何かの本で読んだことがあります。その為に日本語ではオノマトペで表現する事を英語で何と言うかは私には難し過ぎる問題ですが、ある人が英語では日本語ではオノマトペで表現する微妙で繊細な感覚・英語がないと言っていましたが、それは大きな間違いだと思います。確かに英語ではオノマトペは日本語の様には余り使いません。その代わりだと思いますが、ニュアンスの異なる形容詞、動詞が一杯あり、その別々の単語を使い分けしているのだと思います。その事が英語を学ぶ外国人にとって難しいところだとも思っています。英語は文型・文法は比較的単純なので入り易いが、語彙が多いので奥が深い言語だと思います。　何故こんな事を言い出したのかと言うと上に引用した文の "soughing" （原形は "sough") の意味を辞書で知ったからです。
・Dictionary.com: to make a rushing, rustling, or murmuring sound: the wind soughing in the meadow.
・Macmillan Dictionary: To make a soft murmuring or rustling sound.; The sough of the wind in the trees grew rhythmic, hypnotic, lulling.
・Compact Oxford English Dictionary: (of the wind in trees, the sea, etc.) make a moaning, whistling, or rushing sound.
引用したのは動詞としての意味ですが、 "sough"は名詞としても使われます。発音は "sow" と "suf" の両方の言い方があります。 人間の基本的な感覚、感情は本来余り変わらないのですが、言語により表現法が違うのだとつくづく思います。

katydid

ヘレン・ケラーの "The Story of My Life"からです。
We read and studied out of doors, preferring the sunlit woods to the house. All my early lessons have in them the breath of the woods--the fine, resinous odour of pine needles, blended with the perfume of wild grapes. Seated in the gracious shade of a wild tulip tree, I learned to think that everything has a lesson and a suggestion. "The loveliness of things taught me all their use." Indeed, everything that could hum, or buzz, or sing, or bloom, had a part in my education--noisy- throated frogs, katydids and crickets held in my hand until, forgetting their embarrassment, they trilled their reedy note, little downy chickens and wild-flowers, the dogwood blossoms, meadow-violets and budding fruit trees.
"katydids" は昆虫か小動物の一種に違いありませんが何でしょうか？

バッタの一種の様ですが、やはり写真を探した方が分かり易い。 Googleで探した写真を見ると日本のキリギリスと似ています。

duplicitous

Reader's Digest 9月号のThe Inanity Defence と題された間抜けな犯罪者の事件簿からです。
You leave IOUs. Graham Price of South Wales ripped off the bank where he worked, but he wasn't completely duplicitous. He left a note in the safe: "Borrowed, seven million pounds" - signed "Graham Price".
"duplicitous" は２と関係が有るようですが何でしょう。辞書で調べます。
・Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary: deceptive in words or action; warned her not to trust the duplicitous art dealer
・WordNet 3.0 Vocabulary Helper: ambidextrous, deceitful, double-dealing, duplicitous, Janus-faced, two-faced, double-faced, double-tongued -- marked by deliberate deceptiveness especially by pretending one set of feelings and acting under the influence of another
同意語が "two-faced, double-faced, double-tongued" とあるように２と関係がありましたね。二枚舌や裏表のある人につける形容詞でした。

shellacked/shellac

英単語のメルマガ、ArcaMaxは平日は毎日一つの単語を取り上げているのですが、日曜日は一つの単語を取り上げるのではなく、発行者のRob Kyffさん（学校の先生だそうです）が複数の英単語を色々な角度からの視点で解説してくれます。１１月１３日は次ぎの文で始まっています。
Two presidents. Two midterm elections. Two words for getting clobbered. In 2006, George W. Bush described the repudiation of his Republican Party as a "thumpin'." This year, Barack Obama said he and the Democrats had suffered a "shellacking."
取り上げられた単語は　"thumpin'."（普通の英語は "thumping."） と "shellacking." で、この後の文でこの二つの言葉の由来を説明しているのですが、全部引用すると長いのと "thumping."についてはだいたい知っていることなので省略し、 "shellacking." の説明個所のみ引用します。
Befitting Obama's international background, "shellac" has exotic roots. It's a blend of "shell" and "lac" (a resinous secretion of an insect), from the Hindi "lakh."
When the French first used a purified version of lac to create a varnish with a hard, shell-like finish, they called it "lacque en ecailles" (lac in thin plates). During the early 1700s, the English adopted this term and Anglicized it to "shellac."
The use of "shellac" to mean "beat up," evolved from the similarity between the rapid, repeated brush strokes used to apply shellac and the strokes used to batter a person. Not surprisingly, "shellacked" also came to mean "drunk."
なるほど、 "lac" は "lacquer" と同類なので "shellac" の元の意味はすんなり理解できます。それが "beat up," の意味を持つ様になったのも説明を読むと分かりますが、言葉の意味や用法は時代と共に進歩すると言うか、変わるものなのだとつくづく感心します。一応 "shellac" の辞書の説明も見ておきます。
・Oxford Dictionary: North American informal defeat or beat (someone) decisively: they were shellacked in the 1982 election
・Wiktionary: (informal, US) To inflict a heavy defeat; to drub; to batter. Used primarily in sports and political contexts.
・Urban Dictionary: destroy, dominate in competition, thrash, beat; We were getting shellacked so badly the ump reinstated the slaughter rule; I know my dad is going to shellac me when he sees this report card.
辞書の用例にも選挙での敗北で使われていることが分かりました。

a battery of tests

何の記事かメモするのを忘れましたが次ぎの文はReader's Digest 9月号にあったものです。
Quinn was drafted as a young broadcasting school graduate. But after a battery of tests revealed that he had an unusual aptitude for languages, an Army recruiter leaned across the desk and said, "How'd you like to be a spy?"
"many" を表す英語はそれこそ "many" ありますが、上に引用した文中の "a battery of tests" の "a battery of" もその一つだと推測しますが辞書で確認します。

・Compact Oxford English Dictionary: a set of similar units of equipment, typically when connected together an extensive series, sequence, or range of things: children are given a battery of tests
・Macmillan Dictionary: a group of similar things; He put her through a battery of tests.
"many" と言う訳ではなく、"a group of similar things" なのですね。　ほとんどの辞書の例文に "a battery of tests" が使われているのは偶然ではないようです。

Little Problem

Our school had just installed a new air-conditoning systems, and a representative from the company wanted to make sure it was running smoothly.
