Pinball, 1973の語り手の "I" は以前夢中になったSpaceshipと言うタイプのピンボール、日本に３台だけ輸入され、今はない、そのピンボールをある収集家が持っている事を知り、見に行きます。

この後とくに興味を覚える単語も出てこないでPinball, 1973の話は終わっていましました。 結局語り手と同棲していた双子の女も理由も分からずどこかへ行ってしまうし、Ratも行きつけのバーＪのマスターに別れを告げやはりどこかに行く話しで終わり。私には結局何が何だかさっぱり分からない話でした。図書館にある村上春樹氏の英訳本を全て読むつもりだったのですが、読む気はなくなりました。ノーベル文学賞候補に上がる程の作家だそうですが、私の感想はPinball, 1973に出てきた次ぎの文章と同じです。

村上春樹氏の日本語文は知りませんが、英語に翻訳された英語自体は良い英語だと思います。しかし、卒論を指導した大学教授がピンボールの語り手に言ったように、私も "Where's the beef?" と言いたい。
