Germany: Gütersloh slaughterhouse infections spread to community

Until recently, a massive coronavirus outbreak at a Tönnies slaughterhouse has largely been confined to workers. There has now been a noticeable spread into the community, tests have revealed.

There has been a "noticeable" increase in the number of coronavirus infections among the wider population of Gütersloh, the western German region surrounding a slaughterhouse that suffered a massive outbreak, local authorities reported on Sunday.

To date, infections have largely been limited to the employees and associates of the Tönnies meat processing plant, however, the outbreak appears to have spread to the community.

Over the past seven days, 75 cases were found in the wider population with no connection to the abattoir. That is 28 more than previously reported.

The district said that this is likely due to an increased amount of testing in the area. Many of those tested showed no symptoms and there was no increase in the number of patients.

With summer holidays coming up, non-symptomatic people have a greater incentive to get tested and potentially be allowed to travel out of the lockdown area.

Thousands of cases

By Friday evening, 2,203 coronavirus infections were recorded in the Gütersloh district, most of whom worked in the meat plant or were associated with it. Of these, 748 are considered to have recovered and 1,434 are still infected.

Some 29 patients are currently being treated as inpatients, five of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 21 people have died since the beginning of the pandemic in the region.

The outbreak has led to a state decree that all employees in the meat industry must be tested for the coronavirus at least twice a week starting in July. 

Companies are also required to collect the names and addresses of all people present on the business premises. 

A significant number of clusters in Germany have been linked to meat processing plants that have exceptionally poor working and living conditions for predominantly Eastern European workers.

The latest outbreak has triggered calls for a complete overhaul of working conditions in the meat industry, repercussions for Tönnies, and uniform nationwide guidelines for dealing with coronavirus hotspots. 

As a result of the outbreak, the state government has ordered an extensive lockdown for the districts of Gütersloh and Warendorf, initially until next Tuesday. By then, at the latest, the government must decide how to proceed.

An international summit has raised billions for the fight against the coronavirus, with a star-studded concert afterward. The campaign behind the events stresses the importance of world unity in overcoming the crisis.

A virtual pledging summit held on Saturday as the culmination of a campaign launched by the European Commission and advocacy group Global Citizen has raised €6.15 billion ($7.01 billion) to help fight the coronavirus pandemic, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

The conference, entitled Global Goal: Unite for Our Future — the Summit, was attended by several world leaders, artists and activists.

Von der Leyen spoke of an unbelievable result. The Commission and Germany together pledged around €5.3 billion, and other large pledges came from the US and Canada, among other countries.

Angela Merkel promised an additional €383 million at the summit while von der Leyen announced that the EU would provide an additional €4.9 billion. Germany had earlier promised €525 million for investments in vaccines.

Almost €10 billion was collected from EU, governments and billionaire philanthropists at a first fund-raising summit on May 4.

Speaking before the summit, von der Leyen said that a challenge such as the pandemic can be met "only if the world unites," stressing that investment in vaccines was needed at "unprecedented speed and scale."

Reporting on the summit, DW's chief international editor Richard Walker said much of the money would go to organizations that can coordinate the production and testing of vaccines.

Star-studded concert

Star musicians and actors then took part in an online concert also aimed at gaining funding to help the world combat the pandemic with vaccines and medication and to aid the hardest-hit communities to recover.

The concert, entitled Global Goal: United for our Future — the Concert, was hosted by actor Dwayne Johnson, and featured performances by musicians such as Shakira, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

Personalities such as Chris Rock, Hugh Jackman, Charlize Theron and David Beckham also took the stage.

Ahead of the events, von der Leyen spoke of the power of artists "to inspire change." She said that at the two events, artists, scientists and world leaders would "speak with one voice, in a true and rare moment of global unity."

She also said the European Union was "fully committed to ensuring fair access to an affordable vaccine, as soon as possible, for everyone that needs it."

“I am really pleased that the government will look into the possibilities of making zones that are free of noisy and polluting vehicles, as well as looking into the possibility that we as a municipality can help pay for a shore power plant that we have requested,” said Copenhagen mayor Frank Jensen.

Charging stations
The municipalities have their own initiatives to abide by the agreements. Frederiksberg, for instance, is vying to be the number one electric city in Denmark by ensuring there is only a maximum of 250 metres between one’s home and a charging station.

In Aarhus, the goal is for all new municipal vehicles to be zero emission from 2025. Aalborg meanwhile, is constructing a Plusbus or BRT route to encourage more citizens to take public transportation.

The minister of transport, Benny Engelbrecht, entered into the agreement with the mayors, saying he hopes more municipalities will follow suit.

Microplastics have reached one of the world's most remote food systems, a new study has found. The findings raise concerns over the future of Antarctica's fragile ecosystem, which is already threatened by climate change.

For the first time, scientists have discovered microplastics inside small organisms living in the soil in Antarctica, according to a new study published on Wednesday.

"Plastics are thus entering the short Antarctic terrestrial food webs and represent a new potential stressor to polar ecosystems already facing climate change and increasing human activities," said the authors of the study, which was published in the scientific journal Biology Letters.

The research team, which was headed by Italy's University of Siena, collected organisms from a piece of polystyrene foam that was covered in moss and lichens on King George Island.

Using an infrared imaging technique, researchers found pieces of polystyrene — which is used in styrofoam — in the guts of collembolan Cryptopygus antarcticus, or springtails. 

The small organisms are frequently the "dominant species" in areas of Antarctica that are not covered by ice, typically feeding on lichens and micro-algae.

Researchers said the springtails likely consumed the plastic fragments while eating their usual food.

Dangers of plastic pollution

The authors of the study said the traces indicate the microplastic pollution may have already "deeply" infiltrated Antarctica's remote land-based food system.

"The implications of plastic ingestion by this species include the potential redistribution of microplastics through the soil profile and transfer to their common predators, the moss mites," Elisa Bergami of the University of Siena told news agency AFP.

Although plastic pollution in the oceans is already widely known and well-documented, Bergami said that less attention is being paid to Antarctica's land contamination.

The presence of plastics in one of the world's most remote food chains could potentially stress Antarctica's fragile ecosystem even further.

Scientific research posts, military facilities and tourism have turned the area around King George Island in the South Shetland Islands into "one of the most contaminated regions of Antarctica," researchers said.
