Coronavirus: UK approves Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine

Britain is the first country in the world to have approved a vaccine developed by the University of Oxford as it battles a new, highly contagious variant of the virus.

British regulators on Wednesday approved a coronavirus vaccine designed by scientists at the University of Oxford.

The UK has ordered 100 million doses from the manufacturer AstraZeneca — enough to vaccinate 50 million people.

The approval, by the medicines regulator, means the vaccine is classed as both safe and effective.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson hailed the "fantastic news" as "a triumph for British science."

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in an interview that the government "can now accelerate the vaccine rollout."

How effective is the vaccine?

Regulatory endorsement is a welcome boost for AstraZeneca and the Oxford team, which have been accused of a lack of clarity about the results from late-stage trials.

Pooled results from those trials show it had overall efficacy was 70.4%.

Efficacy was 62% for trial participants given two full doses, but 90% for a smaller sub-group given a half, then a full dose.

Researchers said that the finding of 90% efficacy for the low-dose/high-dose regime needed more investigation. AstraZeneca did not specify which dose regime had been approved.

翻って日本、本日の東京は944人と速報されています。前述の理屈と同じく、感染者が増えれば死者数も増えるのです。そして、この後に及んで都知事は“年末年始は分水嶺“と発言していますが、相変わらず他人事（ひとごと）発言に聞こえます。自分ごととして、都の首長としての発言ではないと思います。

東京を日本のエピセンター（震央）にしてしまったのは都知事にも大きな責任があります。そして、首都圏の各県にもその余波を与えていることは明白です。エビデンスがないなどと言わせません。兎に角、即座に緊急事態宣言を発出して東京都をロックダウンすべきです。

PM（首相）も、“そのような状況下にない“などと言っていないで、即座に実施すべきです。“先手先手で“と言ったのはPM自身ではありませんか（兎に角、後手だらけ。言っていることとやっていることは大きく乖離）。不信感が募ります。

The UK reported its highest day of new coronavirus infections on Monday, with 41,385 new COVID-19 cases. The surge, driven by a new, more contagious variant of the virus, is forcing hospitals to cancel non-urgent procedures and scramble to find space.

There were 357 new deaths reported.

"This very high level of infection is of growing concern at a time when our hospitals are at their most vulnerable," said Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director at Public Health England.

The new variant is believed to be up to 70% more contagious, although it does not appear to make people more sick.

Large swaths of the country have been put under restrictions that have closed nonessential shops, and banned indoor socializing and dining at restaurants. Nonetheless, hospital admissions for COVID-19 in southeast England are approaching or exceeding the levels of the first outbreak peak.

Dr. Nick Scriven, former president of the Society for Acute Medicine, said that the rising number of hospitalizations was "extremely worrying."

"With the numbers approaching the peaks from April, systems will again be stretched to the limit," he said.

日本では、何か中途半端な対策（？）が続けられている為、感染者数は一部地域を除いて減少の傾向が感じられません。特にエピセンター（震央）になっている東京は、連日の過去最多が伝えられている状態です。遅きに失していますが、それでも強制的な規制の実施が望まれます。先ずは２週間で良いのです（永久ではありません）。それで人の動きを止めるのです。結果、経済も復活させることが出来るのです。“二兎を追うものは一兎をも得ず“です。国会議員や政府は年末年始も休んでいる場合ではありません（都知事も）。必要な措置を打ち出すべきです。

報道されていますが、国会議員の羽田氏がコロナによって53歳で亡くなりました。この年齢でも基礎疾患等があれば、急変もあり得ることと理解すべきです。若いから軽症・無症状で済むとは限りません。後遺症は一生残るものもあるのです。街に出てはならない時には、強く意識して自粛をするべきです。会食は人数に限らず論外と考えるべきでしょう、それに類するものも。

どこかの国に比べて、数値が低いとか言って安心を強調する輩が時折居ますが、そうではなくて、実数（絶対値）も見るべきでしょう。例えば、UKでの死者数は7万人を超えています。一方で日本は3,000人強、これを比較して日本は安心とは絶対に言えません。

同様に“率“で比較して、“日本は低いですよ“と言わんばかりの発言をする人物がいましたが、それも不適切な発言です。率は低くても、絶対数として通常は無かった数値が発生していることそのものに脅威を感じ・認識し・身構えるべきでしょう。

もう一つ、未だに若者は安心・軽症で済むなどとの流言が蔓延っているように思いますが、後遺症のことを考慮するならば、若者とて安心など出来ないのです。しかも、後遺症によっては、生涯残るものもあるのです（EU情報）。こうした情報を、マスコミがより正しく報道してくれるならば、これだけ医療危機が叫ばれているにも拘らず、繁華街への人出が減らない、むしろ増えていると言うようなことにならないと思います。

さらに、ニュース番組の中で、デパートなどのイベント情報を楽しく伝える姿勢は好ましくないと感じています。人出を誘うような報道は“今は“控えるべきです。そうではない面が出てしまっているので、意識の薄い人は誘われてしまうのでしょう。マスコミの責任・自覚を問います。
