　TIME,NEWSWEEKのやさしい記事からの英検１級対策語彙に、本日以下の単熟語を追加しました。

　語彙増強にはさまざまな方法があります。私のおすすめする方法のひとつは、実力相応の英文をたくさん読んで自分に合った形で教材化することです。
　たとえば、女性イスラム教徒が被るベールについて論じたCultural FabricというTIME誌に掲載された記事の冒頭は以下のようになっています。

For Muslim immigrants in the U.S., the days following 9/11 were a harrowing encounter with American hate. iPod-bearing, second-generation techies faced insults in Silicon Valley parking lots; schoolgirls in headscarves were attacked; mosques across the country were vandalized. For many months, it seemed unclear whether America's Muslims — from the cocktail-swilling secular to the mosque-attending pious — would ever live again without apprehension.

　これをコピーして以下のような教材を作れます。個人的に使う限り、著作権上の問題が生じることはまず考えられません。

この記事はおおむね英検１級の長文レベルです。同レベルの記事を３００本位読んで頻出語彙を覚えれば、１級の長文と語彙に関しては合格ラインをクリアーできると思います。

無料ロングマン英英辞典サイトで作成するリスニング＆語彙強化教材

　現在ネット上で使える無料英英辞典のサイトLongman onlineを使うと、以下のような単語集が簡単に自作できます。

　という形態で、英英式の定義から単語を推測する方式になっています。english x englishに含まれる単語の多くは基礎的なもので類推も容易なものの、英検１級レベルの単語を定義からノーヒントで類推するのは骨が折れます。
　そこで、

　被験者によりますと運転中の使用は危険なくらい英語に集中できるということでした。安全に十分配慮してお試しいただければ幸いです。

コウビルド英英辞典CD-romによる語彙強化問題の自作

　英和方式で英単語の意味をひたすら日本語で覚えていくのは無味乾燥な作業で、頭が良くなることも余り期待できないです。しかし、英英辞典方式の語彙強化ならば、英語の説明を読んで理解するという思考訓練を通しての語彙強化が可能です。
たとえば今回の英検１級語彙問題に出題された、tout, expedite, catalystをコウビルド英英辞典CD-romで検索すると以下のように説明されています。

If someone touts something, they try to sell it or convince people that it is good.

If you expedite something, you cause it to be done more quickly. (FORMAL)

You can describe a person or thing that causes a change or event to happen as a catalyst.

　これだけでも英和方式よりははるかに効率よく英語に触れられる単語帳になります。
　「英検１級対策語彙」もできればこういった英英式で紹介したいと思うものの、著作権の関係でネットには流せません。しかし学習法のサンプルとして紹介する程度なら許容範囲でしょうし、個人的に英英辞典から単語帳を作っても問題が生じることはまず考えられません。
　さらに、

　といった黒塗りを単語力に応じて加えていけば語彙強化問題が簡単に自作できます。

英英式ラウンドボキャビルシステムのすすめ

　昨日、ここのブログで言及した勝間和代さんは公認会計士で、どちらかといえば文系の仕事をなさってるようです。批判はあるらしいものの著書多数でいわゆる時の人なのでしょう。私は著書を読んだことはありませんが、「とにかく覚えろという詰め込み教育が苦手だった」という一節はとても興味深く感じました。文系であれ理系であれ、考えることより暗記することが好きなようでは、頭を使って本を書くような仕事には向かないでしょう。
　とはいえ、暗記を全否定するわけではないです。ここのブログのメインテーマである英語においては特に、基礎単語を暗記しないことには話になりません。しかしいつまでも暗記中心の英語である必要はないと思います。
　たとえば、TIME誌2009年Sept18号のSewn in Secret : Iranian Designers
という記事の第三段落に、
　Lacking the manpower to crack down on this barrage of Western clothing, authorities have zeroed in on local designers—especially female ones—whom they consider a greater threat to the values of the theocratic regime than racy imports like Victoria's Secret lingerie or Manolo Blahnik pumps.という文がありました。
　crack down onもzero in onもニュース記事を読むにあたってよく見かける重要イディオムです。ただ、カードの表裏に英和の意味を書いて覚えるような無味乾燥なことをしなくてもイディオムの習得は可能です。

　Lacking the manpower to ●●ack down on this barrage of Western clothing, authorities have ●●roed in on local designers—especially female ones—whom they consider a greater threat to the values of the theocratic regime than racy imports like Victoria's Secret lingerie or Manolo Blahnik pumps.

とすれば、簡単に自作教材ができてしまいます。墨塗りの量は力に応じて調整すればレベル相応の教材になります。

　加えて単語も簡単に自作教材を作成できます。前述のSewn in Secret : Iranian Designers
には、surreptitious,censor,evade,scrutiny,strongholdといった重要単語が登場しました。私がパソコンにインストールしているコウビルド英英辞典を使いますと、

第１ラウンドとして

さて第２ラウンドでは墨塗りをしていきます。

　このやり方だと文脈力を伸ばしながらの語彙強化が可能で、私はこれを「英英式ラウンドボキャビルシステム」と名付けて、おおむね高校生レベル以上の学習者に紹介してきたところ大変好評です。第１ラウンドでガチガチに暗記する必要は全くありません。英英方式のボキャビルは英和方式のボキャビルよりもずっと頭を使うとはいえ、ただ暗記するよりもうろ覚えの単語を文脈に合うように思い出そうとする方がさらに頭を使うように思われるからです。

語彙強化教材自作のすすめ

　　教科書であれ参考書であれ新聞、雑誌であれ、読んだ英文記事を捨ててしまうのは非常にもったいない行為です。
　たとえば、先程紹介したReagan's Speech That Ended the Cold War
という記事の冒頭ですと、マジックを塗るだけで以下のような語彙強化教材が簡単に作れます。

　The fall of the Berlin wall caught the world by surprise.
For months, East Germany's　①●eleaguered communist rulers had tried in vain to silence a growing opposition movement and ②●tem the tide of people pouring out of the country.

　学習効果は非常に大きく、使用済みの教科書を一部黒塗りして高校生に読ませたところ英語の成績が急上昇した例がありました。単語暗記の退屈さをかなり軽減できることに加えて文脈を読む力も養成できます。大人でも子どもでも、思考能力を伸ばしたかったら暗記のような作業は必要最小限にとどめる工夫が必要です。
　どこにマジックを塗るか、何文字消すかは学習者が自分のレベルに応じて決めればよいでしょう。
　上の例ですと①b ②sと余白にでも答を書き込んでおかないとあとで面倒ですのでご注意下さい。パソコンを使ってペーパーレスでやることも可能です。
　言うまでもなく英文はネイティブが日本人読者を全く意識せずに書いた「天然英語」がベターです。個人的に使用する限りは著作権法上の問題が発生することは考えられません。

「オズの魔法使い」とTIMEに共通する難単語

　　オズの魔法使いで主人公のドロシーが家もろともハリケーンに巻き込まれたシーンでAfter the first few whirls around, and one other time when the house tipped badly, she felt as if she were being rocked gently, like a baby in a cradle. というくだりがありました。
　ここでのwhen the house tipped badlyは、「家がひどく傾いたとき」という意味で、tipは「傾く」という意味の自動詞です。

Different Shades of Green in Africa
という伝統的な農耕方法と新しい農耕方法の優劣を巡る論争がアフリカに発生していることを伝えるTIMEの記事の中に以下のようなくだりがありました。

There are two ways of tipping a balance sheet into the black: raising revenues or cutting costs.
(ふたつの方法がある / バランスシートを黒字にtippingするための : 収入を上げること、あるいはコストを削ることである）

※tipには「傾く」という意味の自動詞の意味があることを知っていれば、「バランスシートを黒字にtipping（傾ける）するための」という他動詞的な読み方も容易にできると思います。辞書を確認しますと、tipは自動詞「傾く」、他動詞「傾ける」の両方の意味で使われています。
　児童書を高い精度で読むことは、TIME,NEWSWEEKの読解力養成にもつながる英語学習法です。

「オズの魔法使い」のキーワードcharmをめぐる雑学

　オズの魔法使いではcharmということばが頻繁に登場しキーワードになっています。「魔力」と理解すればよいでしょう。
　ちなみにこのcharmには「お守り」という意味もあって制作後７０年近く経ても名作と評されるラブストーリー「哀愁」にも登場しています。

「哀愁　ビリケン　charm」で検索すると以下のようなサイトが見つかりました。

ロイの耳にマイラの声が蘇ります。ふたりの出会いと別れが回想の形で語られていきます。」

　１９９０年頃のラブストーリー「ゴースト」では硬貨がcharmの役割を演じ、映画の中でそう呼ばれていた記憶があります。ただこれは商業的にはヒットしたものの後世には残りそうもない映画で、「ゴースト　硬貨　charm」でグーグル検索しても見つかりませんでした。しかしセリフの量が多く教材にして惜しくはない映画ですのでリスニング用にはおすすめできます。
　charmという単語が試験に出ることはあまりないでしょうけれども、同じ単語が「魔力」になったり「お守り」になったりすることを面白いと感じられるようであれば英語力は伸びていくと思います。

ボキャビルの極意

　強いオスを狩猟の対象にすることで、弱いオスが子孫を残すという不自然な淘汰が発生していることを伝えるIt’s Survival of the Weak and ScrawnyというNEWSWEEKの記事に、以下のようなくだりがありました。

the evolutionary loser is not the small and defenseless, but the biggest and best-equipped to win mates or fend off attackers.

　ここでのwin matesとは配偶者を得るという意味です。しかし「仲間に勝つ」という誤読が少なくありませんでした。winもmateもけっして難しい単語ではありませんが、ニュアンスまでしっかりつかむにはたくさんの用例に触れる必要があります。良質な単語力をつける最良の方法は、ネイティブの定義（英英辞典の定義）で単語の意味を理解してネイティブの用例にたくさん触れることです。
　以下の記事はアメリカの小学校２～３年生向けのTIMEFORKIDSのカバーストーリーから選んだやさしく・短く・面白い2002年春の記事です。速読の教材にもボキャビルの教材にもなります。やさしい単語でも多数の用例に触れることでしっかりした語感ができてきます。

考える単語カードのすすめ

　表面に英単語を書いて裏面に日本語の意味を書いた単語カードは昔からよく使われてきました。しかし、いったん英英辞典が使えるようになったら単語カードも英英化した方がはるかに効率的です。
　動詞eschewはきのう紹介した英検一級、TOEIC900点レベルの必修単語です。

The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online
を使って、

表面）to deliberately avoid doing or using something: ＝（es　　　　　 )
裏面）eschew (Ex : I had eschewed politics in favour of a life practising law.)
という「考える単語カード」が簡単に作れます。

表面の定義文と冒頭の二語（もちろん、三語でも一語でも構いません）から裏面の単語を推測するのは、日本語混じりの記憶をたどるだけの単語カードよりもはるかに英語頭を使うため、効率的に英語思考力を養成できます。

　単語カードを作るのが面倒であれば、

to deliberately avoid doing or using something: ＝（es　　　　　 )


eschew (Ex : I had eschewed politics in favour of a life practising law.)

といった具合に適当な間隔を置いて定義文と解答を貼り付けて、解答は下敷きででも隠しながら練習すればよいでしょう。要するに、記憶力だけではなく思考力を鍛えるようなトレーニングをすれば、語彙強化を通して英語思考力も伸ばすことができます。
