1911年に菱田が36歳で夭折すると大観は大いに嘆き、菱田春草追悼展の開催を主導し自らも『五柳先生』（東京国立博物館蔵）を出品した。

When Taikan's friend died young in 1911 at the age of 36, he deeply lamented it and took the initiative in holding an exhibition in memory of Shunso HISHIDA, sending

his own work, "Goryu Sensei" (now in the possession of the Tokyo National Museum) to the exhibition.

 

晩年に至るまで、自らが日本画の巨匠と称されるたびに「あいつ（菱田）が生きていたら俺なんかよりずっと巧い」と口にしていたという。

Until his later years, whenever he was called a great master of Japanese painting, he 

reportedly said, 'If that guy [Hishida] were alive, he would be better than I am.'
