At English Plus, we encourage our students to try to speak English a lot especially during lessons.
Once in a while, they make some mistakes, but they really try hard and try to express what they want to say in their own words. (Great Job!)
Through the lessons at English Plus, I realized there are some mistakes our students often make, so today let's review not to make the same mistake again.

There are various students studying at our English school.
Some people are office workers, some are students and so on.
One time during lesson, my students introduced each other and they asked their names, occupations and so forth.
One student wanted to tell the others his/her occupation but didn't know the specific vocabulary.
So, today let's practice the vocabulary together!
When we want to talk about the grade at university, we can say...
・Freshman
・Sophomore
・Junior
・Senior
and after graduating from a university, some people might go to...
・graduate school
When you have a chance to talk about university, let's use them!

English Plusに通って下さる生徒の方々は様々で会社員・学生の方など、色々な方に通っていただいています。

先日、レッスンの中で生徒の方同士で英語で自己紹介してもらい、名前や職業などをお互いに聞きあっていました。

その時、お一人の方がご自身の職業を伝えたかったようなのですが、それを表現する英語が、日本人にはなかなか馴染みのない英語だった、という事があったので、今日は“大学の学年”を表現する時に使える英語を紹介したいと思います。

大学の学年を伝える時は…

・Freshman（大学１年生）

・Sophomore（大学２年生）

・Junior（大学３年生）

・Senior（大学４年生）

なお、大学院は“graduate school”という英語になります。

大学に関して話すことがあれば使ってみましょう！

How are you doing?
Today, I’d like to write about my first travel abroad experience and useful phrases I learned through the trip.

When I went abroad alone for the first time in my life, it’s ashamed to say but at that time, I couldn’t speak English at all.
(I mean “Not at all” compared with my current English ability.)
I had neither knowledge nor courage to speak English.
However, at that time, I was a university student and I wanted to go abroad because I had a long vacation.
So, even though I couldn’t speak English, I decided to travel around Europe by train called Eurail for a month.
At that time (about 10 years ago), I didn’t have useful electric devices, such as dictionary or PC.
What helped me the most during the trip was a book containing a lot of useful English phrases when traveling abroad.
Wherever I went (even not English speaking countries), I found out some English expressions are very useful!
Aside from very basic greeting expressions (e.g. Thank you), for instance…
“I’d like...” & “I’d like to...”
Of course, you can use “I want…” and “ I want to…” instead of “I would like…” and “I would like to…”
So, what I’m suggesting here is at least you should master very basic English phrases, such as “I would like…” or “I would like to…” before going abroad.
Anyway, the trip itself was very fun and I didn’t have any big trouble at all.
Of course, I had some minor trouble, such as I almost took a different train, there was no room available at a hotel in Stockholm and so on.
Overall, I really had a good time and experience!

本日は“英語講師の留学経験～番外編 カナダ留学以前の初の海外旅行ヨーロッパ一人旅と役に立った表現～”です。

自分の人生において初海外旅行に行った当時、恥ずかしながら英語はこれっぽっちも話すことができませんでした。
（今現在の状況から考えますと“全く話せない”と言っても言い過ぎではないくらい話せませんでした・・・）

当時の自分は充分な英語の知識や英語を話す勇気もありませんでしたが、当時大学生であったこと＝時間（休み）はたくさんあったため、英語が話せないにも関わらず無謀にも１ヶ月電車（ユーレイル）を使ってヨーロッパを周遊しようと思いつきました。

当時（１０年前）は役に立つ電子辞書やパソコンも持っておらず、旅行に行った時に手元にあったのは“ヨーロッパ６ヶ国語”なる本一冊でした。

ヨーロッパの中では英語圏ではない国もありましたが、英語でもフランス語でも何語にも共通して役に立つ表現があることに気がつきました。

それは基本的な“Thank you”などの挨拶の表現に加え、“I’d like...” と“I’d like to...”という表現です。（どちらも“～が欲しいです“という表現になります）

“I’d like...” と“I’d like to...”という表現の代わりに“I want…” と “ I want to…” という表現も使うことができます。

覚えておいて損はないので、しっかりとマスターしておきましょう！！

ちなみに初の海外旅行は大きなトラブルはなく、１ヶ月でヨーロッパを周遊し無事に楽しく終えることができました。
（電車を間違えそうになる、ホテルは空きが無い・・・などの小さなトラブルはありましたが）

また旅行時の小さなトラブルとトラブルの切り抜け方に関しては、今後のブログで紹介したいと思います。

Good morning.
Last weekend, Center-Shiken, National Center Test for University Admissions, took place all around Japan.
When I was reading a newspaper last Sunday, I found the English exam, so I tried some of the questions.
The last time I took this exam was about 12 years ago, and I clearly remember it was really difficult.
However, this time after finishing answering some of the questions, I, as an English teacher, thought that "having fundamental English skills is important!"
I mean“if you have fundamental English skills, you can adjust to, technically, any forms of English test, such as TOEIC.”
Specifically, increasing vocabulary and mastering some basic grammar are the important keys, and with these vocabulary and grammar, you should use English in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing as much as possible!!
The easiest and best way to establish fundamental English skills is to make practicing English a part of your daily life!!

本日は“英語講師がセンター試験（英語）を解いて思うこと”です。

先週末、大学入試センター試験が日本で行われました。

センター試験の翌日、新聞を見ていると英語の試験が目にとまったので、何問か挑戦してみました。

約１２年前に現役で挑戦した時は、とても難しかったことを記憶していますが、今回何問か解いて、英語講師として思ったことは、“英語の基礎力をしっかりつければ、（基本的には）ＴＯＥＩＣなど、あらゆるテストに対応できる”ということです。

特に大事なのは“英語の基礎力となるボキャブラリーを増やすこと、と基礎文法をマスターすること”です。

そしてこの“学んだボキャブラリーと文法”を“しっかりと使う（“聞き・話し・読み・書く”）こと”が基礎力をつける際、大切です。

英語の基礎力をつけるのに一番効果的で、かつ簡単なのが“英語学習を生活の一部にしてしまうこと”です！！是非！！

Today, I’d like to recommend a very simple yet effective training method “Ondoku - reading out loud.”
Recently, I read a good-related article in Nikkei Business Associe. (21st Dec, 2010)
In that, Prof. Itsuo Shirono, who is giving a lecture at Meikai University, is recommending Ondoku - reading out loud training for TOEIC test.
I, as an English teacher, personally agree with his method for not only improving TOEIC test score, but also daily English training!
Here is how to do Ondoku...
1. Prepare a book, which has English & Japanese translation on it (e.g. TOEIC official test book)
2. Do Ondoku (Read out loud) in English first, then Japanese every day
*The point is that you need to continue every day even if you don't have time, you should read out loud at least 1 passage.
As the result is shown in Nikkei Business Associe, I’m sure you’ll be able to improve your English skills as well as your TOEIC score.
It’s because you read sentences out loud, and at the same time listen to your own pronunciation.
This means you are using your eyes, mouth, ears at the same time.
Good training is that many senses (such as seeing, speaking, listening) should be used, therefore, I can say Ondoku training is a really good training method!
Actually, I’ve been trying this Ondoku training ever since I started this career as an English teacher.
So, I can really recommend it!!

本日は“英語講師おすすめのシンプルな音読トレーニングで英語力アップ”です。

今日おすすめの“音読トレーニング”はシンプルですが、とても効果的なトレーニングです。

最近読んだ日経ビジネスアソシエ（2010年12月21日号）の中でも紹介されている方法をご紹介します。

日経ビジネスアソシエの中では、特にTOEICの, スコアアップのために音読が推奨されていますが、英語講師として個人的には、音読はTOEICに限らず、どの英語の分野でも応用の効くトレーニングだと思っています。

具体的なトレーニングの仕方としましては・・・

１．英語・日本語がある本を用意する
（TOEICの点数アップが目的ならTOEIC公式問題集がおすすめです）
２．１日１ページで良いので音読をする（英語・日本語の順で声に出して読む）

ポイントとしましては、ただひたすら声に出して読むこと！
忙しい日でも１ページだけでもよいので読むこと！続けることがカギです！！

前述の日経ビジネスアソシエにも書いてありますが、このトレーニングを実践することでTOEICの点数が上がっている人もたくさんいます。

なぜかと言いますと、“声にだして読むことで自分の発音が聞こえる”、と言うことは“他の人の英語が認識できる”ということにつながるからです。
（良い英語トレーニングほど多くの器官 - 耳・口・目を使います。）

個人的な話になりますが、英語講師として仕事を始めて以来、音読トレーニングを続けており、おすすめできるトレーニング方法の１つです！！

Good morning!
How are you doing?
Today, I’m planning to attend an ELT expo in Tokyo.
The ELT expo is an event for English teachers (including ETJ members) in Japan, and there are some seminars about how to teach English in the ELT expo.
Also, English textbook publishers, such as Oxford University Press, can give a presentation of their textbooks to English teachers.
(ETJ stands for English Teachers in Japan.
It’s an association for English teachers in Japan and its aim is technically to improve English teachers' teaching skills.)
I've participated in this expo twice before, and this time will be my third time.
Through my past experience, I can say that this is a great event, because I can learn different teachers' teaching ideas and methods!!
Very famous English teachers sometimes give a lecture too!!
This time also, I hope I can learn something new!!
P.S.
I gave my presentation about my English school at the business seminar in Kawasaki yesterday.
The attendees were all cooperative and I was really glad to have the chance to give a presentation.
Words can’t describe how glad I am, but I really appreciate every and each one of attendees, stuff members, and the lecturer, Mr. Koji Takeuchi.

本日は“１年に１度の英語ティーチング勉強会 - ELT Expoへ参加!!”です。

ELT Expoとは、ETJの会員（ETJとはEnglish Teachers in Japanの略で英語ティーチング向上を目指す日本人・外国人問わない英語講師から成る非営利の組織です）の英語講師をメインに、日本にいる英語講師（日本人・英語ネイティブ問わず）も対象とした“英語の指導法を向上させることを目的にしたセミナー”＋“色々な出版社（Oxford University Pressなど）の教材紹介”のためのイベントです。

このイベントには今年で３回目の参加ですが、過去２回とも、著名な英語の先生の話や、他校で教えられている先生のティーチングの話は、聞いていて“とてもためになる話が多く、使えるアイディアも豊富”にあります。

今回も何か新しい“ティーチングの発見”ができるよう、しっかり勉強してきます！！
