Today, I'd like to give a piece of advice for English learners.
I guess you are busy every day...but if you want to communicate in English, you should use your time well to learn English!
In your daily life, I'm sure that you can find your spare time such as...
"when you are on the train", "when you iron your shirts", "when you cook", "when you watch television commercials", "In the washroom"...you name it!
While you are doing the activities above, you can learn English!
For example, you can try...
・Read English books
・Read English sentences out loud
・Review vocabulary that you've learned this week
・Try to translate Japanese sentences into English and so on...
Let's use time wisely to improve English!

本日は“すきま時間を上手く使って英語力をアップしよう ～ すきま時間有効活用のすすめ”です。

英語をマスターしたいけれど、毎日忙しくて…という方がたくさんいらっしゃると思いますが、忙しい方ほど時間を有効活用して英語学習することをおすすめします。

日常の生活のリズムを見てみると、どこかで“すきま時間”があると思います。

例えば…

“通勤中の電車の中”

“アイロンをかけている時”

“料理をしている時”

“ＴＶのコマーシャルの時間”

“トイレに入っている時”

など、まだまだ挙げられると思いますが、これらの時間を上手く使って英語学習をしましょう！

“すきま時間”を有効活用できる英語学習方法としましては…

・英語の本を読む

・英文の音読

・今週学んだ英単語・英語表現の復習

・目に入った日本語を英語に訳す練習、などなど…

時間を上手く使って英語学習に活かしましょう！

Today, let's practice some useful English expressions.
Winter vacation is coming soon, and some people might be thinking about going abroad this vacation.
So, I'd like to introduce some English expressions that can be used when you go shopping for clothes.
For instance...
・When you want to ask where the item you are looking for is...
"Where can I buy a shirt?
・When you want to see the item, you can say...
"I'd like to see the shirt over there."
・If you want to see the different color of the same item...
"Do you have this in red?"
・If you want to try it on, you can say...
"Can I try this on?"
・If you want to know another person's opinion, you can say...
"Does this look good on me?"
・When you purchase, you can use this expression...
"Could you wrap these separately?"
If you have a chance to use the expressions above, try one!!

本日は“海外旅行ショッピングの時にすぐに使える英語”です。

クリスマスが近づき、冬休みも近くなってきたこの頃ですが、この休みを利用して海外旅行を計画している人もいるかと思います。

今日は海外旅行の時の楽しみの１つとも言える“ショッピングの時に使える英語”を紹介したいと思います。

例えば・・・

・探している商品の場所をたずねたい場合・・・
"Where can I buy a shirt? "（シャツはどこにありますか）

・商品を見たい時・・・
"I'd like to see the shirt over there."（あそこにあるシャツを見たいのですが）

・他の色の商品が見たい時・・・
"Do you have this in red?"（この赤色の商品はありますか？）

・試着をしたい時・・・
"Can I try this on?"（試着してもいいですか？）

・他の人（店員）の意見を聞きたい場合・・・
"Does this look good on me? "（これは似合っていますか？）

・商品を購入する時・・・
"Could you wrap these separately?"（別々に包んでいただけますか？）

ショッピングの時、上記のような表現を使うとショッピングが楽しく、スムーズにいくとと思います。

Good morning!!
How's your weekend so far?
During lesson, I always check and correct my students' vocabulary & grammar errors, and last week I did the same too.
As I checked their mistakes last week, I realized that they used what it's called "Japanese English vocabulary" during lesson.
For example:
(Japanese) trainer = (English) sweatshirt
(Japanese) sharp pencil = (English) mechanical pencil
(Japanese) viking = (English) buffet
(Japanese) fried potatoes = (English) French fries
(Japanese) Y-shirt = (English) dress shirt
(Japanese) salary man = (English) office worker
(Japanese) consent = (English) outlet
I guess these mistakes are made by not only my students but a lot of Japanese people.
So be careful when you use English!!

本日は“レッスン中に発見した間違えやすい日本語英語”です。

普段レッスンの中では、生徒の方々の語彙・文法の間違いをチェックしています。

先週も同様に、普段どおり語彙・文法の間違いをチェックし、直してきました。

ただ先週、生徒の方々の間違いをチェックしている時に気付いたことがありました。
それは、思ったよりも“日本語英語”を使っていることです。

例えば・・・

（服の）トレーナー (trainer) は英語で "sweatshirt"
シャープペンシル (sharp pencil) は英語で "mechanical pencil"
バイキング (viking) は英語で "buffet"
フライドポテト (fried potatoes) は英語(特に北米)で "French fries"
ワイシャツ (Y-shirt) は英語で "dress shirt"
サラリーマン (salary man) は英語で "office worker"
コンセント (consent) は英語で "outlet"

上記の間違いは、自分の生徒の方々にだけでなく、一般的に誤解しているものが多いと思いますので、使う時には気をつけましょう！！

Yesterday, I wrote about "Linking sound", and today I'd like to recommend a training of "how to get accustomed to linking sound with using Friends, a sitcom."

A good method to get used to natural linking sound is... "Listening & Trying to follow!"
1. Watch & Listen carefully
2. Watch & Listen again, but this time, while you are watching, shadow what the characters say
This is as easy as 1 2 3!
Just try it!!

１．まずは注意深く画面を見る・聞く

今日も何件かレッスンの予定があります。
いつもご受講いただき誠にありがとうございます。

本日は“カナダでの確認の表現”についてです。

確認の表現には様々あります。

例えば、文の最後に"right?"をつける方法などがあります。

具体的には、"You are going to the U.S. this summer, right?"
（今年の夏はアメリカに行くんだよね？）というような確認の時に使います。

"right?"は一般的に英語圏でよく使われる表現ですが、

アメリカでは"right?"の代わりに"huh?"を使っているのを耳にします。

一方、カナダではこの"huh?"の使用の代わりに"eh?"がよく使われています。

発音は日本語で書くと“エィ？”となります。

"eh?"を使えば、あなたも今日からCanadian！！

それでは今日の英語での一言："Of course, you're gonna use eh, eh?"

Today, I'm going to see "confirmation expressions."
There are a few countries using English as their native tongue.
However, each country's culture is different and of course their English is slightly different too.
For instance, if we want to confirm a fact or information, we can add "right?" at the end of the sentence.
e.g. "You are going to the U.S. this summer, right?"
I think this "right?" is commonly used all over the world, but I hear Americans say "huh?" instead of "right?" sometimes.
On the other hand, in Canada, people often use "eh?", and even there are T-shirts saying "eh?", which is cool!!
From today, you're gonna use "eh", eh?

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“自分の周りの不思議なカナダ文化”を紹介したいと思います。

ご存知かと思いますが、トロントはカナダ国内では南に位置しています。

が、緯度では日本の北海道オホーツク・網走と同じくらいに位置しますので冬はかなり寒くなります。

冬の間の平均気温は－１０℃～－２０℃で体感気温は－３０℃になることもあるくらい冬は寒くなります。

しかし、自分の周りのカナディアンやカナダに長く住む友達・知り合いはこのような気候でもいつも、“Tシャツ＋ダウンジャケット”というスタイルでした。

理由を聞くと“暑い”とのこと・・・

確かに“外は寒い”のですが、建物の中に一度入ると“決して寒くはない”ので理由はわかるのですが、“Tシャツ”＋“ジャケット”・・・
Hmm...

こんな時のことわざ："When in Rome, do as the Romans do" (郷に入らば郷に従え)


Wonderful weekend!
As you probably know that Toronto is located in the South part of Canada, but the
Latitude is 43°N, which is almost the same as Ohotsuku area in Hokkaido.
Therefore, during the winter time, it's quite cold.
The average temperature in winter is about -10℃ to -20℃ and sometimes we feel -30℃ with cold wind.
However, in this severe winter, to my surprise the Canadians around me or my frineds or acquaintances always wear "T-shirt + jacket."
Their reason is "it's hot."
I understand outside is very cold, and inside building is warm, but why "T-shirt & jacket"???
Hmm...maybe I should follow their customs as a proverb says:
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do"
