English Plus is a small school located in Tamachi, Tokyo.
We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today, let's practice English from English Plus' lessons.
At English Plus, we encourage our students to try to speak English a lot especially during lessons.
Once in a while, they make some mistakes, but they really try hard and try to express what they want to say in their own words. (Great Job!)
Through the lessons at English Plus, I realized there are some mistakes our students often make, so today let's review not to make the same mistake again.
Now, let's find errors from our lessons during the second week of June in 2022 below.

1. I’m scared of dark.

3. I don’t read a book before go to bed.
4. They get along very good.

Good morning and thank you very much for your visit to English Plus blog!
Today, let's learn some English vocabulary which might be able to help you get higher score in the TOEIC exam.
TOEIC exam is one of major English tests in Japan, and there are a lot of people who take the test every time.
Some of our students at English Plus also take the TOEIC exam regularly.
In my opinion, taking some kind of English exam is good to check our English ability objectively, so we recommend our students to try TOEIC or other English exams regularly.
TOEIC test consists of Listening part, 45 min, and Reading part, 75 min.
Therefore, we sometimes hear some of our students, who take the TOEIC test, say "I was tired after taking the test."
To be precise, they said, "I was very tired because some vocabulary was difficult, and it was tough to choose the answer."
Choosing the answer from unknown words is difficult, and in fact, in the TOEIC test there are some questions about which word fits its context.
In order to answer these questions correctly, we need to correctly distinguish "Noun, Verb, Adjective, and so on."
Every time this kind of question appears in the TOEIC test, and today let's learn some "suffix." (Suffix determines noun, verb, adjective, and so on.)
There are a lot of suffixes and today's one is "-en."
The vocabulary with the suffix "-en" is often "verbs." (Actually, there are some adjectives with "-en", such as golden.)
Now, let's think about vocabulary with "-en" verbs.
Please use your brain and imagine as many words with "-en" as possible.
After thinking about for 20 seconds or so, please check the answer below if necessary.

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

本日は“英語講師の冬休みから学ぶ英語表現（カナダ・日本語編）”についてです。

２０１４年～１５年の冬休みは海外出張で久々に北米（バンクーバー・ホノルル・トロント）へ行ってきました。

東京→バンクーバー→ホノルル→トロント→東京を約１０日間という、なかなか忙しい行程の中では、色々なことがありました。

今日は、カナダのコーヒーショップの話と、そこで使える英語表現を学んでいきたいと思います。

カナダも日本と同様にStarbucks等、たくさんのコーヒーショップがありますが、カナダの街を歩いていると一番よく見るコーヒーショップと言えば、それは“Tim Hortons"（ティム・ホートン）だと思います。

Tim Hortonsはそれこそ、カナダの空港内、街中、郊外、家の近所など、あらゆるところで見かけることができるコーヒーショップです。

今回の旅でも、ほとんど毎日と言っていいほどTim Hortonsを利用しましたが、バンクーバー・トロントどこのTim Hortonsへ行っても、６～７年前に飲んだ、以前と変わらないTim Hortonsのコーヒーやドーナツの味で「カナダへ来たなぁ…」と思わせてくれる場所でした。

さて、このTim Hortonsですが自分の欲しい飲み物（やドーナツ等）とそのサイズ・注文数をお願いすれば、商品が注文できます。

基本的にコーヒーは１種類（最近ではDark Roastも追加）なので注文も簡単なのですが、「Mサイズのコーヒーに２杯の砂糖・２杯のミルク」をTim Hortonsで入れてほしい場合、どのように注文すればよいでしょうか？

少し英語で考えてみましょう！

Today, let's learn some English (adjectives) to describe how bright/dark.
During one of our lessons the other day, there was a conversation topic about houses.
Our students were talking about inside, interior, outside, and location of their houses.
Also, there was a story about how bright/dark their houses/rooms were.
There are some English words to describe how bright/dark, and today let's learn some!
For example,
"The place I visited yesterday was..."
・blinding
・radiant
・bright
・well-lit
・dim
・dark
・pitch-dark
Let's try to use some vocabulary to describe some place!

今日は“レッスンから学ぶ様々な“部屋の明るさ＆暗さ”を表現する英語”です。

先日のレッスンの中で、家についての話題がありました。

そのレッスンの中では、家の中（家具・インテリア）や家の外（立地などのロケーション）が話題に上がっていました。

それらの話題の中の１つに家・部屋の“明るさ・暗さ”に関することがありましたが、英語では様々な“明るさ・暗さ”を表現する英語があります。

今日は“明るさ・暗さを表現する時に使える英語”を学んでいきたいと思います。

例えば、"The place I visited yesterday was..."（昨日行った場所は…だった）

・blinding （目がくらむように明るい）

・radiant （まぶしい）

・bright （とても明るい）

・well-lit （明るい）

・dim （薄暗い）

・dark （暗い）

・pitch-dark （真っ暗な）

これらの英語で微妙な明るさ・暗さを表現することができるので、少しずつ使い分けをしてみましょう！

そんな時におすすめなのが、“接頭辞”から学ぶ学習方法です。

接頭辞にはたくさんの種類がありますが、１つ１つ単語を増やしていきましょう！

今日取り上げる接頭辞は“semi-”から始まる英語です。

接頭辞“semi-”は“half（半分）”という意味があり、“semi-”から始まる英語には以下のものがあります、例えば…

・semiannual （半年ごとの）

・semicircle （半円）

・semicolon （セミコロン、句読点）

・semiconductor （半導体）

・semidarkness （薄暗がり）

・semifinal （準決勝）

・semiprofessional （セミプロ）

上記の英語は日常でもよく使う表現だと思います。

このSkill-Upのレッスンでは、英語コミュニケーションに必要な基本的な英語の文法・語彙を学んでいきます。

様々な文法・語彙を学んでいくSkill-Upコースですが、レッスンの中に“形容詞”を学び、使っていくレッスンもあります。

Today, I’d like to recommend a good drama movie to learn English!

The movie I’m going to introduce is entitled “About Schmidt.”
“About Schmidt” is an American dram film in 2002.
In Japanese, it’s known as “
When I first started watching this movie, my first impression was that wow, what a very dark-comedy it is.
However, the story went on, and it turned out that the story of this movie is not only dark , but also interesting.
I mean there is something important we can learn from this movie.
Another good point of this movie is that the main actor’s action, Jack Nicholson as Warren Schmidt, is brilliant.
From English learning point of view, listening is relatively easy, so even beginner English learners can enjoy it with a subtitle!

本日おすすめの映画は“About Schmidt”です。

“About Schmidt”はアメリカの２００２年制作のドラマ映画です。

物語は見てからのお楽しみということで、あまり触れませんが、個人的な印象としましては、この映画の見始めは、つまり最初の印象は“随分とダークな部分を持つ映画だな”という印象を持ちました。

が、しかし物語が進むにつれ、この映画のストーリーはダークな部分だけでなく、しっかりと興味深いヒューマンドラマ作品に仕上がっています。

“興味深い”という点に限ると、この映画から何か大切なことが学べると思います。

他の良い点としましては、主人公Warren Schmidtを演じるJack Nicholsonの演技が、“さすがベテラン”だと言える点です。

映画としてしっかり楽しめる一本ですが、英語学習の観点から見ますと、リスニングも比較的容易で、英語初級者の方も英語音声・日本語字幕で楽しめると思います。
