English Plus is a small school located in Tamachi, Tokyo.
We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today, let's practice some English phrases for English only week at English Plus.
At English Plus, we hold "English Only Week" every once a month.
During this week, all of our students must speak only English during lessons.
The next term is from next Tuesday to Saturday, January 28th - February 1st.
If they speak Japanese, there is a penalty waiting for them.
So, today I'd like to introduce some English phrases that might be useful during English Only Week.
For instance...
・質問してもいいですか？ ＝ Can I ask you a question?
・ちょっと待って ＝ Wait a minute. / Hold on.
Let's try only English next week!

Good morning and thank you very much for checking out English Plus blog!
Today, I'd like to write about one of some tips for those who would like to gain confidence in English conversation and their English ability.
As I wrote in this previous blog, when we start learning something new, all of us are beginners.
Although I studied English in junior high and high schools, I was a false-beginner when I first went to Canada to study English.
After finishing learning English, I became an English teacher in Japan, but I had a lot of hard time while learning English.
The first difficulty I faced was that I felt English was very difficult.
There were some reasons why English was difficult, and I clearly remember that the first three or four months were very tough for me.
From my personal learning experience, I'd like to share another tip about gaining confidence in English conversation and ability.
The third advice is "When you can't catch what a speaker says, ask him/her to repeat it."
During communication, no matter which it's in Japanese or in English, we sometimes don't understand or miss what a speaker says.
In this case, we should always ask a question, such as "Could you repeat that?"
This question is very important when we communicate in English, and it depends on how to ask this question, it can also mean to clarify what a speaker wants to say.
So, when you don't understand English, ask a question for repeating.
At English Plus, our lessons are basically in English, and these questions for repeating are often used during lessons.

Today, let's learn some English phrases that can be used in business.
In our daily business situations, there is a situation like this - we want to ask a question to someone while the person is busy.
In this situation, the following phrases might be useful.
The phrases are about "how to interrupt someone politely when he/she is busy."
For example...
・Excuse me, may I have a word with you?
・Excuse me, may I speak to you for a second?
・I'm sorry to interrupt, but may I speak you briefly?
・Sorry to bother you, but can I have a minute to talk with you?
You might need to use the phrases above in the future, so let's learn from now!

本日は“ビジネスの場における - ちょっとよろしいでしょうか？の英語表現”です。

日常のビジネスの状況において、話したい相手が忙しそう…けれども今、相談したいことや話したいことがある、という状況があると思います。

今日はこのような状況において使える“ちょっとよろしいでしょうか？”の英語表現を学んでいきたいと思います。

例えば…

・Excuse me, may I have a word with you?

・Excuse me, may I speak to you for a second?

・I'm sorry to interrupt, but may I speak you briefly?

・Sorry to bother you, but can I have a minute to talk with you?

上記の表現は“すみませんが、ちょっとよろしいでしょうか？”というような意味になります。

必要に応じて使えるように１つでも、今から学んで口にだして練習しておきましょう！

Today's topic is "my study abroad experience - how to enjoy severe cold winter in Toronto!"

When I ask a question about the image of Canada, I hear almost everyone say "cold."
Well, that's true in a way.
(FYI: Even though Toronto is located in the most southern part of Canada, it's as cold as Hokkaido.)
However, there are a lot of ways to enjoy "cold winter in Toronto, Canada!"
One of the most popular winter activities is "ice skating!"
In Toronto, there are some outdoor ice skating places, such as in front of the City Hall and Harbourfront Center, which is next to Lake Ontario.
The admission fee is free of charge, so if you have ice skates, basically you can enjoy ice skating anytime for free!!
If you don't have ice skates, don't worry!!
There is a place for you to get ice skates nearby.
Ice skating is of course, good exerce and also a great spot for a fun date!!
If you have a chance to visit Toronto in winter, try ice skating!!

友達や周りの人に“カナダのイメージは？”と聞くと、大抵“寒そう”という答えが返ってきます。
トロントはカナダで一番南に位置していますが、それでも北海道並に寒いです。

そんな寒い冬があるトロント（カナダ）ですが、厳しい冬を楽しむ方法がたくさんあります！！

その一つが“アイススケート”です。

トロントには、入場料無料の屋外のアイススケート場が街中にあり、スケート靴を持っていれば何時間滑っても無料という場所が幾つかあります。
*上記の写真はHarbourfront Centerというオンタリオ湖に面した屋外スケート場です。

スケート靴を持っていなくても、スケート場の側には貸しスケートの場所があり、スケート靴を借りることもできますので“誰でもスケートを楽しむ”ことができます。

アイススケートは“すごく良い運動”＋“デートにおすすめの場所”なので、チャンスがあれば、トロントで是非！！
