Sting - Soul Cake
Soul Cake （ｿｳﾙｹｰｷ/ｿｳﾙﾏｽｹｰｷとも呼ばれる）は、ｷﾘｽﾄ教の伝統の死者を記念する日､ｿｳﾙｽﾞﾃﾞｲ(ﾊﾛｳｨｰﾝ〈10/31〉､諸聖人の日〈11/1〉､全魂の日〈11/2〉)のために伝統的に作られた小さな丸いｹｰｷです。それは祈りを唱えｿｳﾙｽﾞﾃﾞｲの日々の間にﾄﾞｱからﾄﾞｱへと行くｿｳﾙﾗｰ（主に子供と貧しい人々から成る）に配れます。 英国とｱｲﾙﾗﾝﾄﾞでは、子供たちが十字架のあるﾀﾍﾟｽtﾘｰを求めて戸別訪問（ｿｳﾙﾘﾝｸﾞ）に行くのが慣習でした。英国では中世時代にまでさかのぼり、1930年代までﾌﾟﾛﾃｽﾀﾝﾄとｶﾄﾘｯｸの両方のｷﾘｽﾄ教徒によってそこで続けられました。そして､子供たちがｿｳﾙｽﾞﾃﾞｲにおやつを貰うときに歌う歌が「Soul Cake (A souling/A Soalin'」です。

「Coal Tattoo(石炭の入れ墨)」は、米国の鉱山労働者のきびしい生活の困難を歌ったものです。この「入れ墨」は、黒人肺疾患の鉱夫にもたらされる中型および大型動脈の内腔に向かって成長する斑状の内膜､一種のｱﾃﾛｰﾑ性動脈硬化症と言われています。 彼らの露出した､または切断された皮膚の下に染み込んだ石炭粉の跡は時には大きく、時には小さく長時間労働の炭鉱夫の手、腕、首に見られます。なお､歌詞の中にある「Buckeye」はｾｲﾖｳﾄﾁﾉｷ、「Sycamore」はｾｲﾖｳｶｼﾞｶｴﾃﾞのことで

「the U. M. W. of A」は.United Mine Workers of Americaで、炭鉱労働者を代表することで最もよく知られている北米の労働組合です。
