Greenfields

1957年The Brothers Fourが結成され、そのセカンドシングルが代表曲となった Greenfields （グリーンフィールズ）でした。もちろん、我々のレパートリーとなっていますが、あまりにも有名すぎて、ステージ演奏したことはほとんどありません。
1960年4月のビルボード誌第2位のヒット、その年に発売された彼らの最初のアルバム、”The Brothers Four”にリリースされ、アルバム部門のトップ20となり一躍、スターダムに押し上げた最初のヒット曲です。今年、久しぶりに来日するそうですがグループ結成50年以来、ずーと歌い続けている曲ですね。
カバーもブラフォーの代表曲であるためか余りありませんね。
1960年にイギリスの女性トリオThe Beverley Sisters 1962年にはFour Fresh Men がアルバム”Stars In Our Eyes”に挿入、1969にはボーカルグループのThe Vogues が歌っています。

Sinner Man

The Travelers 3

Sinner Manは1962年にリリースされたThe Travelers 3 のファーストアルバム”The Travelers 3”に挿入されています。Sinner Manとは刑法上の罪人ではなく人間の「原罪」を指すものです。歌は20世紀初頭アメリカの伝統的なspiritual songです。そもそも、1959年、The Weavversが取り上げ、世間に広めました。また、この歌はGordon Lightfoot がソロデビューする前にTerry Whelan と1962年The Two Tonesと言うデュオを組み、アルバム”At the Village Corner”のなかでも挿入されています。

特に1965年Nina Simoneがリリースしたアルバム”Pastel Blues”のものが有名です。
