昨日の朝からテレビをつけると、島田紳助さんのニュースがでもちきりです。

こういうとき、英語ではどう表現しているかをみると興味深いです。

まず、The Asahi Shimbun では、

Popular television personality Shinsuke Shimada said he will leave the entertainment world to take responsibility for his close relations with a gangster who helped him out of "troble" years ago.

次に、DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE では

Popular TV personality Shinsuke Shimada on Tuesday night announced his retirement from the entertainment business, effective immediately, due to his relatationship with a member of an organized crime group.

そして、The Mainichi Daily News では

Shinsuke Shimada, a popular TV personality and comedian, suddenly announced his retirement from entertainment industry on Aug.23 over his close links to a member of an organized crime syndicate.

 

紳介さんのことは、

popular TV persomality （人気芸能人）と共通していますね。

（Mainichi はcomedian もありますが）

引退することを、

leave （去る）と表現したのが Asahi

あとの２つは、announced his retirement （引退を表明した）です。

芸能界は、

entertainment world （Asahi）

entertainment business （Yomiuri）

entertainment industry (Mainichi）

暴力団員のことは、

gangster （Asahi）　gang （暴力団）　-ster （・・・に関係のある人）が組み合わさった言葉です。

member of an organized crime group （Yomiuri）

member of an organized crime syndicate (Mainichi）

organaized （組織された）　crime （犯罪）　group （集団）　syndicate （連合）

日本語同様、言い方は一つではありませんね。

ハリー・ポッターからの英語

ハリー・ポッターと死の秘宝Part2、感動しました。

ロンが

「Wicked！」

と言う場面があります。

字幕は

「すごい！」だったと思います。

劇団四季のミュージカルにも「Wicked」があります。

もともとは、「よこしまな、邪悪な」という意味です。

「a wicked stepmother」は

「意地悪なまま母」という意味です。

でも最近は、

「うまい、素晴らしい、すごい」という意味にも使います。

四季のミュージカルでも両方に使われています。

 

もともと悪い意味が、いい意味にも使われるようになったものには、他に

「Bad」があります。

「That's a bad car.」が

「悪い車」ではなく、「かっこいい車」という意味にもなります。

マイケルジャクソンの

「I'm bad」も歌詞の中で両方の意味が織り込まれています。

 

日本語でも

「やばい」が最近は、「すごくいい」意味に使われはじめましたね。
