2月末だったというのに、とても温暖なマルセイユだった。ノートルダム・ド・ラ・ギャルド・バジリカ聖堂からの眺望がともかく素晴らしかった。どこまでも広がっていくマルセイユの青い空が生涯忘れられないものとなった。

 

翌日、僕らはイフ島～フリウル島を訪れてみた。その後、マルセイユ市内を散策したのだった。

Until the 16th century, If is an uninhabited island and the occasional haven of fishermen. It is François I, who, during a visit to Marseille in 1516, assesses its strategic importance and gives the order to build a fortress on it. 

　*uninhabited island:無人島　　　　occasional haven ：臨時港/避難港　　　*fortress:要塞

In a very short time, the fortress changes its purpose and becomes a prison. Rebels, ruffians and refractory galley slaves stayed there for more or less long periods.

　*Rebels（謀反者）, ruffians（ごろつき） refractory（手におえない）　galley slaves（ガレー船に乗せられた奴隷）

From 1689 onwards, the Protestants are thrown en masse into the unhealthy dungeons where many of them die. However, the fortress offers quite decent living conditions to distinguished prisoners.

　*en masse：フランス語・・ひとまとめに　　*distinguished：優れた　

The most famous prisoner was without José Custodio Faria, whom Alexandre Dumas immortalized in the Count of Monte Cristo. After having received the revels of 1848 and the communards of 1871, the fortress lost its prison character and was opened to the public in 1890.

As regards Edmond Dantès, the Count of Monte Christo, the chronicle of If has no trace of his imprisonment. On the other hand, the hole which he dug in the wall of one of the cells is still very visible.

The Château d'If can be visited thanks to a regular boat service and welcomes every year more than 90000 visitors.

イフ島を観光するには「モンテクリスト伯」を読んでいれば一層楽しくなる。ただし、上記説明にもあるが、当然ながらダンテスの投獄のトレースは何もない。映画「モンテクリスト伯」のビデオが四六時中流されていたのが面白かった。

　　　　　　　

イフ島は上記referenceに書いてあるような歴史を携えた狭い島だった。観光客は３０名程度だっただろうか。上陸すると、インターナショナルスクールの課外授業をしていた。２０名ぐらいの生徒と先生２人。日本人の女の子も１人、僕らを注視していた。何か話したそうだった。

フランスの観光地や美術館はフランス語の表示ばかりだ。イフ島も同様だった。せめて英語での解説があれば理解が深まるのに、、、、やはりフランス語を習得しないといけないなぁ。と思いつつ、いつまでも初級者の段階から抜け出せれない。

 　　　

フリウル島でランチを摂った。妻は映画「アデュー・フィリピーヌ」を想い出したそうだ。青い空、美しい海、、確かに、似ているなぁ。「アデュー・フィリピーヌ」という映画は、ジャック・ロジエ監督が手掛けた、ヌーベル・バーグの代表作で、トリュフォーが絶賛したという青春映画だ。以前、感想を書いた。（⇒フランス映画）

 

僕らの宿泊先の目の前がイフ島へのフェリー乗り場（≒a regular boat service）だった。2月だったので、観光客よりもフリウル島の住民が多かった。皆が顔なじみらしく、彼らの表情を見ているのが楽しかった。 フリウリ島から帰還してから、僕らはロンシャン宮を目指したのである。ところが、、、、（続く）
