the ticket

Kazuo Ishiguroの短編小説集、Nocturnes、三番目の作品はMALVERN HILLSです。Ishiguro作品には丘、追憶、音楽が必ずと言って良いほど出てきます。最初は気が付かなかったのですが、この短編集Nocturnesにはサブタイトルがあって、Five Stories of Music and Nightfallとありました。どうりで音楽家がよく顔をだす話が多いと思いました。MALVERN HILLSの話は音楽家の主人公がやはり一時的にMALVERN HILLSの姉夫婦が経営しているカフェに滞在した時の話です。スイスから来たカフェの客夫婦との会話の個所を引用します。
'I wonder, Is there by any chance a small hotel you can recommend for us nearby? Nothing too expensive, but comfortable and pleasant. And if possible, with something of the English flavour!'
Maggie was a bit stumped by this and delayed her answer by saying something meaningless like: 'What sort of place did you want?' But I said quickly:
'The Malvern Lodge! That sounds just the ticket!'
Maggieは主人公の姉です。　主人公が "That sounds just the ticket!" と言っていますが、この " the ticket" の意味は何でしょう？

COME RAIN OR COME SHINEで出張中のCharlieからまた留守番をしている主人公に電話がありました。
Charlie, I think you're upset because you don't like your hotel. But you should pull yourself together. Get things in perspective. And take heart. I'm on top of things here. I'll sort out the dog business, then I'll play my part up to the hilt for you.
"dog business" と言うのはCharlieが主人公に教えた犬の匂いを作る作業の事ですが、その後にある "play my part up to the hilt for you" は、やはりCharlieが主人公に頼んだ留守中のEmilyとの接し方についての話です。 Charlieは危機状態にあるEmilyとの結婚生活をなんとか元にしたいと考え、その為にCharlieを泊めることにしたのでした。 "to the hilt" は慣用句だと思いますが意味が分からないので調べます。

先日の日曜日に録画しておいたラグビーのトップリーグ決勝戦を昨夜やっと見る事ができました。やはりサントリーが強かったですね。相手はパナソニックで、ラグビーではパナソニックが強かった事がなかったのでよく決勝まで出てきたなと思ったら、ラグビーでは強かったサンヨーがパナソニック傘下になったので、元サンヨーの選手で構成されているパナソニックでした。
どのアマチュアスポーツも同じですが、スポンサーなしで一流になるのは至難の業です。先日の東京マラソンで良い結果が出なかったとは言え、埼玉県の公務員の川内選手はすごい。拍手をします。
