The Battle of Edessa took place between the armies of the Roman Empire under the command of Emperor Valerian and Sassanid forces under King of the Kings Shapur I in 260.
The Roman army was defeated and captured in its entirety by the Persian forces and for the first time in Rome's military history against a foreign enemy their emperor was taken prisoner.

260年、ササン朝ペルシア2代の王、シャープール1世はローマの軍人皇帝ヴァレリアヌスをエデッサで破って捕ら、対ローマ戦で優位を占めた。以後ローマ世界は僭称皇帝の乱立・領土の分裂などでその混迷を一層深めてゆくこととなる。
