Japanese Tea Demonstration and Seminar
Dear Members:
On Thursday, July 14, 2011, a Japanese Tea Demonstration about new ways to
serve
and prepare Japanese Green Tea was hosted by the Shizuoka Prefectural
Government
and the Consulate General of Japan in New York, and other local Japanese
organizations.
The event was held at the Nippon Club located on 57th Street in New York
City.
The basic objective of the session was to allay concerns about the safety of
consuming
Japanese tea while highlighting the unique flavor and versatility of Green
Tea from
Japan. The event was attended by well over 100 people and many members of
the media.
The session started with a private luncheon attended by Joe Simrany,
president of
the Tea Association of the USA, Pearl Dexter, owner and publisher of Tea A
Magazine,
Governor, Dr. Heita Kawakatsu of Shizuoka Prefecture, Ambassador Shigeyuki
Hiroki,
Consul General of Japan in New York, and several other members of the
Shizuoka government.
The luncheon was an excellent opportunity to share thoughts on the safety of
Japanese
tea, tea trends in the USA and ways in which Japan could increase their
share of
market of tea consumed in America.
Following the luncheon, The Governor and Ambassador opened the public
sessions by
welcoming the attendees and summarizing the research conducted by the
Shizuoka government
and the Japan Department of Health & Welfare to ascertain the safety of tea
exported
from Japan.
Following their review of the ongoing analysis and testing of teas in Japan,
the
session was turned over to Pearl Dexter and Ako Yoshino, an instructor of
Japanese
tea ceremonies who took the group through a series of preparation
techniques, tea
tastings and contests. All told, it was a good session and we thank the
Shizuoka
government for their hard work in organizing the session for us.
