English Plus is a small school located in Tamachi, Tokyo.
We're providing fun, student-centered, practical English lessons.


Today I'd like to write about our kids lesson at English Plus.
English Plus is mainly an English school for adults. However, thanks to some requests, we started a new course for kids last autumn.
The new course is "Phonics + Basic English skills for kids", and it's for over 9 years old (more than elementary school grade 3).
The purpose of this kids course is that "we would like our students to master some basic English skills which can be useful and practical when they become adults."
In order to get our students to master some basic English skills, we offer some fun English lessons.
One of them is "phonics lessons."
Through the phonics lessons, our students learn some basic vocabulary, and can pronounce the words correctly and read English sentences naturally.
Mastering phonics could be very beneficial since it'll be possible to read out loud the vocabulary that they see for the first time, and they can increase vocabulary a little more easily, and phonics can be useful when they learn grammar.
The other is "basic English lessons."
After mastering basic phonics patterns, our students try to read books.
Through reading books together, we teach vocabulary, grammar, how to read and comprehend English.
The final goal we're hoping for our students is that we'd like our students to make original English sentences by themselves, and they can communicate smoothly in the future.
In the lesson, our students learn a lot of vocabulary, and today let's learn some basic vocabulary about "musical instruments."
1. triangle（トライアングル）
2. violin（バイオリン）
3. castanets（カスタネット）
4. xylophone（木琴）
5. cymbals（シンバル）
The first step for kids to master English is to read the vocabulary out loud correctly when they see the alphabet.
After they can pronounce the vocabulary correctly, let's use the vocabulary in a sentence, such as "Can you play the...?"（…を演奏できますか？）"Yes, I can. / No, I can't."（はい、できます。 / いいえ、できません）
In our lessons, our students enjoy learning and using English since our kids instructor is Haruka, who has had over a decade career as an English instructor, and not only the career but her character is cheerful.
I'm sure kids will enjoy learning English with her.
Currently our kids lessons are on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The maximum number of the students in each lesson is 4. Therefore, when we have 4 students in a class, we'll stop accepting new students without notice.

Today, let's learn some English vocabulary from English Plus' lessons.
During English Plus' lessons, our students have a chance to talk about a wide variety of topics.
In the lesson, they talk about a topic, and the topics change frequently and naturally.
For instance, when they talk about cooking, the topic of cooking changes to ingredients, a recipe, a favorite grocery store, some items they saw in a supermarket, and so on.
To continue conversation naturally and freely, in addition to basic English knowledge of grammar, it's necessary to know about vocabulary.
Knowledge of vocabulary often helps us to communicate.
During one of our recent English lessons, our students talked about "alcohol" since this is the season to see cherry blossoms and we have some opportunities to drink alcohol while looking at cherry blossoms.
Actually, alcohol has a lot of kinds, and today let's learn English vocabulary about alcohol especially "popular cocktails in Japan."
Now, let's check the vocabulary below.
1. スクリュー・ドライバー ＝ screwdriver
2. カシスウーロン ＝ cassis and oolong tea
3. カルーアミルク ＝ kahlua and milk
4. ジンライム ＝ gin and lime
5. ジントニック ＝ gin and tonic
To master vocabulary, you can either of the techniques below.
・Read out loud
・Write
・Check the spelling carefully
If you want to know more about alcohol, you should google and find the information in English.
In this case, you can learn about alcohol and read English.
You might use the vocabulary above during conversation sometime in the future, so let's get prepared for such an opportunity from now.

During one of this year's English lessons, our students talked about "alcohol" since we have had some opportunities to drink alcohol in end-of-year parties, new-year parties, and so on.
Actually, alcohol has a lot of kinds, and today let's learn English vocabulary about alcohol especially "Japanese and Chinese alcohol."
Now, let's check the vocabulary below.
1. 日本酒 ＝ sake
2. 焼酎 ＝ shochu (Japanese distilled beverage)
3. 泡盛 ＝ awamori (Okinawan distilled beverage)
4. 梅酒 ＝ plum wine
5. 紹興酒 ＝ Shaoxing wine
To master vocabulary, you can either of the techniques below.
・Read out loud
・Write
・Check the spelling carefully
If you want to know more about alcohol, you should google and find the information in English.
In this case, you can learn about alcohol and read English.

Today, I'd like to introduce one of English Plus' lesson programs.
At English Plus, there are several English lessons available for adults, and in addition to these, we have an English course for kids.
The course is "Phonics + Basic English skills", and this is currently for over 9 years old (more than elementary school grade 3).
The main purpose of this course is that "we would like our kids students to master some basic English skills which can be used when they become adults."
For instance, through the lessons, our students learn some basic vocabulary, and can correctly pronounce the words they've learned.
Also, they can read English sentences naturally.
The final goal through this course is that we'd like our students to make original English sentences by themselves, and they can communicate smoothly when they get older.
The contents of the lessons are "Phonics" and "Basic English skills (Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading)."
Mastering phonics can be very beneficial since it'll be possible to read out loud the vocabulary that they see for the first time, and they can increase vocabulary a little more easily.
Also, phonics can help them learn grammar.
A very reliable and experienced instructor, whose name is Haruka, is in charge of our kids lessons.
From my point of view, her career about teaching kids is great, and her personality is cheerful so I'm sure kids will enjoy learning English with her.
Currently, our kids lessons start at 18:00 and 19:10 on Tuesdays, and at 17:00 and 18:10 on Fridays.

In our lessons, our students enjoy learning and using English since our kids instructor is Haruka, who has had over a decade career as an English instructor, and not only the career but her character is cheerful.
I'm sure kids will enjoy learning English with her.
Currently our kids lessons are on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The maximum number of the students in each lesson is 4. Therefore, when we have 4 students in a class, we'll stop accepting new students without notice.

Good morning and thank you so much for taking time to read English Plus blog!
Today, I'd like to write about our kids lesson at English Plus.
English Plus is mainly an English school for adults. However, thanks to some requests, we started a new course for kids last autumn.
The new course is "Phonics + Basic English skills for kids", and it's for over 9 years old (more than elementary school grade 3).
The purpose of this kids course is that "we would like our students to master some basic English skills which can be useful and practical when they become adults."
In order to get our students to master some basic English skills, we offer some fun English lessons.
One of them is "Phonics lessons."
Through the phonics lessons, our students learn some basic vocabulary, and can pronounce the words correctly and read English sentences naturally.
Mastering phonics could be very beneficial since it'll be possible to read out loud the vocabulary that they see for the first time, and they can increase vocabulary a little more easily, and phonics can be useful when they learn grammar.
The other is "Basic English lessons."
After mastering basic phonics patterns, our students try to read books.
Through reading books together, we teach vocabulary, grammar, how to read and comprehend English.
The final goal we're hoping for our students is that we'd like our students to make original English sentences by themselves, and they can communicate smoothly in the future.
In the lesson, our students learn a lot of vocabulary, and today let's learn some basic vocabulary about "job."
The vocabulary listed today is popular among elementary school kids.
1. doctor（医師）
2. nurse（看護師）
3. nursery school teacher（保育士）
4. pastry chef（パティシエ）
5. soccer player（サッカー選手）
The first step for kids to master English is to read the vocabulary out loud correctly when they see the alphabet.
After they can pronounce the vocabulary correctly, let's use the vocabulary in a sentence, such as "What do you want to be in the future?"（将来何になりたいですか？）"I want to be a..."（…になりたいです）
