The other day after a lesson, our students were talking about their pets.
According to their talk, they have a lot of pets such as cats, dogs, fish, and some interesting insects that I have never heard before.
The students said each pet's character is different.
So, today let's learn some adjectives to describe pet's nature.
For example, "My cat is..."
・gentle
・tame
・quiet
・tranquil
・rowdy
・unruly
・wild
・vicious
In your daily or business conversation, you might have a chance to talk about pets, so let's learn some adjectives now!

本日は“ペットの気性“穏やか～激しい”を表現する時に使える英語”についてです。

先日、レッスン終了後に、生徒の方々がペットについての話をしていました。

少しお話をお聞きしたところ、生徒の方々は色々なペットを飼われているらしく、猫や犬、魚、自分が今まで名前も聞いたことがない虫など飼われている方もいらっしゃるということでした。

また、猫を何匹か飼われている生徒の方は“同じ種類でも一匹・一匹ペットの気性は違う”というような話もしていました。

そんな今日は“ペットの気性～穏やか・激しい”を表現する時に使える英語を学んでいきたいと思います。

例えば…

・gentle （優しい）

・tame （従順な）

・quiet （穏やかな）

・rowdy （暴れん坊な）

Today, I'd like to share a story of my experience in Canada.
In Tamachi, it's raining right now and it's getting colder day by day.
Speaking of rain, I'll tell you a surprising fact in Canada.
When you walk on the street in Canada in the rain, you might notice that...
People in Canada don't usually take their umbrellas with them when it rains!
At first I thought just very few people had umbrellas with them, however, it turned out not a few, but most people don't carry umbrellas with them.
In my case, when I was living in Toronto, I carried my fold-up umbrella with me almost all the time.
However, a few months after arrival, I no longer tried to carry it because nobody around me didn't carry them.
It's different from Japanese, isn't it?

本日は久々の“英語講師の留学経験 - 雨の時の話”です。

今日の田町は雨が降っており、季節も少しずつ寒くなっているのを実感しています。

雨に関して言えば、カナダで驚いたことがありました。

雨の時にカナダの街を歩くと、すぐに気づくと思うことだと思います。

それは・・・

“カナダの人は雨が降っていても、あまり傘を持ち歩かない”ということです。

最初、傘を持たない人は少数だと思っていたのですが、実際は傘を持っている人のほうが少数だということに気づきました。

自分もカナダ・トロントに住み始めた最初の時は、折りたたみの傘を持って歩いていましたが、周囲の人が持っていない事実もあり、結局持たなくなりました。

カナダに住んでいろいろと文化の違いを感じましたが、この雨の件はカナダで身近な違いを感じられる経験でした。

Today, I’d like to introduce some vocabulary which is useful at a restaurant in a foreign country.

When I was in Toronto, Canada, I visited quite a lot of restaurants.
However, I still remember that it was a pretty difficult task from ordering food to leaving tip for the first time　in 2003.
It’s because there were some unknown vocabulary on the menu, and also I didn’t know what to say in a particular situation at a restaurant.
So, today, I’d like to pick up some vocabulary used at a restaurant in a foreign country.
For example,
・appetizer
・entrée (main dish)
・leftovers
・second helping
・all-you-can-eat buffet (not viking)
・gratuity
・refill
・combo
Hopefully, these words will help you somehow in the future!

カナダ・トロントに滞在していた時、たくさんのレストランに行くことがありました。

今でも覚えているますが、２００３年に留学し始めた当初のレストランでのやりとり（食事の注文～チップの支払いまで）は、とても難しく感じられました。

難しく感じられたのは、英語力がほとんど無かったため“メニューの単語が理解できない＋何と言っていいのかわからない”というのが主な理由でした。

今日はこのような状況の時に役に立つ、レストランのメニューや関連する英単語を取り上げてみたいと思います。

例えば・・・

・appetizer（前菜）

・entrée (主采)

・leftovers（食べ残し）

・doggy bag（持ち帰り用のバッグ）

・second helping（おかわり）

・all-you-can-eat buffet (日本語で言うバイキング、vikingは誤り)

・gratuity（=tip チップ）

・free-refill（フリードリンク）

・combo（セットメニュー）

おはようございます。英語講師のarataです。

ちょうど先週の日曜日は第１５７回TOEIC公開テストの日でした。
自分の生徒の何人かも受験されたようなので、今から結果を聞くのが楽しみです！！

さて、本日はそのTOEICテストに関する“日常生活の中のTOEICテスト用トレーニング”についてです。

TOEICは2つのリスニング(part1～4で合計495点満点)とリーディング(part5～7合計495点満点)のセクションから成り立っている（合計990点満点の）テストです。

リスニングは４５分、その後、リーディング７５分という休憩なしの2時間のテストになっております。

リスニングPart１（写真描写・１０問）は写真を見ながら、４つの英文を聞き、写真に合った正しい文を選ぶというものです。

この写真描写に関しましては日常生活の中でのトレーニングが可能です！！

トレーニングの方法として・・・

“周りの状況を英語にすること”です。

例えば、男性が歩いているのを見た場合は・・・

"A man is walking."

もう少し詳しくこの男性を描写する場合は・・・

"A man is walking towards me."（方向を付け加える）
"A young man with a dog is walking towards me."（人を描写する）
"A young man with a dog is walking happily towards me."（状態を付け加える）

以上のように少し難易度を上げることも可能です。

このトレーニングを続けますと、英語脳が作られてきますのでTOEICだけでなく、Speaking（話す）やWriting（書く）ということにもとても有効です！！

まずは今の状況を簡単な英文で良いので表現してみましょう！！

例えばこんな感じで！！："I'm checking out a blog."

Good morning!
Last Sunday, it was the 157th official TOEIC test day.
I guess some of my students took it, and I'm looking forward to hearing their scores soon!
As for TOEIC, this time I'd like to talk about "training for TOEIC test through daily life!!"
The TOEIC test consists of 2 parts - Listening (Part 1-4) & Reading (Part 5-7) and Listening is about 45 min, on the other hand, Reading is about 75 min.
There is no break between Listening and Reading, so you have to concentrate on English for 2 hours in a row.
The Part 1 is composed of 10 questions and you have to choose a correct statement that matches the photo after listening to four statements.
About this Part 1 questions, you can do the training through daily life.
How-to-do is easy because you just need to "describe a scene around you."
For instance, if you see a man walking, you can make a statement as follows:
"A man is walking."
If you want to describe more, you can add more information:
"A man is walking towards me."
"A young man with a dog is walking towards me"
"A young man with a dog is walking happily towards me."
This training will help you to improve not only your TOEIC score, but also your Speaking & Writing skills.
Now is the time to get started!!
You can describe your current situation like this "I'm checking out a blog."
