The story of us『E=mc²』私たちの物語『相対性理論』

この絵のタイトルはE=mc²である。

Portrait the title of this painting is E=mc².

画家のしてんてん様（北籔和）から、

絵のタイトルは何にしますかと尋ねられた時、

迷いなくE=mc²にすることを伝えた。

When the painter, Mr. Kitayabu-waa asked me

what the title of this painting should be,

I told him “E=mc²”

without any of hesitations.

何故なら、この相対性理論が

私（Keiren）と夫（Eric Applebaum）の出会いを

導いてくれたからである。

Because this theory of relativity

led me (Keiren) to meet my husband (Eric Applebaum).

私が初めてアインシュタインを知ったのは14才の時であった。

I first learned about Einstein

when I was 14 years old.

カール・セーガンのコスモスのという本の

第一章に登場していたのだが、

同時は相対性理論が全く理解できなかった。

Einstein’s equation appeared

in the first chapter of the book『Cosmos』

by Carl Sagan,

but at that time

I was not able to understand it all.

私は何かが分からず納得できないと苦しむタイプなので、

それからずっと図書館を転々しながら

相対性理論について調べてきた。

Since I am the type of person

who suffers if there is something incomprehensible to me,

I was studying the theory of relativity at many libraries.

40代になってグーグル検索が一般化してからは

ほぼ毎日、相対性関連の物理学や宇宙学の記事を探して読んだり、

ユーチューブで観たりした。

In my forties, Google searching engine became general tool

so almost every day

I looked up articles related to relativity theory

in the realm of physics or cosmology

and often watched on YouTube.

ただ、私はアインシュタインが視た

時空間のイメージを捉えたかった。

I wanted to catch the imagination of space-time that

Einstein would have viewed.

相対性理論と宇宙の相関性の全体図を見たかった。

I just wanted to see the whole picture of the correlation

between the theory of relativity and the universe

we should know.

毎日新しい知識を求めて読むのが日常だったから

相対性理論がまともに分かっていないのにも関わらず、

大概の既存の知識に見飽きてしまった。

Such seeking new knowledge and

reading articles every day became my daily habit,

so began to run out of new information,

although I could not understand properly the theory of relativity.

その時にふっと、

他の人はどう考えているのかに好奇心が湧いた。

Suddenly, a curiosity hit my mind

how other people think about such knowledge.

他の人は何か私と異なる見方をしているのかも知れないと思い至って、

宇宙の歴史や物理理論に関する記事に

寄せられた人のなんか面白いコメントを探し始めた。

I came up to think that

other people might have a different view from me,

and I started to look for interesting comments

among articles on the history of universe and physics theories.

その中で『ExtremeTech』という科学サイトがあって、

ペンローズのサイクル宇宙（Penrose's cyclic universe）

に関する記事のコメント欄を読んだ時、

あるコメンテーターの話の構成力が魅力的に目立ってきた。

Among them, there was a science site called 『ExtremeTech』

when I read the comment section of the article about

Penrose’s cyclic universe,

a commentator’s writing composition stood out attractively.

その魅力的だったコメンテーターが

今の夫であるエリック・アップルバウムであったのである。

The attractive commentator was the one

who is now my husband Eric Applebaum.

私達の出会いの始まりを遡ると、

宇宙がどう始まったかついて分かろうとした好奇心に辿る着く。

When I trace back to the beginning of our encounter,

I reach to the curiosity that tried to know

how the universe began.

宇宙を理解するには、

アインシュタインの相対性理論も合わせて知る必要がある。

To understand the universe,

there will be a necessary of Einstein’s relativity theory

to get through it.

そのような必要性に応じて、

分かるための過程を着実に踏んだことで、

結果的には理想の夫に出会うことができた。

By steadily stepping up the process to understand,

followed up such requiring needs,

I was able to meet my ideal husband as the result.

私達の出会いの根源に

E=mc²があるわけである。

That is how our encounter

fundamentally has E=mc²

この絵は私達が宝石店で、

注文した婚約指輪を受け取った時に

店の店長が撮ってくれた写真をモデルにして、

画家の『のしてんてん（北籔和）』が

肖像画に描いてくれた作品である。

This painting of portrait is drawn by Kitayabu-Waa

who is an artist known as Noshitenten.

He drew this painting with our photo as the model

which was taken at the jewelry store

where we ordered my engagement ring

and the store manager took the photo on the day

when I received my ring.  

この絵を描いてくれたのしてんてん画家に出会った根源を辿っても、

宇宙の根源について知ろうとした好奇心が基になって、

それが彼との縁を作った経緯に繋がる。

When I trace back to the foundation of encountering with him

who drawn this portrait,

like the curiosity I mentioned above that

I tried to know about the fundamental universe,

and it is linked to the circumstances

which led to meeting him.

のしてんてん画家は鉛筆で極度に精密に描く画家だ。

The artist Noshitenten draws,

pencils employed with extreme precision.

彼の絵を初めて肉眼で見た時、

その完璧なほどの精密度に圧倒された覚えがある。

When I first saw his painting with my eyes,

I remember being overwhelmed

by his perfect precision.

この私達の肖像画にも

完璧な精密度で

エリックと私が5年前に視ていた未来図が描かれている。

In this portrait also depicts the figure of future

Eric and I had five years ago,

and he has drawn with perfect precision.  

当時の私達の心的状況が見事に再現されている。

Our emotional status at that time also superbly represented.

私達が5年前に視ていた未来像、

過去に歩んできた道が誠実に描かれもいる。

The path we stepped in the past,

the vision of the future

we prospected five years ago are faithfully depicted.

初めて依頼した絵を受け取った時、

彼ほど極度に精密に感情を描ける人はいないと

信じてたことが確信になった。

At the first moment

when I received this painting

which I requested; I became convinced that

no one could ever draw emotions as precisely he could.

夫との縁、

彼との縁、

他の人々との縁も循環が輪になっていて、

その輪の中には、

カール・セーガンとアインシュタイン、

坐禅と心理学、

インターネットとFacebookが

各構成要因の対になって

過去・現在・未来を結びあげている。

The bond with my husband,

the bond with him,

other relationships with people

they became a cyclic ring

and in the middle of the ring,

Carl Sagan and Einstein,

Zen and Psychology,

Internet and Facebook are paired

component factors.

And the pair bonds to past, present, and future.
