東北大学大学院教授 箕浦氏が 「まなびの杜」という東北大学が一般人の為に 発刊している雑誌の昨年12月発行号で次のような研究結果を発表しています。
「日本三代記」(56代清和天皇から58代光孝天皇（859年～887年）の間の歴史書)によれば「貞観11年（西暦869年）光を伴った鳴動と共に大地震が起き、 次いで押し寄せた津波は平野の奥深くまで侵入して陸奥国府の城下まで達し、 1000名を越す犠牲者が出た」と記されているそうです。彼は地質学者であり古代生物学者でもありますが、仙台平野の地層を研究し、今から3000年前までの地層からほぼ等間隔に3つの数センチの砂の層がありこれが津波によるものと推測し、その直近の層がこの「貞観」津波 によると推測しています。またこれらの砂の層の間が800年から1100年になっていることから、「貞観」津波が起こっている「貞観」11年（西暦869年）から今は1100年以上経っているから、そろそろ同じような大きな津波が来てもおかしくないと結論付けています。関心のある方は、以下のURLを参照して下さい。

Mr. Minoura, professor of post-graduate course of Tohoku University, announces his ratest study result regarding Sendai basin in the magazine --called "Manabi no Mori(Forest of study)" for the people outside the University-- published in Dec.,2010 as follows:
"Nihon Sandaiki(history book of the period of 56th Emperor 'Seiwa' thru 58th Emperor 'Kohkoh'(AD 859 thru AD887))"describes 'the disaster brought by an great earthquake with extraordinary light and thunderous noise and subsequent tsunamies in 869 which invaded deep into the Sendai basin reaching as far the castle of "Mutsu" region prefect office, inflicted on the region the victims more than 1000. "
He is a geologist and paleontologist, investigated the geology of Sendai basin, found its geological strata have 3 sandy strata, each as thick as 5 to 6 cm, virtually equally-spaced, and concluded these sandy strata had resulted from the tsunamies and the uppermost sandy stratum was the result of "Johgan" Tsunami. He calculated individual intervals of the tsunamies were 800 to 1100 years and concluded that a similar great earthquake and tsunami would take place any moment because more than 1100 years has had passed since the time of "Johgan" Tsunami.
