もう10年も経ってしまったけれど、夫とNYで知り合った頃、私はハーレムに住んでいた。
黒人とヒスパニック系住民が混ざり合った所で、あちこちからヒップホップとラテンミュージックが毎日聞こえてくるような場所。当時は白人もアジア人もほとんど見かけなかった。
そんなハーレムの12月。
私が住んでいた築約100年のアパートのエントランスも、ハデで趣味の悪い飾り付けでドレスアップした。
（趣味の悪さが、また面白かったんだけど）
家々の窓にもチープな電飾がチカチカ。
最寄りの駅に行く途中に、大きな教会があって、その入り口の小さな庭にはイエス・キリストとマリア、それに３人の聖人の像が飾られていた。
全員が肌の色を茶色に塗られていて、それがなんともおかしくて毎日そこを通るたびに眺めてたっけ。
そこに住む黒人たちの誇りと強烈な自己主張なんだなあと思いながら。
「キリストは黒人だった」とマルコムXも言ったらしい。
茶色のキリストさまもマリアさまも、なんだか愛嬌があってかわいかった。
１ドルショップ（日本でいう100円ショップ）でいくつも買った、黒い肌のサンタクロースのオーナメントが、今も私の手元にある。
It was 10 years ago when I met my husband.
I lived in Harlem NY.
It was a mixed area of African Americans and Hispanics.
You heard Hip Hop and Latin music everyday.
There were not many white people or Asians living there back then.
I lived in a 100 year-old building.
In December, it's entrance was dressed up in vulgar decoration
(I liked that they were corny looking).
Cheap illumination flickered in the windows.
There were a big church on the way to the train station.
They put statues of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and 3 saints, and painted their skin brown.
They looked funny, but it showed the pride and self-esteem of black people.
I enjoyed watching them every time I passed there.
Malcom X said that Jesus Christ was black.
Both the brown Jesus and Virgin Mary were charming!
I still have the brown-skinned Santa Claus ornaments I bought in a 1＄ store.
