Smartphones are everywhere these days, and they have dramatically changed our daily lives. Thanks to smartphones, we can get information without going to libraries. We can go anywhere without checking paper maps. Smartphones make our lives extremely convenient.
However, I feel smartphones have badly affected our communication behavior. The other day, I was in the bus and noticed about 90 percent of the passengers were looking at their phones without caring for others. A young man with his phone in his hand seated in, so called, a silver seat, did not become aware of an old lady standing in front of him. If he had paid a little attention to her, he would have offered her his seat. Nowadays, the atmosphere in the bus is totally different from the old days, when I sometimes enjoyed chatting with a complete stranger sitting in the next seat in a bus or a train. The same things happen in a restaurant. It is not rare to see a young couple sitting face to face at a table but looking at their phone displays without any words. It is very sad. I believe we go to a restaurant to have tasty food as well as enjoy conversations.
Moreover, teenagers with a phone reportedly have a chance to fall into online betting. They start it as if they are playing online games, and resulted in being hugely in debt. A couple of weeks ago, a parent interviewed by NHK said she did not know her son’s problem of gambles because all his actions had been done on his phone.
I am sure we cannot throw away our smartphones at this stage as we heavily rely on them every moment, but it is necessary to think again how we should use smartphones without harming humanity and dignity.
