Dear Ms Diana Doan-Crider, cc Yamazaki
How do you do? Let me introduce myself. I am Seiki Takatsuki a member of Japan Bear Network, though I am an ecologist studying ungulates. I read the poem “The oak tree” through the Mailing list of JBN, and was moved, Immediately, I translated into Japanese to spread to the ML. Then some people responded. A member further “translated” my translation (standard Japanese) into a dialect. That is wonderful. Then, I thought if this poem were translated into dialects of which places were suffered by tsunami, it will cheer up the people. I asked Koji-san to get permission from you since I thought it was our original poem. I believe there would be no problem, but I would like to confirm this translation and consequent usage will not be problematic for copyright. Let me hear your opinion.
Best,
Taka

Dear Takatsuki-san (I hope this is acceptable to call you this because I consider you all my very dear friends):
I have contacted the HALLMARK CARD COMPANY, which had the poem printed on a greeting card which was given to me by a friend a long time ago. I advised them that we were translating the poem into the different Japanese dialects, and to correct me if there was a problem. However, I believe it is INDEED permissible for you to proceed to translate the poem and bless many people, and I think the company would be very happy to know that it was helping our friends in Japan. Please move forward with the translation. Meanwhile, if I hear anything from the company, I will let you know.
Arigato!!!

Dear Diana, cc Yamazaki
Thank you for your immediate reply. I also ask you whether I can call you by your given name. I prefer to be called Taka, and please do that.
Anyway, it is nice to hear from you and you think it sounds ok for me to move ahead. I do not know whether you know or not, but because of long history, we have tremendous numbers of dialects in Japan. It is very difficult and even impossible to understand each other between northern and southern people. After TV development, it has greatly changed (the government says “improved” though), but it still remains and I like it. We are educated that the standard Japanese (close to Tokyo dialect) is good or beautiful, and therefore many people feel it is “correct”. This results in a kind of distance for local people between “words” and “heart”. A translation by our JBN member was very nice because we can feel the words are close to the heart, which is impossible by the standard. I am now asking the members to translate it into several dialects of the places suffered by the earthquake and tshunami.
Thank you again, and best regards,
Taka
Dear Taka-san,
I am SO pleased that this can be of encouragement. I will send more and more so that you all recover from this great trial.
We have many similar issues in Mexico with many dialects, so I can
understand why you would want to convey the message to so many.
Arigato, Diana

これが元気づけになるなんて「チョー」うれしいです。皆さんがこの試練から元気になるなら、もっともっと送ります。メキシコにも方言があるからメッセージを伝えたいというあなたの気持ちがよくわかります。アリガトウ、ダイアナ。

Dear Diana
After I spread the Japanese translation, two persons sent translation to dialects, both of them are wonderful! Another three persons informed that their friends are trying. I now recognize how our language is diversified, and each local people have developed nice expressions!
If you can know the poet of the oak tree, please let me know. Thank you in advance,
Best,
Taka

私の訳につづけて2人が方言訳をしてくれました。どちらもすばらしいです。さらに3人が挑戦しているそうです。改めて日本語が多様化しており、地方の人がすばらしい表現を発達させたということを感じます。ナラの木の作者をご存じならお知らせください。タカ

Dear Taka-san,
The poet of the card is from a company called Hallmark. They make greeting cards. We are fine with the translation as long as we do not use it in a commercial
way :-)
Arigato, and I am so glad it is helping!

Dear Diana
Thank you for your immediate reply. May I understand that this poem was made by unknown peroson?
ダイアナさん
さっそくのお返事ありがとう。詩人の名前はわからないということでしょうか?
3.31
Yes, the greeting card company could not give me the name since the person
who wrote the poem signed the copyright to the Hallmark Company.
That is sad, but nevertheless, that is how American companies work :-(
Diana
そういうことです。はがき会社は作者の版権を買っているので、名前を出せないのです。情けないことですが、アメリカの会社のやりかたなの。ダイアナ

Dear Diana
I see. I asked it because some asked me the poet name. By the way, we have several oak species, and in the southern part of Japan,w e have evergreen oaks. The oak forests are dark, and impression is very different from deciduous ones in northern Japan. Old Japanese nobelists translated "oak" as evergreen oak which results in misunderstanding. The oak in this poem must be deciduous one, and it is very suitable to cheer up the suffered people in northern Japan.
Taka
ダイアナさん
わかりました。何人かの人に詩人の名前を聞かれたので、お尋ねしました。ところで、日本にはオークがいくつかあって、南日本には常緑のものがあり、その林は暗く北日本の落葉ナラとは印象が全然違います。昔の日本の小説家はオークをカシと訳したために誤解が生じました。この詩のオークは落葉樹に違いありませんから、津波にあった北日本を元気づけるのにぴったりです。

Dear Diana
So far, as many as 7 versions from different dialects have been delivered All of them are so nice! Many friends sent emails to tell how they were moved and cheered, and support my activity. I wonder if you could write a message, many people feel nice and distribute them to friend. Could you tell how you felt, why you sent the poem to Koji-san, and what you expect etc. Your words must cheer the refugees! Thank you in advance.
ダイアナさん
これまでに7つの方言が届きましたよ。どれもすてきです!多くの友人がとても感動し、元気をもらった、この企画を支持するといってきました。もしダイアナさんがメッセージを送っていただけたらよろこびますし、それを友達に伝えてくれると思います。どう感じ、なぜ送ろうと思い、どうあってほしいと思いましたか。ダイアナさんのことばは被災者をきっと元気づけてくれるはずです。よろしくお願いします。

Dear Taka-san,
I am sorry for the delay, but we are battling with a very large fire in Mexico and I have been on the telephone and computer all day helping with
arrangements. This message to the Japanese people is very important to me so I want to be sure to write it carefully and with time. I hope to send this to you tomorrow.
Arigato!

遅れてごめんなさい。メキシコで大きい山火事があって準備を手伝うために電話とパソコンの前に釘付けです。日本の皆さんへのメッセージは私にとってとてもたいせつなものなのなので、じっくりと練りたいので、明日にでも送らせてください。アリガトウ、ダイアナ。

Dear Taka-san,
Forgive me for the delay, but we have been very busy tending to the fires in Mexico, trying also to obtain assistance from the United States as the fires have become very large. The people of Japan weigh very heavy on our hearts, so please do not let them think that they have been forgotten! I am thinking of you all daily and thinking about how your reaction to this terrible tragedy is STRENGTHENING US!! As the fires surround the beautiful mountains where I work in Mexico, they are very close to the houses. One of the ranchers (people who have cattle on the land) said that they were preparing to evacuate their homes because the fires were very large and fast. She said: “We are very sad, but then we think about the people of Japan, and it strengthens us.” I will write more tomorrow – I am very exhausted, Taka-san, but I thought it was important to know that like an oak, Japan stands strong in the hearts of many people!! Here is a link so you may view the fire from March 27, but now it has grown to more than twice the size: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxctLHHpBV8
Your friend,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxctLHHpBV8

It is kind of you, but what I hope is do not think it too serious. We are already much satisfied by that poem. I just thought that besides that if you sent any message, it will be much better. I did not say anything about your message, and nobody expects it. I am thinking to surprize my friends by your message. You can take enough time to write it, one week later or one month later. Again, I appreciate your faithfulness.
Taka
ダイアナさん
ご親切にありがとう。でもあまり深刻に考えないでください。あの詩だけでも十分だけど、あなたのメッセージがあったらもっとよいと思っただけです。誰にもこのことはいっていないので、期待する人はいませんが、私はみんなをびっくりさせようと思っているんです。一週間でも、一ヶ月でもかけてじっくり書いてください。真心に感謝します。タカ

Thank you “so” much for you message. I could not stop crying to read it. I guess the word “animo” means “life”, right? Animal or animation must root it. Your email is addressed to me, but may I show it to other Japanese friends who are reading dialect translations of “The Oak Tree”poem? It is also nice to read the Bible quote. For safety, could you tell the chapter in the bible? I would like to cite the word in Japanese-translated Bible, not my translation. Again, your message is so nice and touching our hearts. I know you are very tired by supporting activity for fires in Mexico, but you sent this email. Best, Taka

Dear Taka-san,
Of COURSE you may share it with everyone! You made me so happy to read your email, and it was very encouraging after a very difficult day. Thank you
for ANIMO!! The chapter is Romans 12:15, but I love the entire chapter. Thank you again, and I sincerely hope to visit soon.Your friend, Diana

もちろん私のメッセージはみなさんで読んでください。あなたのメールを読むのは愉しいわ。たいへんな毎日だったので読むと元気がでます。アニモをありがとう。聖書はローマ人への手紙の12章15節ですが、私はこの章全体がすきです。ありがとう、日本に行きたいと思っています。ダイアナ

Thank you for your immediate reply. Yes, correspondence with you is my great pleasure!
I do not know whether you know it or not, the northern area suffered this time by tsunami is economically behind partly because of cold climate as well as political reasons in the past. It is sad and I dislike that our government “modernized” Japan in late 19th century, and tried to “standardize” our language to the Tokyo standard, resulting in discrimination of dialects. Thus for a long period of time, the northern people had complex to their own dialects.
This time, all of us were surprised to see how the northern people are patient, generous, polite, and sweet to week people. All of Japanese living in cities have forgotten this beautiful attitude of old Japan.Your introduction of the poet The Oak Tree to us stimulated translation into the northern dialects (now we have 11!), and they are eloquently proving how their expression is wonderful! Isn’t it great?

Yes, and I must tell you, Taka-san, about my future organization. It will be a new non-profit organization to train students to be "rooted" to the land, and I work mostly with indigenous populations, or "native" peoples. I work closely with my own Mexican people, but I also work with our Native American Indians, and train them in the field of conservation, range management, ecology, etc. However, I do this with a different perspective where they understand how they were rooted in the land, and how it is not only a career or a job, but it is a "calling." Part of our mission is to "preserve traditional and cultural heritage, and keep people tied to the land." We blend academic training with the other elements to make a very well-rooted student.
I have decided TODAY to name my new organization: ANIMO, and the symbol will be an oak tree ;-)
Perhaps we can develop some ideas to help you all train your northern students in the same way some day! I will keep you more informed as we develop the group. I am in the process of developing the legal papers that our government will require. Wish me the best - we will do great things!

Dear Diana
I am trasslating your message, but the following expression is not clear to me, and ask you.
One day Japan will again be strong, but now, Japan's children are being impacted by your own courage and strength.
In this case, does "your" mean "Japanese adults"? Does "impact" mean "affected" in good sense? Does it mean something like "Japanese children are nervous and behavior of adults is important for their future? Sorry, my English is not good enough to smoothly understand what you mean.Taka
ダイアナさん
あなたのメッセージを訳しているのですが、次の表現がはっきりしません。「One day Japan will again be strong, but now, Japan's children are being impacted by your own courage and strength.」この場合、「your」は日本の大人ということですね?「impact」はいい意味で影響されるということですか?全体で「日本の子供は大人の行動をよくみていてそれが子供たちの将来に重要だ」というような意味ですか?ごめんなさい、すーっと理解できるほど英語がうまくなくて。タカ

This means that Japanese children are watching the example of the adults, and will be strong because the adults taught them to be strong. The adults are a good example for the children right now. Diana
