The Qwilleran went home to the barn to work on his address for the literary club.
He never read a speech in froun of an audience. Rather, he made notes to jog his
memory＿and ad-libbed.
Now he stretched out in a lounge chair with a pad and pencil. First he had
to recollect everything he knew about Edd Smith; they had been friends ever since
Qwilleran arrived in Pickax and became addicted to old books. Erery time he walked
down town he would swing around behind the post office and visit the quaint store＿
browsing, buying a book or two, and taking a can of sardines to Winston. Edd came
to consider him a “best friend , ”confiding in him about his family history.
Could his tales be believed ? He was descended from pioneers, who wer storytellers
and jokesters by nature. What they said could be true or invented or whimsical humor,
factual or exaggerated.

昨夜は、Ｆ１モナコグランプリ、盛り上がってましたね。解説者が！
カムイ５位・・・って、最近はあんまり見てなくて、詳しくないんだけど・・
宝くじが当たったら・・・一度は行きたい『Ｆ１モナコグランプリ』
などという夢の話は、ちょっと置いといて～、
今日は、もう少し地に足のついたお話を

『ハタチ基金』というのがあることを知りました。
東日本大震災発生時に0歳だった 赤ちゃんが、無事にハタチを迎えるその日まで
継続的に支援しようという取り組みのようです
ちょっと、ハタチという言葉に反応してしまいました
この春、無事に成人した息子。よくまあ、何事もなく無事に成長したねって
いろんな思いがありました。ＮＺ地震や東日本大震災のあとだったので。
ハタチ基金に協力することで、恩返し！？っていうのはへんかもしれないけど
何か少しでも役に立ちたいって思い、登録しました。本当にささやかな支援ですが・・・

It was Monday morning, and The Pirate's Chest was officially open for business.
Furthedmore, Qwilleran had promised to buy the first book at Eddington Smithe's Place.
He had to be there with a fat checkbook, and it had to be fatter than he thought.
Meanwhile, the Siamese were fed early, and he himself grimly prepared a bowl of
cereal and sliced bananas, monitored by Koko sitting atop the bar.
At nine-thirty Lisa was waiting with the key to the jelly cupboard for the first customer.
“I knew you wouldn't want publicity, Qwill, but it would havd made a front-page story＿
‘prominent citizen buys rare book for his cat to open ESP ! ’＿but then You'd have to
have Koko here, too , and he might not get along with Dundee ”
“You're dreaming, Lisa ! ”
“Violet wanted to be hrer , but she has a doctor's appointment in Lockmaster. Someone
is driving her there. ”

最近、『ネコバナナ』に、かなり結構ハマッテいる
『猫はバナナの皮をむく』が正式な日本語タイトルであるこのハヤカワミステリーは
なんと表紙が、めっちゃかわいかったりする

原書ペーパーバッグからレポート用紙に書き写し、平行して和訳の方も
書き写す作業が、だんだん楽しくなってきて、ネコバナナへの愛着も日に日に
増してきて、一部pick upでは、さみしいので改めて全文の書き写しにチャレンジ
してみようかな～と思い早速、専用ノートを買ってきた
そんなに気に入ったのなら買えば！って思うかもしれないけど・・・買っちゃうと
私の場合、いつでもできるって思ってしまうのが目に見えているので、とりあえずは、
図書館で期限付きで借りながら、進めようと思っておりますp(^^)q
両方写し終えたら・・・その時には、買ってもいいかも・・・なんてね

Sunday, noon. The Siamese had enjoyed their midday snack and were washing up
when Qwilleran sat down at the desk to find a number in the phone directory. Immediately,
YumYum sprang to the desktop and assumed a hostile pose. How did she know he was
about to call Fran Brodie ? The two females had been feuding since Day One.
Fran was the most glamorous woman in town, a talented member of the theater club,
the police chief's doughter, and second in command at Amanda's Studio of Interior Design.
She answered the phone in a sulky, morning- after voice.
In a tone of authority he said, “Elsewhere they have George Washington's
oak tree and Benjamin Franklin's printing press. We have the Hibbard House ! Yours not
to criticize. It rose from the sawdust of a million trees a century and half ago,
in spite of fire, flood, hurricane, and decorating snobs.” He knew that it irritated her
to hear interior design called “decorating.”

今日は気持ちのいい天気お洗濯日和
やりたいこと（ねばならないこと）が、い～っぱい

ネコバナナ ＥＬＥＶＥＮ 健康診断での企て

Qwilleran had set his alarm early for Saturday morning especting Opening Day
at the bookstore to be more of a problem then a success. He first phoned Polly
in Indian Village, but a message on her answering machine said that she could be
reached at the bookstore anytime after eight A.M.
Store hours started at nine-thirty, leading Qwilleran to deduce that
she had left home very, very early・・・or had spent the night in downtown Pockax＿
at the hotel or at a friend's apartment or ( not likely ) in a sleeping bag on the floor
of her office.
He started coffeemaker and fed the cats, but they showed no interest in
the preparation of their food. Nervously they hopped on and off the kitchen counter,
staring through the window with ears pricked to an angle denoting Full Alarm !

健康診断、手ごたえあり・・・って、どんな報告（笑）
体重は、記録更新前回より－１キロは確実p(^^)q　これぐらいゆるやかに
ダイエットすれば、リバウンドが無いのは勿論のこと、たるみの心配も無い
のでは！？と、３年計画で、あと－３キロ！と企てています

それから！それから！褒められた～～～
レントゲン順番待ちで並んでいる隣の方に、喋りかけて、あれこれ話してたら
「とても、２０歳の息子さんがいるように見えない！」と驚かれた～
一応、謙遜したけど、内心かなり喜んだ単純な私（笑）
痩せるにしても、老けないようにキレイに痩せるを目指しマス

ネコバナナ ＴＥＮ まず野菜をたっぷりいただくこと！

For the Siamese, it was a day like any other day; for the rest of the civilized
population of Moose County , it was a breathless lull between the press preview and
the public opening of the new bookstore. Qwilleran, being ahead of schedule with
his writing, spent much of the morning brushing the cat's coats, entertaining them
with a rollicking game of grab-the-necktie, and reading aloud to them from good
literature. If was Koko's responsibility to catch the book before it landed.
For reasons of his oun, the cat had shown an interest in Balzac ( in English ) ,
Emily Dickinson, and Zane Grey. Now he was on a Shakespeare kick. A complete
set of the annotated by Polly, and thay were a convenient format for pushing
off a shelf.

爽やかないい天気がつづきますね洗濯物を干しにベランダに出ても、
窓を開けて風を通しても、さらっとしていて気持ちがいいです

さて、明日は、いよいよ健康診断　採血とバリウムが特に苦手な私。
なので、今年は、バリウムは飲まないつもり・・・（胃腸元気だし。）

健診話のついでに、老化防止の耳寄り情報を一つ
先日、ＮＨＫの『ためしてガッテン』で、やってたんですけど、体内のコラーゲンの
老化を防ぐには、血糖値を上げないことがポイントで、その方法として有効な食事法
を紹介していました　とても簡単な方法で、食事の時に、食べる順番に
ちょっと注意するだけで、血糖値をぐっと抑えることができるらしく、簡単に一言で言うと、
最初に野菜をたっぷりいただく、これだけでいいそうです　
例えば、カレーとサラダを食べるとします。サラダを先に食べるだけで、
食後の血糖値の上がり方が半減するみたいです。逆にカレーを先に食べると、
血糖値がすぐに上がり、その後サラダを食べても血糖値は上がったまま。
同じものを食べるのに順番を変えるだけで、老化防止になるなんて、朗報です
さっそく実践しています。
しかし・・・もう少し早くに分かっていたらなぁ・・・と。
ておくれな気もしますが、ダイエットにもなるようなので、続けてみるつもりです

ネコバナナ ＮＩＮＥ 目標はキャサリン妃の知的なフェイスライン

On Thursday morning the Siamese breakfasted grandly on Lois's meat loaf,
while Qwilleran reluctantly sliced bananas into a bowl of dry cereal, wondering why
he had found cereal exceting in his boyhood. He had grown up with the packaged variety,
and the packaging itself had improwved his reading skills. He could spell “ingredients”
while other kids were learning to spell “cat” and “dog. ” Now, shopping at Toodle's Marked,
he had been overwhelmed by the enormous selection＿until he spotted a famous slogan
: Snap Crackle Pop ! He bought two boxes, but the sound effects were somehow less
intriguing to his middle-aged ears. He gift-wrapped the second box and dispatched
it to Arch Riker's office by motorcycle messenger, anonymously.
Within minutes, the phone rang＿more impatiently than usual , it seemed＿and
he purred a pleasant “good morning” into the mouthpiece.

今、最も本気になっていることは・・・ダイエットです
なぜなら明後日は、年に一度の健康診断
どうにかして、昨年より良い成績（結果でしょ！）を残したいと頑張っています
名古屋から帰って来て、体重を量ったら・・・やばいことに。
確かに、思う存分食べていたような気もしないではないけどぉ・・・

健康診断まで２週間無いことは承知していたので、本気出しました
結果、なんと２キロ痩せました最近の私には稀な快挙です
二重顎・・・っていうほどではないけど（？？？）、多少ふくよかだったフェイスラインも
いつになくすっきりしているように見えなくもない感じ
健診に向けての目標は、まあ達成したと言っていいでしょう

となれば・・・次の目標です
もう、すでに私の頭の中にはそれが浮かんでいまして～
ロイヤルウェディング以来、ひそかに企てていたことなんですが・・・
『キャサリン妃の知的なフェイスライン』・・・次の目標は、これに決めました
う～ん。痩せるだけじゃダメなのよね。表情筋を鍛えなきゃねがんばりま～す

ネコバナナ ＥＩＧＨＴ 役員母ランチ・・・

Grudging, Qwilleran chomped his bowl of cereal and sliced bananas that morning,
insead of the sweet, sticky bachelor berakfast that had formerly ushered in his days.
He wondered whether he would experience any increased productivity or brilliant ideas or
improved writing skills. He doubted it・・・although an idea struck him whild champing,
and he considered its possibilities. He had recently written therr books＿a collection
of local legends, a campilation of cat lore, and the text for a portfolio of Moos Conty
photograohs＿all published by the K Fund. Now, how about・・・・？
He phoned the county historian at home.
“ Thorn, what do you know about the Hibbard Guest House ? ”
“ I don't know what it is now, but I know what it used to be. The Hibbards
are one of those four-generation pioneer families, you know. Old fellow who built
the house was illiterate but rich ; his great-granddaughter is a professor of literature and,
I presume, well off. ”

昨日は、久しぶりに高校時代の役員母ランチしてきました
ランチ自体は、いろんな情報交換やら、貴重な話も沢山聞けたので有意義な
楽しい時間でした。
計画にもう少し前向きになれればよかったな～と反省な一日でもありました
まだまだ修行が足りん・・・

ネコバナナ ＳＥＶＥＮ

Qwilleran walked downtown to file his Tuseday “Qwill Pen” column before
the noon deadline and returned by way of Granny's Sweet Shop. His recent ruminations
about banana splits had given him the urge to try one for lunch. He reasoned that it would
provide his banana for the day. And he was in a goof mood when he returned to the apple barn
in time to hear the phone ringing.
A man's voice said, “Mr. Qwilleran ? Mrs. Duncan gave me your phone number. ”
　“Don't tell me ! Let me guess ! You're Jack Worthing aka Ernest. ”
　“You have a good ear , sir ”
　“You have a destinctive voice , sir. What can I do for you ? ”
　“Mrs. Duncan has assigned me to start a literary club under the auspices of the bookstore ,
and she thinks you will have some input. Could you spare some time this afternoon ? ”

最近は、シャムネコ・ココシリーズの『 The cat who went Banana 』より、Pick up
して、タイピングを楽しんでいます　一応、ちゃんと意味も把握してま～す

ネコバナナ ＳＩＸ そして披露宴

It was early Monday morning. Qwilleran was groggily pressing the button on his
automated coffeemaker. The cats were staggering down the ramp from their sleeping quarters
on the third balcony＿stretching, yawning, waking up their fur with electrifying shudders.
He had forgotten about the WPKX news bulletin until Carol Lanspeak phoned.
“Qwill ! Did you hear about the accident last night ? The victim's name has just been released !
It was Ronnie. It was our Ronnie ! You know＿Ronald Dickson, who played Algrnon ! I feel terrible
about it＿such a nice young man＿and he was going to be married soon. ”
“Sad news,”Qwilleran murmured. “What were the circumstances ? Does anyone know ? ”
“A few members of the cast went to Onoosh's to celebrate after the matinee.
Ronnie had to drive back to Lockmaster. He missed the curve at the bridge. We're canceling
all performances and refunding ticket money. Will your review be running today＿anyway ? ”

披露宴の行われたパーティールームもチャペル同様、白を基調とした装飾で統一されていて、
大きな窓からは、白いテラスとパステルブルーの海と空！遠くに見えているブリッジは・・・
後で調べたら、＜名港トリトン＞伊勢湾岸道路に架かる３つの橋とのこと。
トリトンの「トリ」は「三つ」を意味する「tri-」に通じることや、トリトンが海の神ポセイドンの
息子の名であることなどが理由でこの愛称が選ばれたのだとか。
ついでに「tri-」の付く言葉を思い浮かべて見ると・・・トリオ、トリコロール、トライアングル、
トライアスロンなどなど・・・ちょっと英語ブログらしい！？

と話題が・・・すっかりずれてしまいましたので・・・戻しますが
今時の結婚式・披露宴は、いろんなスタイルがあるとは思いますが・・・
姪のは、結構時間をかけて、自分たちで一からプロデュースするタイプのもので・・もちろん
専門のスタッフのアドバイスを受けながらではありますが・・なんだか、らしさが出ていて、
細やかな気配りが行き届いたアットホームで手作り感いっぱいの温かい披露宴で
とても感動しました。姪がピアノで弾いた I WiSH の『明日への扉』もジーンときました
新郎は披露宴でも、ところどころで涙目。気持ちのやさしい人なのね・・・って感じて
安心しました
仕合わせな人生を送って欲しいと思います

ネコバナナ FIVE 姪のウエディング報告その１

On Sunday Qwilleran was a willing guest at an impromptu dinner party, the purpose of
which was to empty the Rikers' refrigerator. Mildred Riker was the food editor of
the Moose County Something; Her husband, Arch, was editor in chief＿and a longtime
friend of the “ Qwill Pen ”columnist. The couple had made a sudden decision to
close their house at the lake and return to winter quarters in Indian Village.
When Mildred called Qwilleran with the invitation, she said, “After Labor Day
the cottagers start moving out, and the shoreline gets bleak. If you don't mind helping us
clear out the refrigerator・・・・”
“Always glad to be of assistance, ”he said quickly. “I'm very good at emptying refrigerators.
How many courses do you think you can squeeze out of the old box? ”
“Five, at last. I called Polly, but she's not available. I called Comptons, too.
Lyle is out of town, but Lisa will be here. She can tell us all about the rare books
they've found among the ESP donations.”

今日は、ウエディング報告
予備知識ゼロで訪れた式場は・・・ロマンティックな海辺の白いチャぺル
開かれた扉の中に進んで最初に視界に入ってきたのは初めて見るガラスのバージンロード！
ガラスの下の空間には可愛らしい花々が敷きつめられていて・・・なんだか夢の世界に迷い
込んだような気分そして前方に目を向けると、そこには前面ガラス張りの祭壇！
青く光る海と空が一望できる白と水色と光の空間　
ほうとため息がでるような空間にしばし見とれていました
そこへ、いよいよ新郎新婦登場！姪っ子のウエディングドレス姿にまたまた見とれ
なんだか、自分ももう一回ぐらいしてみたい気分になってしまった？？？（笑）
花嫁は、終始ひまわりみたいな笑顔とってもイケメン君な新郎の方はやや緊張気味！
感極まって・・涙？・・なんてシーンも
まだ23歳と24歳という、とっても初々しいカップルでありました

明日は・・・披露宴のことも少し書いてみようと思いま～す
