On Jan. 19, U.S. think tank "the Center for Strategic and International Studies" (CSIS) released its policy recommendation to state that in order to deter threat of N. Korea, which has proceeded nuclear & missile development, re-deplyoment of nuclear weapons in S. Korea should be considered, (>"Recommendations on North Korea Policy and Extended Deterrence").
It required the U.S. to upgrade its "extended deterrence," in which it engages in the defense of its allies with nuclear weapons and conventional forces, and to further deepen U.S.-Japan-S. Korea trilateral cooperation.

The Commission that compiled the recommendations was co-chaired by CSIS President and CEO John J. Hamre and former Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Joseph S. Nye Jr., and names of defense & diplomacy experts are listed including pro-Japan former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Lee Armitage.
It pointed out that the current situation in which the U.S. focuses on dealing with the Ukraine crisis provides a "convenient environment" for N. Korea to develop its nuclear strike capability.

It turned out on Jan. 21 via coverage(s) with concerned-person(s) that, taking it into consideration that China has activated unauthorized marine researches in the Japanese exclusive economic zone (EEZ) around the Senkaku Islands (Ishigaki City, Okinawa Pref.), the Japan Coast Guard has fixed a policy to newly build two large large survey ships with unmanned observation boat since 2024.
In response to China, which one-sidedly claims the extension of the continental shelf in the East China Sea, where the right to develop marine resources is recognized, the JCG has a policy to collect scientific survey data that serves which serves as a ground of rightfulness and proceed with geological analysis by using state-of-the-art large-scale survey ships.

In order to secure maritime rights and interests and maritime superiority, it explained to proceed maintenance and to higher-functionality of survey ships and survey equipment, and to upgrade the abilities to analyze obtained date and disseminate the outcomes to the world.

According to concerned-person(s), the newly built large survey ships will be equipped with an unmanned observation boat "ASV" (autonomous surface vehicle) possible to automatically navigate dangerous sea areas such as submarine volcanic zones.
The ASV will be equipped with instruments to measure water temperature, ocean currents, salinity, etc.
It will also be equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment such as "AUV" (autonomous underwater vehicle) possible to dive close to the seafloor.
According to the JCG, Chinese oceanographic research ships have repeatedly conducted unauthorized surveys around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, the Okinawa Trough, off Japan's southernmost island, Okinotori Island (Ogasawara Village, Tokyo), etc.

In EEZs and continental shelves, coastal states have the right to exploit resources such as oil and natural gas under the sea.
In the East China Sea, China and S. Korea claimed in 2012 that their continental shelves extended to near the Japan's territorial waters east of the Okinawa Trough over the geographical median line.
In order to refute the claims of China and so on, it's necessary to collect & analyze more detailed seafloor topography data. The JCG therefore has judged that it's necessary to construct large survey ships equipped with state-of-the-art survey equipment.

S. Koreans often say "gancheop" half-jokingly, when they laugh at someone and say that "Don't you know even such matter?" in conversation.
It's the word comes from "gancheop", namely "spy," and it's ironic that "As a S. Korean, if you don't know such matter, you are equibalent to a spy who has infiltrated from N. Korea."
