Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet. My small participation in that process was one of the most humbling and inspiring experiences of my life.	個人の幸福と安全が保証されている普通の人が、大勢で手を携え全く知らないそしてこれからも会うことのない人たちを救うのです。その過程に少しでも参加できたことは私の人生で最も慎ましく刺激を受けた経験の一つでした。
Unlike any other creature on this planet, humans can learn and understand, without having experienced. They can think themselves into other people’s places.	この惑星の他の生物とは違い、人類は経験しなくても学び理解することができます。他の人の気持ちになって考えることができるのです。
Of course, this is a power, like my brand of fictional magic, that is morally neutral. One might use such an ability to manipulate, or control, just as much as to understand or sympathise.	これはハリー・ポッターの魔法のような力ですが、善くも悪くもない中立的な力なのです。誰かを操ったり支配したりするのに使うこともできますし、誰かを理解したり共感したりするのにも使えます。
And many prefer not to exercise their imaginations at all. They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are. They can refuse to hear screams or to peer inside cages; they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.	想像力を使うのを嫌う人もたくさんいます。自分の殻の中で満足し、今とは違う境遇に生まれていたらどうだったろうと考えることすらありません。悲鳴を耳にするのも檻の中を覗き込むのも嫌がります。自分に関係のないことに心を割くことはありません。知ろうともしないのです。
I might be tempted to envy people who can live that way, except that I do not think they have any fewer nightmares than I do. Choosing to live in narrow spaces leads to a form of mental agoraphobia, and that brings its own terrors. I think the willfully unimaginative see more monsters. They are often more afraid.	あまり悪夢を見ないのであれば、私もそういう人たちを羨ましく思うでしょう。狭い世界で生きようとすることは精神的な広場恐怖症ですし、それ独自の恐怖を産みます。わざと想像力を使わない人のほうが怪物を多く見ます。そういう人たちのほうが怖がりなのです。
What is more, those who choose not to empathise enable real monsters. For without ever committing an act of outright evil ourselves, we collude with it, through our own apathy.	さらに、思いやりの気持ちを持とうとしない人は本物の怪物を作り出します。明白な悪に対して行動を起こさなければ、黙認してその悪に加担したことになります。
One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.	当時私がはっきりとはわからない何かを追い求めて、18歳で飛び込んだ古典の回廊の端で学んだことの一つは、ギリシア人作家プルタルコスのこの言葉です。「心で決めたことが世界を変える」
That is an astonishing statement and yet proven a thousand times every day of our lives. It expresses, in part, our inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact that we touch other people’s lives simply by existing.	これは驚くべき言葉ですが、毎日の生活の中で何度も証明されています。私たちは外の世界と分かち難く結びついており、存在しているだけで他の人の人生に関わっているという事実も表しています。
But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders. That is your privilege, and your burden.	ですが、ハーバードの2008年の卒業生の皆さんは、どれほどそれ以上に他の人の人生と関わることができていますか？皆さんの知性、難しい仕事もこなせる力、今まで受けてきた教育のおかげで、皆さんは比類のない地位と責任を担うことになります。国籍も皆さんを際立たせています。皆さんの大多数は世界で唯一残る超大国に属しています。皆さんの投票が、皆さんの生き方が、皆さんの抗議行動が、皆さんの政府への圧力が、国境を越えて大きな影響力を持ちます。それは皆さんの特権であり重責でもあります。
If you choose to use your status and influence to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice; if you choose to identify not only with the powerful, but with the powerless; if you retain the ability to imagine yourself into the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence, but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped change.	もし皆さんが自分の地位と影響力を弱い立場の人たちのために使うのなら、もし皆さんが強者とだけでなく弱者と同じ気持ちを持てば、もし皆さんが皆さんよりも不利な立場にいる人たちのことを想像する力を持ち続けるなら、皆さんの存在を祝福してくれるのは皆さんの誇りとする家族だけではなく、皆さんにその現実を変えてもらった何千何百万もの人たちもです。
We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.	世界を変えるのに魔法は必要ありません、すでに私たち自身の内に必要な力は全部持ち歩いているのです。もっと良いものを想像する力を持っているのです。
I am nearly finished. I have one last hope for you, which is something that I already had at 21. The friends with whom I sat on graduation day have been my friends for life. They are my children’s godparents, the people to whom I’ve been able to turn in times of trouble, people who have been kind enough not to sue me when I took their names for Death Eaters. At our graduation we were bound by enormous affection, by our shared experience of a time that could never come again, and, of course, by the knowledge that we held certain photographic evidence that would be exceptionally valuable if any of us ran for Prime Minister.	これでほぼ終わりです。皆さんに最後に希望するのは、私が21歳のときにすでに手にしていたものです。卒業式の日に一緒に座った友人たちは私の生涯の友です。私の子供たちの名づけの親であり、困ったときに頼れる人たちであり、デスイーターの名前にその名前を使っても私を訴えなかった優しい人たちです。卒業式に、私たちはとても大きな愛情によって、二度とは来ない時間を一緒に経験したことによって、その中の誰かが首相に立候補したら法外な値が出る証拠写真を持っているという事実によってずっと友達です。
So today, I wish you nothing better than similar friendships. And tomorrow, I hope that even if you remember not a single word of mine, you remember those of Seneca, another of those old Romans I met when I fled down the Classics corridor, in retreat from career ladders, in search of ancient wisdom:	ですから今日、皆さんにそういう友情以上のものは願いません。そして明日、たとえ皆さんが私のスピーチの一言も覚えていないとしても、皆さんには、私がキャリアの梯子から下りて、古の知恵を探しに古典の回廊へ逃避していたときに出会ったあの古代ローマ人の一人セネカの言葉を覚えておいてほしいと思います。
As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.	「物語も人生も同じです：どれだけ長いかではなく、どれだけ良いのか、それが重要です」
