今回の話題は、私達の郷里、福岡県大牟田市に帰省した際に
JR大牟田駅前の喫煙所で見かけた英文です。
Most of the things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
センテンスの訳は画像を見ていただくとして、
ポイントは先頭の「Most of the things」でしょうか。
これです。
このmostはof句が続いていることでもわかるとおり名詞のmostです。
ですから、形容詞のmostを使い、
Most things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
と書き換えることが可能。ただし、微妙なニュアンスの違いはあります。
例文を一つ。
Most Japanese people are indiferent to most of the left-wing arguments
against accepting the most disaster debris by Tokyo Metropolis.
（日本人の大部分は概して、都道府県の中で、最大規模の震災瓦礫を受け入れた
東京都に対する左翼からの抗議のほとんどについて無関心である）
つまり、「Most Japanese people」は「一般的に、日本人のほとんど」という意味。それに比べ、「most of the left-wing arguments」は「東京都の震災瓦礫の受け入れを巡る」という限定がついた議論の大部分という、いわば条件付の大部分なのです。前者が無条件に大部分、後者は条件付の大部分と言えばばわかりやすいでしょうか。だから、「左翼の議論」ではなく「日本人の議論」に換えると意味もこうなるわけです。

ちなみに、

つまり、

は非文（文法的に間違った／意味不明なセンテンス）です。これ基本ですけれど、
TOEICにも時々出題されている論点。2年間毎回受験すれば2～3回は遭遇するくらい
だったと思います。
更に、Most things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
のmostは形容詞の中でも「限定詞／決定詞：determiner」に分類されるもの。
ちなみに、「限定詞」とは冠詞や指示代名詞、所有格の代名詞のことです。
重要なことは、これらプライドの高い「限定詞」は、
他の「限定詞」とは一緒に使えないこと。逆に言えば、
あるタイプの他の形容詞とともに使われることを潔しとしない
形容詞のことを「限定詞」と呼ぶとも言える。
限定詞は一つの名詞に対しては1個しか使えない
だから、
Most the things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
Most those things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
Most Omuta-city's things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
も非文になります。よって、例えば、
上の三番目の非文例で言いたい（と想像される？）ことは、
Most of Omuta-city's things dropped around the plants weren't flower petals.
とすれば文法的には正しい英文になります。
最後に、次のセンテンスも正しい英文。ただ、機能英文法的には、
これに英語のネーティブスピーカーが違和を感じないためには、そのセンテンスの前に、
どこの場所にある「plants」のことかの情報が提供されていることが望ましいと言える、鴨。

どうでしょうか、画像の元のセンテンスとの違いわかりますでしょうか。

要は、このthe mostは「many：多くの」の最上級の「最も多くの」意味。
ですから、「～の中の大部分」という意味のMost of the thingsやMost things
とは微妙にではなく別の意味の語句になるのです。
ということで、上に記した例文も「納得」でしょうか。これです。
