ブレーンワールド（膜宇宙、braneworld）またはブレーン宇宙論（brane cosmology）とは、『我々の認識している4次元時空（3次元空間+時間）の宇宙は、さらに高次元の時空（バルク（bulk））に埋め込まれた膜（ブレーン（brane））のような時空なのではないか』と考える宇宙モデルである。低エネルギーでは（我々自身を含む）標準模型の素粒子の相互作用が4次元世界面（ブレーン）上に閉じ込められ、重力だけが余剰次元（5次元目以降の次元）方向に伝播できる、とする。

 

ブレーンワールド理論とは、宇宙が私たちが普段知っているような3次元空間ではなく、4次元以上のより高次元空間に広がっている可能性があるという仮説です。

具体的には、ブレーンワールド理論では、我々が知る3次元空間を含む大きな宇宙の中に、2つの「膜」（ブレーン）が存在すると考えられます。我々が住む宇宙は、そのうちの1つのブレーン上に存在しているとされています。もう1つのブレーンは、我々が知覚できない別の空間に存在しているとされています。

『リサ・ランドール 異次元は存在する』の方は「未来への提言」を活字に起こしたもので、100ページ足らずである。宇宙飛行士若田光一氏との対談が主となっていて、『ワープする宇宙』の内容を簡潔に伝えるとともに、内気な数学少女だったハイスクール時代からハーバード大学の教授になり、5次元理論で頭角をあらわすまでのライフ・ヒストリーが語られている。

　『ワープする宇宙』は章の頭にアシーナという11歳の少女の物語を置いて、枕にしている。アシーナはタイムマシンで現代にやってきたアイク・ラシュモア42世という未来人に導かれ、『不思議な国のアリス』そこのこけの冒険をして5次元時空の不思議を体験する。ルイス・キャロルが大好きだというランドールらしい趣向である。

　ランドールの5次元理論は余剰次元理論の一種だが、余剰次元理論はひも理論から出てきた。ひも理論では万物は振動する微小なひもだと考えるが、3次元でひもを振動させると振幅が宇宙規模に広がってしまうので、9次元＋時間の10次元時空で振動を考える。10次元時空の振動だときれいに振幅がおさまるそうだが、3タイプのひも理論ができてしまった。その後、次元を1増やして11次元時空を考えると、3タイプのひも理論が統一的に理解できることがわかった。これをM理論という。10次元時空の3つのひも理論は、11次元時空のM理論の特殊な場合というわけである。

　10次元でも11次元でもいいが、われわれが知覚できるのは縦・横・高さの3次元だけである。時間をくわえても4次元にすぎない。残りの次元――余剰次元――はどうなっているのか。

　余剰次元はミクロの世界に縮んでいるというのがひも理論の答えである。

　ストローを考えてほしい。ストローは離すと一本の線に見えるが、目に近づけてよくよく見るると円筒形をしており、長さにくわえて円周というもう一つの次元をもっている。余剰次元はストローの円周方向のように隠れているというのだ。

　余剰次元が本当にあるのかどうかはわからない。10次元にしろ、11次元にしろ、そう考えると式がきれいにまとまるという数学の都合の話であって、実証されたわけではない。だからひも理論でノーベル賞をとった学者はまだいない。

　縮んだ余剰次元を説明した条はみごとである。9次元＋時間、もしくは10次元＋時間であっても、3次元＋時間と見なせることを、ランドールはニュートン万有引力の法則を例に説明する。引力は距離の二乗に反比例して弱まっていくが、これはホースで水をまくと、距離の二乗に反比例して水がまばらになっていくようなものだという。距離の二乗になるのは、水のまかれる面積が二乗で増えていくからである。水のまかれる面積が増えれば増えるほど、水はまばらになっていく。それと同じように、重力も距離の二乗に反比例して弱まっていく。

　もし余剰次元が縮んでいなかったら、重力は距離の8乗とか9乗で急激に弱まっていただろう。

　こんな説明はこれまで読んだことがなかった。しかもこの記述は重力が他の3つの力に較べて桁違いに弱い理由を解明した5次元理論の伏線となっている。

　『ワープする宇宙』が長いにはそれだけの理由があるのである。生クリームに砂糖をまぶしたような啓蒙書に物足りなくなっている人には、本書は打ってつけの本といえる。ランドールは先生として第一級にちがいない。

ひも理論は違う。これは純粋に理論上の疑問と着想にもとづいていて、まだ数学的に完全に定式化されてもいないから、その予言についても、確たることは何も言えない。

集中（止）と瞑想（観）

 

 

 

　では瞑想に入ろう。

　坐は半珈鉄坐。坐蒲をもちいる。瞑想の手印を組もう。これが初歩的瞑想の基本姿勢である。（図５参照。ただし、この図では法界定印であるが、後出のアーカーシャームドラーをもちいる場合もある。

　瞑想の修行は、二つの領域から成り立つ。

　ひとつは精神集中法、ひとつは瞑想である。

心を集中するとは。まず、シャマタ（止）である。、禅における公案、また、祈りを捧げるとか、経を読む、真言を唱えるなども、精神集中法のひとつである。要はひとつのことに心を集中し、そこに〃止”まり、動かないことである。

これは、ひとっのことに心を集中するのである。

数息観がそ‘の代表であるが、、とで’‐　ことてことに意識を集申し、他のものに心を向けない、これを積極的に意識的におこなうのであるひこれは修行のはじめの過程として、だれでも通るものである。

この精神集中の状態は二つに分けることができる。ひとつはこ息識的精神集中」で、ひとつのことに

　つぎの段階が、「無意識的精神集中しの状態である。これは、高度のもので、意識的精神集中をつづけているうちに、習練によって条件づけられ、ついに、とくに意識しないでもひとつのことに心を集中することができるようになる。

　これによって無意識の意識層をコットロ’ーうでは絶対に統御できない無意識の意識を、ある特定の対象に向けることができるようになるのである。

心の流れにまかせるとは

　つぎに、ビパシャナ（観）である。

　これは、ひとつのことに注意をとどめない。心の動きのひとつひとつに心を向けていくが、ひとつのことにとどまっていない。心の流れにまかせるのであ

る。

　これにも、「意識的瞑想」と「無意識的瞑想」がある。

　「意識的瞑想」は、表面意識が心の流れを観ている。

　「無意識的瞑想」は、深層意識の心の流れそのものになっている。

　では、その深層意識の流れを観ているものはなにか？　だれが深層意識の流れを観ているのか？　それは「無意識的精神集中」の心である。

　だから、「止」と「観」は密接な関係があるのである。いまおこなわれている瞑想のほとんどは、「止」か「観」か、どちらかにかたよっている。禅は「止」にウェイトがかかり、瞑想（としてやっているもの）は、「観」が主である。しか

し、「止」を完成した「観」でなければほんとうの瞑想ではなく、「止」でとど

まって「観」に入らない定は、これまたほんとうの瞑想ではないのである。

　「止」と「観」はおなじように修せられなければならない。そうして、非常に

高度の瞑想（観）をするためには、おなじように非常に高度の巣中（止）が体得されていなければ不可能なのである。

　では「意識的瞑想」と「無意識的瞑想」とはどうちがうのか？

　ひと口でいうならば、

　意識的瞑想は「個の世界」を観、

　無意識的瞑想は「全の世界」を観る。　・

　といったらよいであろう。

　意識的瞑想は「自分だけの世界の流れ」を観るのである。

　無意識的瞑想は「人類そのものの（世界の）流れ」を観るのである。いや、

もっと拡大した世界だ。「宇宙そのものの流れを観る」といったらよいであろう。

無意識の意識層には、原初からの人類の記憶がすべておさめられている。いや、人類以前からの記憶がすべて秘められている。
