In a five-year study, researchers conducted interviews with the top twenty performers in six fields: concert pianist, Olympic swimmers, artist, tennis players, mathematicians and brain surgeons. They also interviewed their families and teachers, hoping to learn how these individuals developed into extraordinary performers.
The researchers heard of enormous drive and dedication, with most top performers spending many hours practicing or studying every day when they were young. Moreover, in almost all cases their parent played a key role. They did this first by exposing the children at an early age to music, sport or learning and secondly by teaching them to value hard work and competition. The parents said in the interviews that they wanted their sons and daughters to have ‘normal’ childhoods, and that they had no idea that would achieve unusual success. But once their children displayed an interest and enthusiasm in a particular area, the parents encouraged them at every step.
The research team concluded that a combination of hard work and the influence of their parents from an early age was the main reason for the success of top performers.
