  And  in  the  store  we  were,  and  for  
the  first  time  in  my  life  I  was  con-
fronted  with  a  staircase  which  moved  by
itself.   First  I  stared  at  it,  thinking  this
in  itself  was an  exhibition  piece ;  but  
when  I  saw  people  step  on  it  and  be 
moved  upwards  in  front  of  my  very  eyes,
I  got  an  uncomfortable  feeling,  as  though
I  were  witnessing  witchcraft.  When  invited
however,  to  take  the  fatal  step  myself,  I
most  vigorously  declined.   Meanwhile,  a 
number  of  people  had  gathered  behind  us.
We  were  obviously  blocking  traffic.

　そして私たちは百貨店に入りました．そして
人生で初めてひとりでに動く階段と向き合いま
した．まず初め、これ自体が陳列品じゃないか
と思い、その階段をじっと眺めていました．し
かし他の人たちがこれに足を乗せて、そのまま
上へと運ばれて行くのを眼前に見ると、その魔
力は目の当たりにしていたものの、私は気持ち
が落ち着かなくなりました．決心して乗るよう
に誘われたのですが、私は精力的に無理だと言
い続けました．そうこうするうち、私たちのう
しろには大勢の人が集まり始めました．どうや
ら、私たちは通行の妨げをしていたようでした．
