猿供養寺の人柱ー(3)

坊さんは、村のしょが今日まで助け合い、励ましあってきたことを思って、感心するばかりだったと。

 「わしが人柱になろう。わしにその役めをさせてくれんか。

 仲の良い村のしゅうだれひとりなくしてもいけねえ。わしは、仏につかえる身じゃ。こんなによい人たちのお役にたてれば本望じゃ」

　坊さんは村のしょに話しだしたと。村のしょの心の美しさをほめて人柱を用意するようにいうたと。

　The monk was filled with admiration for how the villagers had helped and encouraged each other. 

 "I'll be a human pillar. Let me take on that role." 

 The monk began speaking to the villagers.

 "I don't want to lose any of these good people in this village. I'm a servant of Buddha. I really wish I could be of any help to such good people."

 He praised the beautiful hearts of the villagers and told them to prepare to set up a human pillar.

　その晩は、村のおさのうちに泊まり、次の日の朝げ、坊さんは身をきよめたと。真っ白いきものを着て、最後のお経をとなえたと。澄んだ声が村のしょの心のおく深くしみとおったと。村のしょにほほえみかけると、別れをいうて、ほってある穴に入ったと。ほうして静かに甕をかぶったと。村のしょは、涙ながらに、かたくかたく土をかぶせたと。

  The monk stayed at the house of the vllage chief that night and purified himself in the next morning. He was dressed in a pure white kimono and chanted the last sutra. His clear voice penetrated into the hearts of the villagers. He smiled at the villagers, said goodbye, and went into the hole the villagers had dug. Then he quietly put himself in the urn. The villagers, in tears, covered the monk in the urn with hard, hard soil.

　

　こんげして、たっとい人柱ができたんだと。

　ふしぎなことに、それからなん日もしないうちに、大地の動きはすっかり止まったと。

　その後、何百年もの間、この村には地滑りがなかったと。

 In this way, a precious human pillar was created. 

 Strangely enough, within a few days the earth stopped moving completely. 

 For hundreds of years after that,  no landslides occurred in this village.

そして今人柱になった旅の坊さんが通ってきた黒倉山の峠道は現在、里山ハイキングコース「信越トレイル」の一部になっています。

また、北陸新幹線の「はくたか」は、長野県側の飯山駅からこの峠下の「飯山トンネル」（22.25km）を抜けると3分で、新潟県側の「上越妙高駅」に到着します。

信越トレイル長野と新潟県境の1000m級の低山の尾根を巡る全長110kmの「信越トレイル」は、国内では稀なロングデｲスタンス ハイキングコースです。

ここには今人柱供養堂と地滑り資料館もあります。

猿供養寺の人柱（民話）

この言い伝えは事実だったのです。

　昭和12年（1937年)３月、近くの田を耕していたお百姓さんが、新しい田んぼに土を入れようとして土地を削っていると、甕が出てきました。その甕の中にはお祈りをしている人の姿がったのです。大学の先生に調べてもらったところ、800年も前の旅のお坊さんだろうということが分かりました。

猿供養寺の人柱（Human Pillar in SaruKuyoji)

①ずうっとむかしのことらと。

　猿供養寺（さるくようじ）の村（中頸城郡板倉町猿供養寺）は、毎年毎年、地滑りで困っていたったと。春先の雪解けの頃や、雨がいっぺえ降る秋の終わりごろになると、きまったように地面が動いて、田畑が壊れたり、家が崩れたりしたと。

　この年もまた、春先の地滑りが始まったと。

　「地の神様がおこんなさったどお」

　「うらやまじゃ」

　「前の田もだあ」

　「早くしずめねえと大変だどお」

It's a long, long time ago.

　The village of SaruKuyoji suffered from landslides every year. In early spring when the snow melts,  and in late autumn  when it rains a lot, the ground regularly moves, causing fields to collapse and houses to fall down. 

　This year too, landslides began in early spring. 

 "The god of the earth is angry!"

 "It's happening in the back mountain."

 "Even in the front rice field, as well"

 "Calm it down sooner, or a big problem will occur!"

②村のしょ（衆）は口々にわめいて、松の木屋敷に集まったと。めいめいが持ち寄った酒や野菜を供えて、今まで動いたことのない松の木屋敷で、お祈りを始めたと。

　んだども、この年は三日も祈り続けたろも、地面の動きは止まらなかったと。うすきみ悪い地鳴りは、だんだんひどうなって、どろ土に巻き込まれる家ももでてきたと。

　Shouting aloud, the villagers gathered at the pine-tree grounds which had never moved before. They each offered sake and vegetables, and began to

 pray.

 However, this year, even though they kept praying for three days, the ground didn't stop moving. The eerie rumbling of the ground got worse and worse, and 

some houses were engulfed in muddy soil.

③地滑りが始まって八日目になったときらと。

　村のもん全部が、人柱というて、地の神様に生きたまんまの人を埋めておまいりするしかないと思うようになったと。

 「わたしを人柱にさしてくんなさい」と若いむすめが言うと、　

　こんどは年寄りが「娘がいぐんなら、このわしがまいるだ。わしは年とってる。命はおしくねえ」と、言うんだと。松の木屋敷に集まっても、誰にするか考えるばっかで、少しもきまらんかったと。ー続くー

 It was the eighth day after the landslide started. All the villagers came to believe that they had no choice but to pray to the god of the earth by burying a person alive as a human pillar. 

 "Please make me the human pillar," said a young girl, and then an old man said, " I'll be the sacrifice in her place. I'm old, so I will not spare my life."

 They met there at the pine-tree grounds, but couldn't decide on who to choose.
