「独裁者」のラストを飾る6分間もの壮絶な演説は、言うまでもなくチャップリンが全世界の人々へ伝えたかったこと。そして母ハンナへのメッセージも…。 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone. 人類はお互いに助け合うべきである他人の幸福を念願として お互いに憎しみあったりしてはならない世界には全人類を養う富がある

The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. 人生は自由で楽しいはずであるのに貧欲が人類を毒し 憎悪をもたらし 悲劇と流血を招いた

We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in, machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. スピードも意思を通じさせず 機械は貧富の差を作り知識をえて人類は懐疑的になった

We think too much and feel too little, more than machinery we need humanity, more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness, without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. 思想だけがあって感情がなく人間性が失われた知識より思いやりが必要である思いやりがないと暴力だけが残る

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say "Do not despair". 航空機とラジオは我々を接近させ人類の良心に呼びかけて 世界をひとつにする力がある私の声は全世界に伝わり 失意の人々にも届いているこれらの人々は罪なくして苦しんでいる人々よ 失望してはならない

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress, the hate of men will pass and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people, and so long as men die, liberty will never perish. 貧欲はやがて姿を消し恐怖もやがて消え去り独裁者は死に絶える大衆は再び権力を取り戻し自由は決して失われぬ！

Soldiers, Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you - who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you as cattle, as cannon fodder. 兵士諸君 犠牲になるな独裁者の奴隷になるな！彼等は諸君を欺き犠牲を強いて家畜の様に追い回している！

Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines. You are not cattle. You are men. You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate, only the unloved hate. Only the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty. 彼等は人間ではない！ 心も頭も機械に等しい！諸君は機械ではない！人間だ！心に愛を抱いてる愛を知らぬ者だけが憎み合うのだ！独裁を排し 自由の為に戦え！

In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written "the kingdom of God is within man" - not one man, nor a group of men - but in all men - in you, the people. "神の王国は人間の中にある" すべての人間の中に！ 諸君の中に！

You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. 諸君は幸福を生み出す力を持っている人生は美しく 自由であり すばらしいものだ！

Then in the name of democracy let's use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. 諸君の力を民主主義の為に集結しよう！よき世界の為に戦おう！青年に希望を与え 老人に保障を与えよう

By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfil their promise, they never will. Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. 独裁者も同じ約束をしただが彼らは約束を守らない！彼らの野心を満し 大衆を奴隷にした！

Now let us fight to fulfil that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness. Soldiers! In the name of democracy, let us all unite! 戦おう 約束を果す為に！世界に自由をもたらし 国境を取除き 貧欲と憎悪を追放しよう！良心の為に戦おう 文化の進歩が全人類を幸福に導くように兵士諸君 民主主義の為に団結しよう！
