soon

In Old English times, soon meant ‘straightaway’, but human nature being what it is, the tendency to procrastinate led over the centuries to a change in meaning to ‘after a short while’. (The same thing happened to anon, and is in the process of happening to directly.) The word itself comes from a prehistoric west Germanic *sœno, whose other descendants apart from soon have all but died out.

古英語期には、soonは「今すぐ」を意味していましたが、人間には先延ばしにする傾向があるので、何世紀もたつうちに、「ちょっとしてから」という意味的変化が生じました。（同じことがanon「やがて」に起き、現在directly「直ちに」に起きているところです）。この語自体は先史西ゲルマン語の*sœnoに由来しますが、この語に由来する言葉はsoon以外すべて廃れました。
