２２．４ 「似てる、似ていない」という意をもつ例
「人が似ていること」を記述する表現として、日本語には「生き写し」、「瓜二つ」がある。一方、英語には「(as) alike as two peas in a pod」、「like two peas in a pod」、「a carbon copy of someone 」、「a chip off the old block」、「a dead ringer」、「one's double」、「the spitting image of someone 」、「the spit and image of someone」、「the very image of someone」などがある。
一方、「（物事が）非常に異なる」ことを記述する表現として、日本語には「雲泥の差」、「月とスッポン」、「天と地ほどの開きがある」などが、英語には「(as) different as chalk and [from] cheese」、「far cry from something」、「like night and day」、「poles apart」などがある。このうち、「(as) different as chalk and [from] cheese」は《英》の用法。日本語の「提灯に釣鐘」は「ぜんぜんつり合わないこと、とても比較にならないこと」のたとえで、ややニュアンスが異なる。
