Whereas Pius XII favored the Modernist Bugnini, John XXIII detested his Modernism and fired him from his position on the commission. Moreover, John XXIII issued in 1962, eight months before the opening of the Vatican II Anti-council, the Apostolic Constitution Veterum Sapientia, which further confirmed the dogmata of the Council of Trent about the exclusive use of the Latin language in perpetuity in the precedential Roman rites, provided excellent arguments for that use, and established a commission to ensure that seminarians read, wrote, and spoke Latin fluently, as well as studied deeply the great works of Classical and Christian Rome for years.
