兜の形の花がかわいい「オクトリカブト」。トリカブトは日本で最強の毒草だろう。みかけによらないものである。「奥鳥兜」の名前はこの種が奥州に多いからだという。

わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道南部に分布しています。山地のブナ林などのやや湿った林床や渓流沿いなどに生え、高さは１～２メートルになります。林縁では斜上し、草原では直立します。葉は５～７裂しますが、細長い裂片には分かれず、丸みがあります。８月から１０月ごろ、濃い青紫色で兜形の花を咲かせます。名前は、陸奥（みちのく）に多いことから。
キンポウゲ科トリカブト属の多年草で、学名は Aconitum japonicum。英名はありません。
"Oku-torikabuto" (Aconitum japonicum) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to southern Hokkaido. This herb grows in wettish forest floors of montane beech forests and along montaine streams, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The stems are scendent at the forest edges and erect at the grasslands. The leaves are divided into 5-7 lobes. They are not divided more fine lobes. The flowers are dark purple and helmet-shaped, and bloom August to October.
