（２１２）お手上げ　　throw up one’s hand

直　　訳　両手を投げ上げる
意　　味　（あまりの恐怖に［あまりに狼狽して／等」）呆然とする、なすすべを知らない

　「throw up one's hands in horror [dismay/etc.]」や「throw one's hands up (in horror [dismay/etc.)」の形でも使う。これらには日本語の「お手上げ」が非常によく対応している。「（あまりの恐怖に［あまりに狼狽して／等」）呆然とする、なすすべを知らないこと］をどちらも「手を上げる」という同じ表現で例えている。
